Interview with Mark E Smith in this month's Jack mag.

Can't remember the exact details but basically he reckons he would've got on a lot better if he'd 'played the game' and performed at what he appears to insinuate were record company only shindigs, and not for the general public. He reckons the Mondays and the Roses, though claiming to be 'rebellious' were the worst for doing this. There's also an off-the-cuff comment that New Order did that too. Not entirely sure Mark's correct there, seeing as they basically were Factory Records for a very long time ... unless of course he thinks all those Hacienda gigs were purely for the benefit of label employees only?!

Think he's called this one wrong, unless anyone knows better?!

Let's not forget how The Fall allegedly got gigs so much easier than Joy Division when they were starting out. Band on the Wall, anyone?

What does Mark E not whine about?

i've never liked the Fall. it's so Trendy to like the Fall. Mark E Smith sounds like he's bought a batch of SOUR GRAPES recently. Could be realizing his lack of REAL TALENT will leave him OLD and BROKE.

It might be trendy in the States, but it certainly ain't over here !!!!!! It's a bit like having Marmite on yer toast, liking The Fall, either you do or you don't. I do, the missus doesn't !!

He`s whined on record for 25 years,so doing it in a mag wont do any harm!

funny how things differ across the waters. newOrder are "alternative" and "underground" here (or they were in the 80's) and as we know too well, permanently linked to the C*RE and D***CHE M*DE and even DE*D OR A**VE. YIKES!!!

I'll take Kurt Ralske over Mark E. Smith anyday if were comparing overbearing front-men.

Have to say though, I think they're great, and they made my favourite album of last year. No lack of talent there. We need people like Smithy to remind us how shit everything is. New Order are so alarmingly cheerful these days...

I'd whine too if my band was pretty crap.

I quite agree there. We need opposites in music these days to keep us sane. I have a lot of respect for The Fall & Mark E Smith's lyrical talent.

Top job Marky! :thumb:

A scan of the Jack article is here: http://www.visi.com/fall/news/pics/04feb\_jack/04feb\_jack.html

The NO reference is on the 5th page (under the lovely photo of Mark with his top teeth hanging out). Just remember Mark likes taking the piss and winding people up for the fun of it. And he's a good drinking buddy of Hooky, so I believe.

Can I also point out that he's in a completely untouchable league as a lyricist... a real weakness of the Order, if you don't mind me saying so.

And in the last 10 years, NO have recorded, what, 15 new songs? The Fall about 100.... at least 20-25% of which are up to or superior to anything on Get Ready.

I like marmite on toast too. :)

Don't quite like the Fall as much as I did in the 70s and 80s, but I'll definitely never sell the stuff from that period. Totally blew away a lot of the skinny tie new wave power pop crap that was around back then.

Since Extricate ?

For me, it is The Unutterable, followed by Cerebral Caustic and the Real New Fall LP.

Just saw a poster advertising a gig at the Carling Academy, Liverpool on the 3rd or 4th March with John Cooper Clarke as support no less.

Isn't it simply possible that they have entitled themselves to feel the wrath of his bombast-ah

I liked all their singles upto the majestic deadbeat descendant. Anything after that I just cannae take.

MES is a miserable fucker - just the way I want to be when I'm older:nod:

Don't take notice of anything he's ever said though:lol:
