Everyone is always saying 'the best this' and 'the best that', but what is the worst track by each incarnation of new order?

Joy Division's worst has got to be Failures or At A Later Date

New Order ? Well, personally I find We All Stand virtually unlistenable.

I think the most song New Order have made is Brutal.

For New Order, I would have to say "Turn the Heater On."

I think the five-track digipak remix version of "Ruined In A Day" is BY FAR the stinkiest travesty to come out under New Order's name. EACH track was almost identical - intro, rhythm, ending, not to mention the same length. SLY and ROBBIE were the miscreants responsible for this turd. They must have been taking the piss. Bigtime. Shame on them! "Ruined In A Lunchtime" More like. Needless to say, said digpak went back to the flog-shop without delay. The bad smell of that one still lingers to this day. Talk about totally inapproriate remixes.....

what........I love the punk rock feel of JD's Glass. My least fav JD track has got to be The Eternal,and I can't stand NO's Confusion.

Okay then: New Order: SHAME of The Nation. Utter Cack! Runner up: all the remixes of 1963 (except the Arthur Baker one) and everything previously unreleased on (The Rest Of), naturally. Electronic: Can't really nominate one cos I ain't got all their singles and albums. But they have turned out some tosh as well. Revenge: ditto above Other Two: A good third of their first LP was pretty piss poor. Monaco: That housey one off their second self-titled LP. Buggered if I remember the title. Sweet Lips, also, cos it sounds like a Take That song ferchrissakes.

I'm slagging both off. The original has terrible singing, the remix has an awful bassline.

The bassline is actually intentionally like that - sequenced OFF-BEAT - in a vain (and pretty futile, it has to be said) attempt to give the beat a "funkier" kick. Whatever the fuggin hell that means. But yeah - I agree, that remix is SO gratuitous. (espesh that totally pointless stuttering section halfway thru the 12" vinyl version - no wonder the version on Substance 1987 is massively edited down) And it heralded the first appearance on a NO record of those dreaded cliched backing singers.

Shellshock--the worst song they ever made? Are you serious? I'm sort of partial to the song myself. It was the first New Order track I ever heard, and it turned me on to the band.

For JD, Glass I think is pretty mediocre.. and why? Steve's rhythm! It's one of the more boring. (But then I haven't heard it live..) I think Steve has this unannounced power over the quality of the song, but then I'm totally biased...

For New Order, all those godawful remixes. I can never get it out of my head that "I'm not listening to a new song, I'm just listening to a remix of a song I've already heard." Maybe I'm simple-minded.

Truly, Novelty is a good song, and definitely good live. I think it's one of the more extroverted songs they did... In a way, it's just as good as These Days..

Shellshock, Subculture etc?? Come on, most of the drivel on Movement is far worse than those two. Mind you, Slow Jam comes pretty damn close.

Nah, they are all good in their own limited way, even Doubts Even Here (doubts even here when I wrote that though :)). They were better live than on record, let's just say that....

If you have Heart and Soul box set, there's a live cut of Novelty from 1979-80 (?), which Ian introduces as "a very old song, some of you might remember". I just think it kind of captures the problems of punk in a nutshell in the lyrics.

BTW, what's wrong with SOM? It's one of my favorites, especially off the Peel sessions.

Oh my god, don't kill me, but... I never liked Transmission... As for New Order, there are only two songs I refuse to listen to: Every Little Counts and Run Wild. Shellshock isn't that bad. And Subculture rules. :P

I just love the differences of opinions on this thread. Personally, I love Sound of Music by JD and Sub-culture by NO.

Since I've been listening to Republic a lot over the last couple of weeks, the one song that has not improved one iota IMO is Liar. The backing vox just turn what is a mediocre song into an irritant every time it has graced my turntable lately.

I've also played one disc of Heart and Soul a day lately as well, and going by the stuff on that, my vote for JD would be From safety to where...?. That song just sounds a bit incomplete to me, and doesn't possess any remarkable characteristic.

Worst New Order - Slow Jam

I just listened to my shellshock 12" today. in the company of "we built this city..." it sounds as grand as Stairway to heaven.

Slow Jam the worst? Have you heard the second side of Republic? Worst song of all time (outside NO) is, and will always be either "Witchy Woman" by the Eagles or "Oh what a night" by Franki Valli. Worse than just bad - these songs are from the pen of The Dark Lord Himself CTD

i actually like the second half of Republic. i suppose that makes me as rare as an honest politician. i think liar is great. the line "were you abandoned in your youth..." is hysterical. it's written with the same tone as shoot you down from the stone roses. i'm a sucker for harsh words sung with a sweet voice.

The Other Two - the tracks with Melanie Williams on vocals

I think it's just an example of rock stars of the past (I'm thinking of Grace Slick) trying to jump the latest bandwagons in musical trends. Anyone wanting a good laugh should pick up the Jefferson Airplane BTM right about when they make the leap to Jefferson Starship. Fantastic stuff, those guys....

Mmmm...the album version and record mirror mix of Sub-culture are excellent though I don't care for the 12".

Even We All Stand, the 12" of Sub-culture and Every Little Counts are better than the terrible remixes for 60MPH and as someone said the Sly and Robbie 'reggae' mixes of Ruined - what was that all about?

I hate to do this, but the worst New Order track ever recorded has to be Rock The Shack. This song never should have seen the light of day.

If it weren't for Slow Jam, I would have to back you up Tracey. Unfortunately, the 2 worst tracks are located on the same disc. I can overlook "youthful indescretions" but to miss the mark by so much this late in the game...we may be lucky if the next album has a 50/50 good/bad ratio...we'll be lucky if there is a next album.

they need to toss in a couple instrumentals to ease the burden Bernard's rhyming dictionary must be feeling
