I have a question relating to the discography, albeit a very anal one:

I finally tracked down the UK 'Perfect Kiss' 7Inch with the really short (and crappy) 3:51/3:01 edits on (the ones credited to 'Ivan Ivan', whoever that may be). This seven inch has the catalogue number FAC 123.

I also have a UK 7 inch with a catalogue number FAC 123-7 which has the 4:48/5:09 edits on. I notice your discography has the running times and label scans for these two releases the wrong way around.

The thing is, which of these two UK seven inch versions was the 'offical' UK seven inch. I'm guessing one was a promo for radio use, and the other was commercially released - but which one? I'm guessing, as the 4:48 version was on 'The Best Of' and 'Low-life' that this must have been the official seven inch mix - in which case, what was the purpose of an even shorter edit being made?

Erhm, wasn't this discussed a couple of months back? Anyway, what's listed in the Discography as FAC 123-7 is the promo. And the promo, AFAIK, is the one with the big "123" on the labels, just like it shows. But now when you mention it, I'm not 100% sure. And there's no way for me to check the facts until June...

Are you saying that you have the 4:48/5:09 edits on the "123" issue?

BTW: radio promos usually have versions less that 4 mintes - it makes them more likely to be played on the air.

Well, this is what I have in my collection:

Both these seven inches have FAC 123 printed on the label, but the one that has FAC 123-7 scratched into the run-out groove has the 4:48/5:09 edits on - the one with 123 on the front and back in big letters, as below:

The other seven inch, with those horribly brutal three minute edits, just has FAC 123 on the run-out, and the plainer of the labels (with a credit to 'Ivan Ivan' for the horrible editing - that's this one here:

You have the correct images and cat. numbers at the website, but have the track listings round the wrong way in the text content.

As I said, I'm guessing the FAC 123 with the shorter mixes is the promo, but neither of them actually say they're promos (you normally get that 'not for resale' disclaimer). As far as I can tell, they seem to both be pretty kosher seven inch releases.

Confusing as ever!

Hmm. Ok, I may have swapped the scans for the promo and the non-promo. I'll double-check that when I get back to my collection in June. Thanks for the heads up.

I may be wrong, but the TLU promo 7" (for example) doesn't say anything about promo either. There's no rule that says that promos have to have 'not for sale' etc. written on them...

True. To be honest, I'm not sure which seven inch versions were actually released in the stores, and which ones were merely radio promos. I have seven inches of every Factory New Order single apart from Blue Monday, but I know certain ones (such as Run 2) were radio promos, but was the 'Thieves Like Us' seven inch a promo only?

Never simple with the New Order discography, is it?!

MR D/TLV...i will check these out because i have them all.As far as i know THIEVES LIKE US is only a PROMO and a few of the early PROMOS DO NOT have NOT FOR RE-SALE marked on them. Many of the PROMOS i got had an additional sticker telling me what they are .This was written on from MARK at THE RECORD PEDDLAR and therefore if he said it was a PROMO i believed him.As you both say this can get very confusing. Also as i only collected the 12 inch versions at the start the 7 inch ones i purchased much later so cannot be sure which is which.I will be delving into the vaults of PLANET ROCKET soon and hope to shed some light on this.I do think that the SHORT version is indeed the PROMO.Lousy cover aswell! REGARDS ROCKET MICK

By the way, Mr TLV, I managed to get hold of a copy of the 'Confusion 02' promo WACKT002A/B - I notice your discography doesn't have timings for it. The track list is as follows:

  1. Confusion (Koma & Bones Vocal) 8:11 - same as version on WACKT002 officially released 12" [note: this mix has Bernard's original vocal, as it does on WACKT002 - not the re-recorded vocals as stated in your discography - out of the Koma And Bones mixes, only the edited version on the CD single has the re-recorded vocals]

  2. Confusion (Koma And Bones Dub) 7:56

  3. Confusion (Acapella) 1:47 - Bernard's original vocal

Hope that helps you maintain your lists!

Ok. I don't have WACKT002A/B myself (care to trade?) so I have to rely on 2nd hand information for the details. I'll update as needed.

Re WACKT002: Probably a typo from my part. Unless anyone objects I'll update in the next revision...
