Don's thread about song titles got me thinking. Not in the direction you'd expect, naturally.

Where did they get the album titles from ?

Movement - a nice counterbalance to one of the meanings of Still, which was around at the same time.

Power, Corruption and Lies - Mark Johnson reported that they'd been looking at using "How does it feel" until it was pointed out that there was a Crass song of the same name at the same time. Any pointers as to why they chose what they chose ?

Low Life - which came first, the idea or the Jeffrey Bernard sample ?

Brotherhood - your guess is as good as mine !

Substance - fairly obvious I'd have thought, drugs

Technique - from the line in Fine Time ?

Republic - a dig at the supposed Factory democracy system they had left behind ?

Get Ready - after all these years, New Order have finally got an album ready.....

Movement - i always thought of this as a movement in their history as they turned the corner from JoyDivision to NewOrder

PC&L - Not got many ideas as to the origin of this, perhaps they just liked the phrase at the time and there arent any deeper connitations?

Low Life - one of their darkest albums in lyrical bitterness content definatly, perhaps it reflected how seriously they took themselves at the time? ;)

Brotherhood - not got a clue!! dont expect Gillian had much of a say in this one

Substance - i always thought of this title as to be indicating the substance of their achievements and the fact that compilation wasnt just a thrown together jumble of tracks but something that had depth and showed the substance of the band.

Technique - Maybe the discovery of technology as evident on this album and the dancey feel it has made this title seem appropriate, its quite a stylish word and i suspect they felt they were on top of their game at this time and their music was just flowing.

Republic - yes dark connitations, pretty much about the factory demise, as is the artwork, burning buildings, a tug of love and so on.

Get Ready - you people had better get ready cause were neworder and we aint fuckin splitting up!!!

Movement - a nice counterbalance to one of the meanings of Still, which was around at the same time.

Brilliant observation, actually.

Power, Corruption and Lies - Mark Johnson reported that they'd been looking at using "How does it feel" until it was pointed out that there was a Crass song of the same name at the same time. Any pointers as to why they chose what they chose ?

If one couples that with "Ultraviolence" (from Burgess' A Clockwork Orange), and "Leave Me Alone", it would be easy to point to a dystopian theme running through that particular album album. Okay, that may be a bit of a stretch. I don't recall anything obvious off the top of my head...may have been another headline that caught their eye.

Low Life - which came first, the idea or the Jeffrey Bernard sample ?

Knowing how sardonic this lot are, probably the sample. No idea if that's the truth or not.

Substance - fairly obvious I'd have thought, drugs

Considering the subject matter of True Faith...another solid observation.

Heh, now explain "?", "International", and "Retro" :-)

The title Republic came from a suggestion by Peter Saville. It refers to an old film company who used to make westerns in the 50s. Its also where Saville nicked the cowboys on Regret from. As for the rest, who knows? Rob Gretton probably used to name the albums, thats why Get Ready took 8 fookin years & the titles awful.

Did a search on the net on this one. The book should be Animal farm instead of 1984 according to this link.

Personally i always thought that PC&L was chosen to confuse people, because it's a rather anarchistic title.

Originally posted by twist PC&L was written on the back of a copy of Orwell's 1984.

As for "Power, Corruption & Lies", I've read somewhere that they were looking for a title that had nothing to do with the album itself. Everybody came up with suggestions of names until they agreed to one of them, suggested by Steve, I guess.

Substance as in 'substantial' - maybe

Is Substance really an album? If Substance is then so is International and Retro and Best of...

Movement - not only was tthis the oppostie of "still"
the name "New Order" which has Nazi connotations, some how plugs into the name "Movement". Don't ask me where I heard this..but the titles "New Order" and "Movement" are somehow linked in historical contexts.

Power, Corruption & Lies.... as said before... something that had nothing to do with album. 2 suggested titles were: "How does it Feel" and "Piss off you Fuckers"
