As I am attending the ACR gig Saturday any bets on any of NO or associated being there?
Please consider this was the group (albeit Ian's words) that called them "fucking shit"!

Name that tune?
Slippy, could you post a set list for the ACR gig? It would be interesting to know if its different from what they've been playing over the last 18 months or so given the special occasion.
Would've gone me sen but I'm up in Glasgee for the weekend.![]()

Maybe I will remember the setlist depends on how 'with it' I am :p
Glasgow is no excuse for missing an ACR gig! ![]()

It's gotta be the same set, wouldn't you think? Berluddy good set though.
Shame we've got Oldham at home, instead of away.

Which set you on about?
They've done roughly the same set since their 'comeback' this time 2 years ago. About half a dozen gigs (London, Mancland, Blackburn) with a couple of cancellations (London, Hull).
Last time out was Fabric last October/November but they were only given an hour there so it was a truncated version of the set they'd been doing all along.
... and just to make me more excited my copies of the 'To Each ...' CD and Vinyl re-releases have turned up today! ![]()
BTW the 'bonus' 12" of Abracadubra/Sommadub actually has labels like the original Sir Horatio 12" with them being called Sir Horatio - good on ya Soul Jazz Records!
Try and nab a setlist if you can Slippy, then scan it and stick it up here! ![]()
Dead easy at an ACR gig - you'll probably be the only one clambering around looking for it.
Don't nick Denise Johnson's tambourine though. ![]()
Can't believe a NOOL'er attempted that. And, nope, it wasnae me!

I don't think I will nick her percussion - no ![]()
I will endeavour to get that setlist though!

Denise Johnson's with ACR now? I wondered where she'd gone!
So who is going then? I'm gonna jet down. i get back from uni at about 6 ish, so can make it.
Do they still play flight? I only have the early collection that was released a couple of years back.
Well I would jet down. But i cant seem to book tickets! ![]()
Apparently there is a problem with my switch card, and i cant get through on the phones. Disgraceful ![]()

They were doing Flight at all their initial gigs - we talked about 'em HERE. I had scanned the setlist in as you can see (er, or rather can't see) but I no longer use that domain so it's not available anymore.
However, their most recent gig is talked about HERE where Flight didn't appear, but then it was a cut-down set from the norm anyways.

Was Denise not impressed by this nabbing?
Want to get hold of those bongos on the Tribeca video?

Denise Johnson!

Same line-up these last 15'ish years.
Kerr, Moscrop, Quigley, Johnson & Johnson.
And some anonymous bloke on keyboards.

Nostalgia time - look at the back of the All Night Party 7"
Jeremy Kerr (Jeremy
)
Martin Moscrop
Simon Topping (whatever happened to...)
Peter Terrell
I feel better now (carefully putting rare record away :p )
Not sure what happened to Simon Topping (didn't realise he was also in T-Coy with Mike Pickering...?)
But I do know (although this is a very obscure fact!) that Andrew Connell (occasional ACR keyboardist) played on the "Jane And Barton" album on Cherry Red (of "It's A Fine Day" fame)! :)
Oh, and of course, Donald Johnson used to drum with Electronic.
l8rs,
Nick ;)

it doesn't matter what ian thought of them. what DOES matter is that you and others like them.
Terrell and Connell went on to form Swing Out Sister did'nt they? Shame that such pioneers should now find themselves on a list of wanted for musical crimes against humanity...

I knew Connell was in Swing Out Sister, didn't know Terrell was. Who cares - Corinne Drewery was the only thing looking at there! Phwoar! Actually, aren't they still going? I'm sure I read a couple of years back that they're 'big in Japan' and are constantly gigging over there.
I think there's a thread somewhere here about Topping. Marty Gray knew what happened to him. He moved to Noo Yoik to study percussion, then played in a couple of other bands back here, and now advertises himself as a piano tuner. Or something.
Check the FAQ for the scoop on their Japanese popularity!
Seems it's just Drewery and Connell now. There were three of 'em in the 80's, sure it was Terrell but could be wrong.
Andy Connel, Corrine Drewery formed S out Sister with Martin Jackson ex of Magazine , ex minder/tour guide for one day to Madonna before her appearance at the Hacienda tube night. Andy is one of the many people who augments the Durrutti Column line-up on a casual basis for live work, think he may have appeared on recorded stuff too . He also helped out Rob Gray/Little big band on his Factory release alongside Vini , Robs former wife Ellie was one of the managers at the Hacienda ,the Little big Band played one of the Zumbar nights at the Hacienda with a line-up that included Martin Jackson, Vini Reilly and Rob himself, Martin Moscrop arrived too late as did Johnny Marr. The whole thing was filmed on 16mm I think, by dani Jacobs who now does The Corrs videos, and is notable for the fact that Vini proved to be a bloody good blues guitarist. Anyway, just thought I'd pass that on
Never knew he was from A Certain Ratio. I vaguely remember an article describing him as an ex-roadie for Joy Division.
From an article on their website:
"Andy writes all the music, and I write the lyrics. Andy is a Manchester native, and that can send you one of two ways," says the Nottingham-born singer. "You can go down the Joy Division/New Order road, the very dour, industrial route, or you can defy that and look for a route out of the industrial north. I think our music is escapist."

I have that Swing Out Sister album 'It's Better to Travel' from 1986 on vinyl - what was I thinking? ![]()
As you were about 14 at the time in 1986, thinking adolescent thoughts like as not. Though in Corinne's case , not strictly the exclusive domain of 14 year olds, ahem. Anyway as a pop song I think breakout as weathered pretty well, the video however is another matter

The video is rubbish I agree! ![]()
the video is another matter, it has'nt merely weathered well, it's a work of art, capturing the exuberance of youth and the glory of a Northern textile warehouse in a myriad of cotton weave and colour, to think anyone would think I meant otherwise shocks and saddens me, one of the perils of t'internet I suppose .

i certainly hope so! the first time i saw acr (in 91 i think) i stood next to shaun ryder and his dad (complete with pointy finger dancing) all night. the next time (92 i think) johnny marr, steve, gillian and hooky were there. i was wearing a one true passion t-shirt and hooky shook my hand saying 'what a man!!'. the last time was a cupla years ago and jimmi goodwin was there so the omens are good. i'm just hoping i dont get too fucked and embarrass myself...
Good to wake up this morning and hear Shack Up from 11.50 last night and Won't Stop Loving You from 12.15 this morning blasted out live down me mobile phone!
Cheers Hibster! ![]()
(What were you trying to tell me with that 2nd song though?

Indeed, as Al says, Simon Topping is a Piano Tuner.....in Nottingham. Praps, Paul Trowell or Mike Garrity could mystery shop him.
Afraid I'm another owner of the '86 SoS Album, from memory I played it quite a lot at the time.
Thanks for further background Garymac, always interested in stuff like that.
A good night had by all. I thought that Flight was the best song, that or the version of heart and soul. Pity i couldnt drink, although being sober probably kept me at the front to get photos :)

Sounds like a good night. Anyone hear if they are doing any other gigs?
Though I wish they'd drop Turn Me On from the set. It would be good to hear Knife Slits Water again instead.
I dont think there are any other gigs planned. They dont gig very often.
keep an eye on www.acrmcr.com but dont hold your breath.

Never been that fond of SLSD!!!
sounded like a top night.
over the past few years they have been quite new orderesque in their set rigidity but this was top drawer. as for the heart and soul cover...you lucky people!
nothing back from urbanite or soul jazz regarding gigs..nobody hear anything on the night??
Seem to have missed you Shell! ACR were rocking. Seems like someone on Cerysmatic beat me to the playlist. But tracks played were:
Heart and Soul Si Fermir O Grido
I read on Faclist that Ray Winstone was in the audience!
That would've been worth the entrance fee alone!
"Where's your tool?!" ![]()
Small point of order, but isn't Won't Stop Loving You actually called The Big E?
Yours sincerely
A. Pedant
Anyway, I've got a recording of them live in Belgium last year if anyone wants a copy.

You think I don't know that! The handwritten playlist has it as WSLY :p
I will take you up on that recording though please! ![]()

Not quite, it was called the Big E but that was a wishy-washy sub-Level 42 type thing, wasn't it? They re-released it a year later with Fat Boy Slim and Barney at the controls and made it the (much improved) monster we know today. And they renamed it.

What's the setlist for Belgium, OB? I didn't know they'd played there to be honest. Not really after a copy, they all meld into one after a while, but interested to know what they played..

Pretty much the backbone of their regular set then? Good stuff though - wonder what sort of audience they got on the continent?
