There's many stories about your enjoyable experiences involving all things New Order, but what about your memories of really toe-curlingly bad ones some way or other (loosely or otherwise) connected with the band? Like, say, someone throwing up on your pizza whilst you were trying to eat it, whilst"Temptation" happened to be playing in the background...that sort of thing.... There must be horrid experiences you'd rather forget but surely wouldn't mind sharing with the rest of us....
One of my most memorable goes back to 1984 whilst I was still living near Liverpool. I was in New Brighton - a now-defunct seaside town on the Wirral - walking along the prom on a wonderful summers day when I happened across a roadshow held by the local station Radio City, just outside the amusement arcades. The guy who was dee-jaying was dressed like a complete twat (80's mullet, day-glo Timmy mallet-style shirt, shorts, non-matching flip flops - fuckin' horrible) and loads of screaming Duranies and Culture Clubbies were haranguing him as he tried unsuccessfully, to get the vibe going by rapping in his flat monotone blocked-nose Scouse accent (I'm allowed to slag this off as I was a Scouser by birth, so there!) the words of Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" over the top of the instrumental mix (b-side obviously) of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax". Extremely badly. Can you believe that?? It was truly cringeworthy stuff. UGH!!! The reason why I blanch at the memory was that after three or so minutes of this tone-deaf hollering, he segued straight into, unbelievably, "Blue Monday" and....CONTINUED RAPPING OVER THE TOP OF IT!! Still COMPLETELY OUT OF TIME. It was fucking horrible. :\puke: I could even hear his epiglottis twanging as those flat whiney vowels smacked into my lugs with the force of brickbats. (Peter Hooton of The Farm could've done a better job without even opening his fucking mouth!!)
It was all I could do...I legged it as quickly as I could take myself and promised to myself never ever to stumble across a Radio City live summer roadshow ever again. Perhaps this was the real reason why I can't stand "Blue Monday" anymore...after hearing what this lardybutted fuckwit did to it in the name of "entertainment".
Truly a traumatic moment in my life then all told...... ![]()
