New Factory boxset...possibly?

Just seen this message from Marc on the Fac list:

"A planned box set of Factory output is due in Oct/Nov However, it is not 100% approved. If all goes well, it will be a 4 cd set with bonus DVD. A limited version is planned with special packaging. The same label which brought you the JD and NO box set have commissioned it (WEA/London)...but it is still very much in its infancy.

However, nothing is approved yet. I'm lending assistance on it and will make changes where possible to make it worthwhile to the FAC collector as well as novice. Sadly, the budget is of concern and it could very well become a "greatest hits" with normal tracks like Blue Monday, Love will tear us apart, wrote for luck....etc. to ensure larger sales.

Details will follow when there is more to discuss. Keep your fingers crossed the project stays alive..."

It is gonna BLOOOOOOW no matter what. I might just have a funeral for the box set before it comes out, that way when I hear of it, I will think... "Poor little Factory box set, is it pitty it had to die before it had a chance to live". Let's face it friends, we will never see the box set New Order should have given us. The only way that is going to happen is if the rabid fans of this site make it themselves. Honestly, London Records doesn't give a rip about the 5% of the New Order fan base that we represent. Is a pitty, but is true. The Golden age of the Order is over, and so we must band together to relive those moments ourselves. Some of the people on this site are amazing at helping you put your hands on that special New Order item... like when Rocket Mick helped me complete my New Order 12" compilation, or when I made my own New Order instrumental CD. We must look within ourselves for what cannot and will not ever be found in the record stores.

Ripping the fans off yet again.

What should they have given us and why?

What they should have done was produce a box set with four discs, with track selection provided by acquaintances of theirs, some remixes and a few live tracks bunged in for good measure. That would have kept everyone happy and everyone unhappy as well, everybody knows best as to which tracks should and shouldn't be included. By not putting everything that we've already all bought on there, it opens up the opportunity for people to moan, a worldwide hobby.

What they shouldn't have done was churn out a load of half-finished demos and odds and sods (not least because there aren't enough to fill a matchbox, let alone a CD box), or some warts-and-all desperately bad gigs from whenever.

Sorry I'm new here! (But not *new* - I'm an old JD follower from back *then*) Anyway - I assume there's been a lot of debate on Retro and I'm sure that raising the subject again has caused a collective groan from the NOOL massive. B-but.... I think Retro is fine for what it is, For me it mirrors NO nicely - mostly utterly fantastic, some magnificent mistakes, some (unintentional)fun, some ill-judged remixes and some unforgettable live moments. The book is good too. The selection's not what I would have picked - I would have liked a few more rare tracks, some of the unissued Peel sessions etc, but hell, most hardcore fans have got all this stuff anyway in some form. So I'm just interested to know what sort of box people here would want. If this topic has been done to death, please feel free to tell me to f- off. I won't mind!

It's very typical of New Order, maybe too typical. Nonconformist but conforming, random but ordered, precise and haphazard at the same time. Could we really expect anything else but a mixed bag ? Every record has been a mixed bag, every gig. They have always promised to deliver and got lost in transit, and it is no little irony that their biggest commercial success was in conjunction with the nation's other biggest perennial underachievers, the national football team !!!

If Barney loves SAGT I wonder if it will appear in a future live set. I doubt it.

strange that its titled a "factory" box set. sounds well dodgy to me! we want some new material or some "proper" remixes of the old stuff! i personally think all the remixes ever done by other folks are shite........... apart from oakenfold & osbournes true faith 94,am i right,or am i right?!

Look, it's obviously not going to be a New Order compilation anyway, so why the NO wishlist?

A decent Factory compilation would be great. LTM do a great job, but they don't have the rights to all the stuff - I keep emailing James Nice in hope!

For instance, we need CD release for the Durutti and John Dowie tracks from A Factory Sample - James Nice hasn't got the rights to those. The original 12" versions of "English Black Boys/See Them A-Come" by X-O-Dus (Palatine only included an edit of the a-side) would be great too.

And the Factory single versions of "Watching The Hydroplanes/Morbid Fear" (not on the LTM Tunnelvision compilation). The whole of James' Factory output apart from "Hymn From A Village" is unavailable on CD (and only "Folklore" ever came out on CD at all).

There's loads of stuff that they could include on a rarities disc. Plus a great live disc of stuff by ACR, Stockholm Monsters, the pick of the Mondays, etc, etc.

That Bjork package looks like a good effort, fanwise. I'm sure we'll get the NO one someday.

I (sort-of) agree with Death Of Art. The most interesting potential box-set would hoover up all the odds and ends of FAC and FBN stuff that isn't available elsewhere on CD. On the other hand most of us have got these trax in some form or other anyway, and if not, well....I kind of like the fact that some stuff is hard to get hold of. Keeps things interesting. And...I can just about live without the single version of Watching The Hydroplanes!
