Cries and Whispers from Substance is such a great song. I never hear anyone say too much about it, but I can't stop listening to it. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever constructed. The lyrics are so great.

Anyone agree?

I do. There were a lot of great recordings between the first two albums. Mesh / Cries & Whispers/ EGG / Hurt / Procession and Temptation.

They're all on my favourite CD I burned for my car.:thumb:

Yeah, of course, as Steve Morris explained on Retro, there was a mistitle on Substance and Mesh is actually Cries And Whispers. Great song, anyway. But I really, really adore the TRUE Mesh, one of my favourite songs ever.

I like the "true" Mesh just fine, but I love Cries and Whispers. By the way, did it get its name from the Bergman film?

I like that Factus8 thing. Its far superior to Movement.

I believe so... just like "In A Lonely Place", "Thieves Like Us", "Vanishing Point"... all movie titles.

FACTUS8 is perhaps my fave NO release.

So are you talking about the slow song that starts out with Hooky and meanders on about signing a contract in a field of snow or the one that begins with electronic noises and sort of reminds me of homage?? I think the former is the weaker of the two.

both great songs, in fact that early stuff including movement is probably the stuff i listen to most.

mesh from substance (really cries and whispers), just lovely and lush. lovely lyrics, beautifully sung.

mesh from factus 8 (really mesh), immense, angular, sharp, enigmatic. And when that ghostly synth kicks in....wow. This is truely their lost great song.

*The field of snow one is the true Mesh and is one of their best ever... I like how Mr Ben feels exactly the same of me when I hear it. :thumb:

Totally agree. The Atlanta 688 version from 06/1983 is worth a listen too.

the atlanta one sounds like it was done with a drum machine, quite a unique interpretation unlike all previous live versions. Notice too that originally (80/81) it was sung by hooky (and steve on the choruses) and with completely different lyrics.

Anyone got the atlanta version & homage for comparison? I've done a search on eMule and drawn a blank.

i love those old analogue synths. was listening the S25's The Process/Looking from a Hilltop live earlier on. yummy synth sounds.

Homage is in the media section of this site (in horrible Realplayer format!) but don't expect to be able to hear any lyrics the recording is crap!

BTW I converted that Realplayer file to MP3 for my own use.
