Just bumped into this small quote from the official PSB website. Thought it might be of interest:

2003 - February On February 22 the Pet Shop Boys DJ in London at Arthur Baker's Return To New York, at an event billed as a soundclash between them and New Order (represented by Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook). To New Order's amusement, Neil and Chris don't physically play the records themselves - they choose and sequence them, and their programmer Pete Gleadall operates the decks - but they feel fully validated in this approach when Arthur Baker tells them that this was exactly how Afrika Bambaataa used to do it.

So...did Barney and Hooky spin the discs themselves? I would think...not... Or am I missing the reason for their amusement? :scratch:

And what is it with DJing ? anyone can put a record on a turntable. My grandfather used to play records in his house 40 years ago

Footnote to this - since this meeting of minds in 2003, New Order members have been doing exactly the same thing, choosing the records for someone else to put on.

Barney did his own dj'ing that night, but his beat-matching was awful. Would've been better just stopping one record, then starting the next instead of trying to get 'clever'.

Hooky actually just made airplane impressions whilst Alex James did his set for him, cos he had a bad hand.

being able to beatmatch and make transitions is the key to successful djing. otherwise, you are just a human jukebox/cd changer.

barney should really pick up this skill, really. it would be nice to see him do low-key club nights like ben watts does.
