Yesterday, all my problems seemed so far away.

Yesterday, I spent some time listening to Retro. And suddenly, during Slow Jam, it appeared to me that this song resembled State of the Nation very much. Similar music, similar incoherence of the lyrics...
Am I the only one to think so? Please discuss...

Song construction wise, they are very similar. If you take the guitar chords on State of the Nation and reverse them, they will sound rather similar to Slow Jam. You could easily play the Slow Jam chord pattern along with State of the Nation. If I could bear to listen to either, I would do one of those mesh jobs for comparison.

I know what you mean, but I don't find them similar when it comes to song structure/music. I do find a similarity when it comes to the lyrics. Both give off a desolation feel.
Then again, so do half of new order lyrics. ;)
hell, they sound nothing alike to me. i can't stand state of the nation, and i'm quite fond of slow jam. as far as i can tell, the only similarity is that they've both got that fist-pumpin', power-ballad thing going on. it works for the latter but not for the former, i'm afraid.
State of the Nation is a regretable, but somehow stupid fun song. I enjoy it occasionally, but mostly for the 'whoops.'

Slow Jam's pretty crap though.
I know not too many people on here like Slow Jam, but I think it is a great song. State of the Nation is ok, not one of my favorites though.
State of the Nation was one of those songs like Shellshock that proved despite having better technology and skills and creating a masterpiece, TPK, shit can flow form the studio. It takes a retreat to Ibiza and alot of drugs to correct that situation.
Slow Jam is a guitar based number that probably emerge from Barney and Peter get together at someones house and jamming. Given that by now they are no longer fretting over how to pay for their next meal and roof over their heads, this appears to be an affirmation of their lives. Not bad, not ground breaking, not rocking the boat. "I don't want the world to change. I like the way it is."
personally, I prefer Slow Jam. I'd would play this for someone who has never experience NO before I would expose them to State of the Nation.
