Bill Oddie vs. New Order

Got a frantic 'phone call from a friend on Saturday telling me to turn on BBC2 'cos Bill Oddie was waving a copy of "Substance" at the camera on an antiques show. I turned on the box but, alas, it was too late - did anyone else catch this surreal moment early Saturday afternoon, and since when was "Substance" an antique? And how old does that make us lot????

Do you mean that some old lovely couple stood on a queue to have "this old record we found amongst the things from poor dear uncle Darby" appraised?

I turned over and love will tear us apart vid was playing, interesting i thought, then bill oddie appears, then he starts talking about factory records, clip of new order doing blue monday on totp, lots of clips and chat about the hacienda, anarchy and bankruptcy.

verrry strange for bbc2(?) on a sat afternoon!

Antique fairs for me from now on then

"Yes, well, I can tell you that this was a record put out by 'New Order', back in the far-off year of 1987. Back then there were demands for recorded music on vinyl records - perish the thought of any such madness these days! - and this was put together by a group known as a 'record company' called 'Factory Records' and run by 'a twat' in order to satisfy the fans of this particular group.

"Now, this design is very sparse, restrained, and overall not as gaudy as more expensive relics from the era generally are. That brings the price that this would get on the market down considerably. Also, if you notice, there's a slight hole in the middle of this record, which really means whoever had this before didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. You never want to damage the merchandise by poking such 'holes'.

" Looking at the 'record' itself, you can see these weird 'grooves', onto which you'd place the 'spindle' of the 'record player' onto it, and this has obviously been played once or twice. With all the previous problems listed, this still would've netted at least $5.00 American dollars without being opened and actually listened to. Coincidentially, any records you see by a soul duo called 'Hall and Oates' are usually the highest-priced items of this variety because of their lack of use over the years.

"I suppose you'd like to sell this, but I will do you a favor. Let's see what I have in my wallet...hmm, an old gum wrapper and a dollar bill. That seems about right for this item, I'll go and put it away in a safe place. Perhaps in fifty years it will be worth two gum wrappers, but I doubt it."
