Slow jam.

I know most people don't like it, I was never a big fan either, but today I heard it in the car and come to think of it, it's great rock track, and the lyrics are very Lou Reed. I guess Barney was right after all, you just need to give them songs some time and they'll grow on you.

I'm listening to it now and can see why people done like it. I was a fan intially, although not a big fan, now i dont like it, its just that i cant be bothered forwarding it.

It's unlistenable. The lyrics are just embarrassing!

And that my Major friend is precisely why I dig it so much! It is a good rock track with it's lyrical roots in gibberish...a la Slow Jam.

Meaning=Nothing.

But since when did that really have a bearing on the world as we know it?

Lads, how can you say such a thing? Isn't it an interesting observation, to say the least, on how Barney's life has gone from shite to alright, now that he owns a yatch and can afford to go to sea, get pissed there, and he just feels good about himself in general, as opposed to something like 'Round and round' or Morrissey?

i just keep thinking about that "...beer" line. oh by the way chunks, me and some guys from the sandiegoindie.com board are arranging a brewery "field trip" we're either going to check out the stone brewery or ballast point brewery in a few weeks. interested?

i feel the same way about every little counts as it seems some here feel about slow jam. it's "suck factor" is what makes it good.

I just can't understand how mofos don't dig the tunes like that!! Thems the tunes that make NO (& JD to an extent) really stand out from the rest of the music industry as a whole...to much slick producing is the downfall of society!!

You could actaully argue, that at it's roots, NO is the LAST of the punk bands. I mean, there hasn't been a very good one in a LOOOOOONG time. Not since J.F.A., 7 Seconds, [Old]Agent Orange or Black Flag.

Don't you dare mention that shite that passes as punk these days!!! That is tantamount to Glam/Hair Spray Rock.

Remember, Punk is an attitude...not the sound. We surely cannot knock NO for (To quote our favorite, Neil Tennant in NewOrderStory) retaining true to the original ideals from time to time.

I have always been a huge fan of Slow Jam. I think it is one of the greatest tracks by New Order. I make no apologies.

Am a fan too, it's not a great song, but it is a solid one. I like the chorus, and I actually like the simplistic lyrics, which at least make some logical sense for the most part (as opposed to some the inane cr@p on Republic), the sentiments expressed here work for me. Whenever I listen to it, i feel a bit good about things, other than the slow grinding opening which I find a bit laborious.

Its got its good parts & its bad parts. its a bit too long,but hey we cant moan we get no new stuff then complain we dont like it when we do! On the whole Get Ready is a good album,better than most things that were around at the same time.

Get Ready is a great album! Just ruined by Rock the Shack.

Good observation on it being Barney's musical autobiography. Pity it had to be set to such a shite godawful track really. The lyrics and the music just don't sit together comfortably - it could have been an acceptable instrumental, but it's rather sad to think that a band capable of so many fabulous tracks have run out of ideas so drastically on this one, yet still rated it more highly than Player in the League or the rather spiffing Sabotage !

Not overly fond of SJ. Should never had been on Retro!

I've heard it a lot, I just don't like it regardless of who's it is.

There is a massive, loathing for Rock the Shack that I don't really get. It's a song they seem to just be having fun too, having a goof, and enjoying themselves. The only things I tend to hate are what I regard as dull tracks (things like Liar and Chemical and We all Stand and Fine Time) or melodic monstrosities and experiments gone wrong (Movement). Rock the Shack just sounds like a bit of a goof, in the tradition of Louie Louie and Barbara Ann. Not a great song, not a horrible song, just a song they had a laugh doing. Don't hate it, don't like it a lot, it's fine to me.

And I actually more or less like Slow Jam musically, the music seems to mimic the idea of a struggle, that life's a struggle, and that you come to terms with it, and learn how to enjoy yourself and in the melody you can feel the grinding of it, and then the almost musical sense of a free'd self as it gets to the verses and particularly the choruses. That could be all a bunch of b.s., but that's my feeling.

Come on, SJ is a bad song compared to the stuff they made in the past; it sounds so uninspired. To me its a filler for Get Ready. RTS sounds like they we're drunk when recording it.

I dont mind them recording crap, but WTF they had to put it on Get Ready and stain their collection of impressive songs.

A better choice would have been to put Brutal and Behind closed doors on GR. It's all about taste again i guess

RTS has grown on me, but all through the 2001-2002 shows it was definitely the "chance-to-grab-a-beer/take-a-piss" moment. Hence Barney's tongue-in-cheek poll at Finsbury....

Lyrics dont always have to have a deep/hidden/prophetic underlying meaning, many great songs down the years have been nothing more than an infectious melody with shallow yet catchy lyrics.

If a song sounds good then it generally is good regardles of what words are used.

So dont know SlowJam so much on solely its lyrical content!
