Top Ten Punk Singles (it could be you!)

Been inspired by reading England's Dreaming as well as the recent Mojo top 50 Punk singles article to come up with my own little countdown, based on my love of punk and post-punk. While I'm not quite as daring as to undertake a 50-count listing, ten should be more than enough. So here goes: 10.Final Solution-Pere Ubu 9. That's when I reach for my revolver-Mission of Burma 8. (Keep in mind these are my own personnal preference before you list all the Slits and X singles I failed to mention. I'm familiar with only so much)

Special mentions: Radio Free Europe (REM), Take Me to The River (Talking Heads), This Charming Man (Smiths), White Man in Hammersmith (Clash), What Do I get? (Buzzcocks)

Oh please Tabsy, don't get me started.....how can I possibly list them all? I was thinking of setting a thread for everybody's all-time Christmas Top Twenty (ie, in the most sardonic context, of course) as my supermarket is already inflicting its annual ritual of Japanese Water Torture on their customers by playing all those godawful cringeworthy Xmas Classics once more......It makes me so sick to hear all that shit , period. Bonfire night isn't even over yet in this country, and here they are, desperately trying to ram the Festering season down our throats yet again. God, how short is a year nowadays???!!!

Anyway, I certainly WILL compile a list of my noisiest, angriest, most unlistenable "Christmas Classics" in due course, and I do hope some of you will join in the fun and help me bludgeon the tedious crapfest senseless in the process...

Ah, we have something in common, working at grocery stores...yes, Xmas is a time to break out all the tried and true bullshit that gets played continuously, and I can only look forward to it with a revolver pressed against my temples for the next time I hear 'Have a Holly Jolly Christmas!' playing over the PA. Believe me, there have been times where I just wanted to pop in a Sex Pistols cd into th Muzak box (no joke, they actually call it that on the outside packaging) just to see what everyone's reaction would be. You know, in reference to your "Christmas music post", I'd nominate Bodies by the SP's, that would be apprpriate don't ya think...

Best "Xmas" record anyone can possibly play just to whip the collected folks up into a truly truly festive mood at your supermarket:

Try "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the mighty Residents. You'll love it, darlings (I do - loads!!!)

Like I said, my punk knowledge is limited, though I like to think I've been able to access the best of the genre. I mainly put in Talking Heads because I like David Byrne's definition of punk as more an attitude than a particular style. MOB is also a fave, though I've been lazy about picking anything of theirs up.

I quite agree! - think it's wrong to stigmatize. Joy Division had a couple of songs with punky feeling on "An ideal for living" and three/four on "Still" (imo): - Wire was more theatrical and Joy Division were whole lot better than the rest when it came to lyrics. Never thought of REM & The Smiths as punk.

Any surprise here, Jim, that I saw the Flag? Very intense live. They were scheduled to play outside at the U of Oregon on a bright spring day in 85, with Gone and Painted Willie. Of course, the cops came before BF played, so they played later that night at the frat where they taped Animal House. Great gig, and Henry even said so in his Get In The Van book.

Went with a friend who had an obsession for Lydia Lunch, and he tried to ask Henry about his part. He cut him off rather quickly, saying "It's not my gig, I had nothing to do with it, I was just a hired hand" and left it at that. End of conversation.

Perhaps one of the great underestimated influential punk bands was Australia's The Saints. And I'm not just flying my flag here. Some of their seminal work was momentous and pre-dated the Sex Pistols, etc.

not surprised at all, we are the seniors here if only the youngins here knew what they were missing. the Black Flag show was wild; was only about 250 :kids: at the local V.F.W. hall, but they place was wild
