Hi all - Candy's back Just stumbled across this website - almost as funny as that Belgian guy doing Karate Kid moves. Check out the 'sound clips' - quite sad. Also a very clever title for a JD cover band - "Joy Division 2000". Bet that took ages to come up with.

What a fitting topic to address with my 500th post (moment of revelry enuses)...
Yes I've ran across that site, bizarre little thing that, surprised I hadn't thought to mention it before. From the photo archives (sorry, I couldn't get to the audio section if I tried), it looks pretty sad, though they get kudos for not having an Ian-lookalike on the vocals (though he does affect those mannerisms, i.e. Clutching the mike stand, looking down, etc etc, that you associate with Ian). Don't you think they'd update to "Joy Division 2001" or Joy Division 2002", seeing as the change of year is so close? Or go by the muslim calender and do "Joy Division 1788 (just a rough guess, anyone who actually knows the offical Moslem designation feel free to correct me)"? What about a Chinese year designation (ie Joy Division Year of the Dragon)? Perhaps I'm putting WAY too much thought into this...
In conclusion, then, doesn't it seem like copyright infringement to call yourself "Joy Division"? Would that be intellectual property free to any crappy tribute band to use, or can NO actually sue if they were alerted? Dunno...
Come now Tabsy...you know New Order can't be bothered with getting involved in legal matters...I mean surely, if they gave a rat's arse about these types of things, they would sue Orgy for impersonating a real band!!!!
On the topic of JD cover/tribute bands.. I saw an aussie version in Newcastle back in 1988 when I was a poor uni student, scraped enough money to buy piss but no the cover charge..so my gig nights are only to those freebie cover bands ones... But this band called 'Australian Joy Division Show' or something like that...was quite good...very heavy bass throughout...okay singing...but funny thing, I've never heard anything from them since... Maybe they've gone big and become 'Australian Doors Show'...don't you think sometimes The Doors do sound like JD?

If memory serves me well, I believe it was the Australians who invented this concept of "tribute" band. Nearly all of them were from Oz back in the late 80s/ealy 90s. Well, funny how things turn full circle, because here in England, we now have several further UK tributes to Australian bands: namely Men Out Of Work (from Liverpool) Midnight Owl (guess who they're indebted to); KICK (INXS tribute); The Skinny Bitches (a Kylie tribute BAND!!) and, best of all, no less than THREE Rolf Harris tributes: I Can't Believe It's Not Rolf! ; R H & The Wobbleboards ; and Harris Rolf. Brilliant!! :D

Very good, Martin...err..Gary? Yes, down under is the homeland of FABBA , BJORN AGAIN etc... I've even seen a local Newcastle ( Australia, i.e. ) band that did mostly Smiths songs on their gigs....Too bad, they didn't last long. ( Actually the lead singer spotted Morrisey's haircut & glasses )
