Celluloid Order??

I had to teach a class on 'queer cinema' yesterday, and as part of the preparation I watched Gregg Araki's "The Living End" which has a bunch of JD references (guy gets diagnosed as HIV-positive; the first thing he says is "I gotta stop listening to Joy Division records". Later, the same bloke tells his friend about Curtis's suicide, and claims that Ian hung himself by tying a rope aropund his neck and standing on a block of ice waiting for it to melt!?!?).

So, including the recent "Shaun of the Dead" and "24HPP", plus appearing on the soundtrack of (off the top of my head) "Salvation", "Pretty in Pink", "American Psycho", "The Wedding Singer", "Trainspotting", where else do NO/JD appear in the movies????

That image was on an early Police single, which may have been Cant stand losin you. The block of ice was next to an electric fire

That must've been when I was a teenager - I can't remember back that long but it rings some distant bells.

Chances are that James Herbert didn't use those as an intentional nod towards New Order though...!!!

That was Nine Inch Nails covering Dead Souls. And there was a cover of IALP by Bush in the second Crow movie, I'm told. That recent Buffalo Soldiers movie had Blue Monday in it.

I'm wondering if New Order covers have appeared in films even more than the original songs?

Blade? I challenge you to identify any part of that travesty that is identifyable as from the original confusion. Or anything that sounds remotely like it.

Ah, there was another Gregg Araki movie that has NO on the soundtrack, Splendor, listed in the discography here, with BLT. Watched the movie once, and all I can recall is being bored with his style, though the soundtrack wasn't too bad.

At least he's no Derek Jarman! Actually Jarman's not that bad, but I watched "The Angelic Conversation" recently and it was AWFUL. Like a 60 minute Smiths video, minus the Smiths...and a lot more repetitious.

Not to be a trainspotter, but True Faith was at the very beginning of the movie, right after the credits. The scene you're talking about (almost near the end), features Information Society's "What's on Your Mind?"

yep thats right ,lwtua turns up when donnie is at that party and starts tripping out (at least i think he was trippin),damn strange film that. and walking tall is the rocks latest poor effort. new order tunes well steve n gillian did the "making out" tv series backing music but vanishing point was the title track. nerw order have also been used umpteen times by the bbc as backing music for various televised sporting events. the most memorable for me was the 100 greatest world cup goals to the tune of love vigilantes (instrumental). ive got this on vhs somewhere and wil dig it out when i get tha chane. not seen it in years myself ,would be nice to watch it again

I think LWTUA also features in one of these so called mockumentary type films. The film if I recall correctly is called "SERIES 7 (The Contenders)". The film itself is no doubt meant to be some kind of insightful parody of television but thankfully it turns into an Ealing Comedy, with a murderous nurse and a Psychotic single mum slugging it out. Great stuff. The film is worth a look if you like that kind of thing, which I do.

No, you're hallucinating...the Smiths are mentioned, but no JD/NO (also no mention in the book).

On the plus side, I don't think The Cure is mentioned once during the film

Ah yes, I remember that movie. I watched it late at night, hoping to spot the LWTUA. It ended up being over some grainy footage that two former "goths" had short as a cheesy Gothic home movie back in high school, something about their love for each other. Of course, now they are older and one of them has to go off and fight in this kill-or-be-killed reality TV thing (I think he has cancer too or something), so they reminisce and whatnot. But a weird version of LWTUA, if I recall correctly. It was Joy Division, but didn't sound the same...they must've put it through some sort of device to change the tone.
