Anyone see the documentary on BBC3 last night? Don't do drugs kids, you'll end up like that!! To be fair though, he did seem to be doing his best to stay clean.

Key points:

The managers of Black Grape sued him after he had sacked them, and won. Ryder then brought another case saying the contract was void as he was under the influence when he signed it. He lost.

As a result, every penny he's earned since 1998 gets taken off him to pay for the lawsuit.

Another case is pending, trying to get the financial constraints upon him relaxed, however his solicitor wasn't hopeful. The solicitor suggested that Ryder might consider filing for bankruptcy, but that would mean he loses all his copyright, and the subsequent royalty payments which are his only steady income.

They also mentioned a row between two record labels (didn't say which), that has prevented him from recording for the last six years.

He was treated quite sympathetically by the director. Is there more, or was it a one-off?

I saw the Shaun Ryder documentary on BBC 3.

What a mess he is, I feel sorry for his kids, fancy having a father like that.

What puzzles me , is why make a program about a drug addict like that anyway?

I actually expected him to be a lot worse off than that. He seems to be not entierly fucked up (has a house, near bez, partner, kids, mother), its not like "we find shaun in rehab with 3 weeks left."

he still seems to be an addict (24 rennees is a lot of heartburn!!, not to mention vodka smoothies). The director was fair though, you could really see the sensative side to him , would have been easy to play the "party animal" line.

Saw the mondays in 99 in Ireland,a terrible terrible gig, i think shaun hit rowetta on the boat over, and she left with bez, they got some guy in a bez mask to dance onstage instead, real letdown.

Funniest parts:

"Shaun and bez have known each other for as long as they can remember"

bez giving out cause the car they hired for him was mearly an s-class mercedes (one of the big big mothers, like the one princess dianna died in)

the trip around the hacienda site

shaun reminicing about the times hed be on a "god given mission to the hacienda", which involved pickpocketing to get the entrance fee (and drug money).

For all his past misdemeanours and supposed lack of cash he's got a lovely life now though, hasn't he? Dividing his time between a village in the Peak District and beaches in Perth. I can't remember them making the point last night but the village he lives in is the one which doubles as Royston Vasey in the Leage of Gentlemen.

His tattoo was funny - wouldn't let the camera see the spelling but pronounced it would say 'ex-stacey'.

Another documentary which insisted on putting a 'the' before 'Happy Mondays' as well.

He looked a whole lot healthier than he did in the 24HPP documentaries. The lyrics don't seem to make any more sense though.

When he came out on stage at the end of the inspirals gig at the Apollo he looked really F*C*E*. He just stood there, 'sang' 24 hour party people, and thsi is how it feels and barely moved.

He was clearly out of it.

And by the way, isnt this :topic:? :)

Not really, they mentioned supporting New Order at the Hac when they were trying to work out Bez's first gig.

And surely the only TV show on any British channel to mention New Order last night, no?! :eek3:

For a lad with no cash the boy Ryder don't half wear a lot of Lacoste and Henri Lloyd, don't he?!

If he is to be believed, then he borrows money off family and friends!!

He still admits to taking a line "occasionally" to calm his nerves (really Shaun, we'd hadn't guessed) but shouldn't be thought of as an addict. Covering your hand with lighter fluid and setting fire to it is pretty stupid though, regardless of your level of intoxication...

I agree with Old Blue in every way, including the fact that he wants a Stadium at Falmer:clap:

He could make a fortune going round to various schools to lecture kids on the dangers of Drugs. Personally, i've never understood Tony Wilson's claim that Ryder was a great poet. More like an uneducated thug who got lucky if you ask me. Makes Sumner look like Beaudalaire.

Shaun Ryder lost it the moment he and his band blew that advance on the ill-fated "Yes! Please" recording sessions in Barbados...and to be honest with you, I don't think he ever got it back - yes, even accounting for Black Grape. The guy has long been artistically redundant and I don't understand why so many still think he's some sort of genius.

No doubt he was always a twat, in a genious way though if u ask me ;) . As for his lyrics, they're basically the lyrics of an addict, with a strange and teribly insensitive sense of humor, but still in a genious way... I mean u can find geniouses in every aspect of human activity, with no seperation between "good" or "bad". I' ve known personally a couple of geniouses in my life, one was the biggest hooligan in my hometown, another one was a small gang's leader. Im not saying than anyone of them is a rolemodel (one actually ended really bad), im simply saying that geniousness is a very rare characteristic in human kind, so i cant help admiring it, when i think i see one, no matter if a agree or not with the kind of activity its involved. So that makes me a fan of Shawn Ryder i guess (even if i wouldnt dare compare him with Yeats ;) ). Besides i always liked his bands' music anyway. Just hope he gets better :)
