New Order In Session CD

i received an e-mail today from the import retailer from whom i ordered my "In Session" CD stating that it has been shipped to me.

i thought the release date wasn't until 12.4.04...

does anyone have it yet?

The release date is for customers,retailers get releases in advance,say delivered on Saturday so they can have it on sale monday morning. I`ve ordered a few things on-line and they arrive day of release,so if you get post on bank holidays you should get it-if no post tuesday (by which time everyone will have had it a day before!).

I bought 'Get Ready' on a street in Russia one month before its official release in the UK. It looked like an ordinary CD, with cover, with labels. The only thing that differed was a 2001 picture of the band on the backcover.

Just got “in session” in Tower Dublin.

Sleeve is by Saville (I was right) along the same lines as the last 2 BBC releases. To start with the positive:

The web cast of transmission is really good. Seems to be is shot in Steve's studio (TBTHOG poster on the wall). To me it’s the best joy division “cover” new order have done. Paradise is really good too (I love that song) your silent face comes across well. The others are ok (I don’t think rock the shack or slow jam should be on any new order collection), but the “new” versions of true faith and touched (as it is now apparently called) don’t work in a “session” or “studio” at all. I think that new intro to true faith sounds really good live, but it don’t here! Touched is terrible. Espically that “do do do” bit Just after the first “touched” lyric. I don’t know how NewOrder reimagine themselves, but if this particular re working is anything to go by, then it’s not the way I would have hoped. To use a particularly bad analogy, put Heinz ketchup on your 5star dinner.

Anyhow, that’s what I think (Just first thoughts) I didn’t care much for “get ready” on first listen either, but oh how its grown. Got “things to make and do” by moloko as well, and its already getting more play than “in session”!

yeah, Diddnt expect to see it there, gave the new order section the once over and dizzam I used to work in a record shop, and when the boxes came in, they went out on the shelves. I guess tower is overstaffed.

I have been to every major record shop in my area (HMV,Virgin,MusicZone,MVC) as well as Borders,WH Smiths,Woolworths & Asda. NO-ONE AS THE ALBUM IN STOCK . HMV said they had 1 copy in but an employee bought it! Its a fuckin disgrace!

Its not worth the fuss. im sure itll be in the shops some day soon. honestly, i dont know how long it takes you to get to liverpool, but it cant be worth it for this cd.

Sounded pretty impressive on the way in to work this morning. 1st time I've heard the GR tracks like this and quite liked them.

Wonder if 445 has had those calls returned...

Well, I (finally) got my copy of 'In Session' today from Amazon, and I have to say, I'm sitting here having a few beers, and playing it a couple of times while the missus is out on the beer, and I'm loving it.

As has been mentioned, It's better having a mastered, CD copy of these tracks than the taped versions off the radio I can never be bothered to dig out. Kind of like hearing them for the first time again.

The thing these tracks have in common with the early Peel Sessions is their 'live' sound, with rough guitar playing and raw production. Don't agree with those that criticize the versions of 'True Faith' and 'Touched', as we're all familiar with these lively interpretations from the live sets and DVDs. I think these are the best versions of these two songs so far - a shame Barney regressed back the the Hague-friendly "They're affraid of what they see" line rather than the original "drugs with me" line he uses live, but it's otherwise great. Don't know which 'doo doo doo' bit of 'Touched' that Clockwork C didn't like, because I think you mean the orchestra hits which were on the original anyway! 'Touched' is great for that additional instrumental passage in the middle with swirly synth effects. 'Isolation' and 'Paradise' also rock.

This CD kind of reminds me of the 'Substance' re-recordings of 'Confusion' and 'Temptation', as this CD represents how the songs sound when played live, so I think it's an important New Order document. The closest you can get to studio recordings of the rearranged live versions - and without any of that distracting crowd noise.

As for the Lamacq session tracks, well 'Close Range' and 'Slow Jam' were never anyone's favourite New Order songs, but they're still better than the output of most bands, and - again - these versions are wonderfully spontaneous and lively. I see there's the obligatory incorrect credit on the tracklisting though - Bobby Gillespie sings Backing vocals on 'True Faith', not 'Rock The Shack' on these session versions. If I remember correctly, Bobby also mixed the Peel session tracks - in which case that's a job well done, although it doesn't say on the sleeve. No mention of if these were recorded at Maida Vale or in New Order's own studio, either. I've a feeling the tracks were "submitted" by New Order, rather than them making a special visit into Radio 1's studios, as is the norm.

And, as always, 'Atmosphere' is timeless, even when Barney sings it - which is no bad thing. A shame they put 'Transmisson' on there as just an enhanced video - surely there was space to put the CD audio version of it on there as well? I can never be arsed to watch those PC bonus videos and bits - too much hassle.

Why, which one don't you like?? I don't mind either of them - they're nice, rocking out songs, and New Order happen to be very good at that when they do it. I like Close Range. I like RTS. And I like Shellshock.

Got my copy and I have to say it's very good. Session 98 is excellent apart from Paradise which Barney struggles with the key and the toms in Atmosphere seem a bit dull. The Get Ready songs come across well too. YSF apart maybe they could have done a song like Someone Like You say instead of RTS and I agree with the comment that Transmission should have been added as an audio track just to complete the session mode. All in all though a good buy.

Well, that was refreshing! Picking Paradise and Close Range as the highlights!

So what’s the average price for a cd in the UK then? I received mine today from Amazon. Price of cd GBP 9.23 plus postage and vat, adding up to a total of GBP 13.37 = EUR 20.29. Average price of a new cd here is EUR 21.00 so it’s still short of that!

Having just read the previous comments I had to laugh because I was going to ask if Gillian sang the backing on True Faith - Andy, are you sure it’s Bobby Gillespie?

I wouldn’t say Paradise is the highlight but it certainly rocks. My favourite is Slow Jam, better than on the album. I like this version of Rock the Shack better as well, with the extended lyrics. I had only heard the ‘new’ True Faith and TBTHOG live, but I have to disagree with Clockwork, I think it works well in the studio. In short, even though there’s nothing really new on it (and I’ve already got the Transmission footage) I love it, from start to finish.

Another question, I’ve got a cdr with a Lamacq session dated 16th October, but ‘in session’ gives the date as 17th October. Were there two sessions? It sounds the same to me ?!

Oh and Casey, lovely avatar, the only reason I’ve got for ever watching Everton keep it for a while please!

My favorite part was when the typical American indie rock reviewer suddenly realized that New Order--a supposedly disposable, 80's synth-pop dance band worthy of being derided by the U.S. indie elitists as another just Depeche Mode--was actually the same group that produced the much-revered and -namedropped music of Joy Division. What an epiphany, dipshit. Pretty good review, otherwise.

Well, I'm sure it was mentioned on the show when the session was broadcast by New Order themselves in conversation with Jonh Peel - but I don't know absolutely, for certain. I know Bobby Gillespie often sings very high, and when have we known Gillian to do a bit of backing in this day and age? Certainly sounds like him.

John Peel's sessions go out on one night, over the space of a whole show. Steve Lamacq's are spread over four days - with a song every day between Monday and Thursday. That makes it all the same "session", just elongated a bit!

At the time it was mentioned that he was doing some sessions at the same place, stuck his head round the door and ended up doing backing vocals. Close Range sounds much improved on here, always thought it was under-rated, shame no Someone Like You tho, my personal GR favourite. Rock The Shack is poo as ever, mind..

Same for the American poster, they have a US site as well, possibly Cd-wow.net. Use them, it's what they are there for. I don't remember the last time I bought a CD album in a shop

Sure CD-wow sounds great...but they have emailed me twice to push out the ship date...had to go to Amazon and they shipped it the same day!!!

Thanks for the tip, I've had a look and placed my first order this morning. Two double cds for the grand total of GBP 15.98 and no postage! Catalogue isn't very big, but I'll keep an eye on it anyway. Now the waiting is to see what their delivery service is like. Not too good judging by previous comments made.

Okay... We're referring to the same bits: the orchestra hits, as commonly found on every keyboard since about 1983. An orchestra hit is litterally a sample of the very last note that an orchestra plays at the end crescendo of a performance. Sample that single note with it's natural ambience, then play it on different notes (namely D and C, then D again), you get the DO DO DO bit (can't believe I'm typind this). The other do do do do do do bits is a synth playing D D E F C A using a straightforward sounding synth patch. Granted, orchestra hits were done to death in the 80s (especially be the Pet Shop Boys), but I love 'em, and happen to think they need a resurgence in modern times!

Anyway, both bits have been on all the New Order versions over the years, and are an integral part of the song, fillin gin the gap between each line of vocals.

I think what you are referring to about how it sounds, is probably New Order using a different orchestra hit sample to that which featured on the earlier live versions or single mixes. I hear no difference, other than that the session versions sound a little 'drier' with no reverb or effects applied to it.

Anyway, I think it belongs in the track.

Liked the go at Transmisssion but it lacked any oomph. I think Barney just got bored of it towards the end. Were they hiding Phil on that one as he was allowed to lurk at the back or was prowse just obsessed with barney's nostril.

Finally got my copy today! As you know, Germany was a bit late with the release date, so officially TODAY is the day. Thanks to Amazon Germany who shipped mine already on saturday i still listen to it at 11 o'clock in the morning with two bottles of beck's beer. I owned the mp3's before, but i MUST say it's a completely different experience now! Without any "distorting" noise from the radio and mastered i even tend to like "Slow Jam" and "Close Range"... great versions! Still my favourite, the immortal "Your Silent Face". A must-have... Cheers! :beer2:

Bobby Gillespie mixed the John Peel session (first five tracks) and added backing vocals to 'True Faith'. Don't think he's on the other tracks (the 'sha la la la la' bits on 'Paradise' being samples, as they are also on the 3 16 live version). He's now't to do with the 2001 Lamacq tracks, so yep, it's another error!
