EGG / Temptation / Ceremony original releases

Hello everybody, I've been enjoying the messageboard for a while now, I'm always impressed by everyones knowledge on here, perhaps you can help me out?

I know that Temptation was released on 7" and 12" which comprised 2 different takes, and that Ceremony/IALP was rerecorded for a second 12" when Gillian joined, what I'm trying to work out is if EGG is different on the two vynil formats. I've got an MP3 of the 7"version, and I can't work out if it is an edit of the 12", if the 12" is an extention of the 7", or if its a totally different take.

Also, with these early singles, did the 7" & 12" get released simultaniously, or for example was one version of temptation released before the other?

according to this site the EGG 7" is 4:15 in length Sept 1981, while the 12" is 5:30 released Dec 1981. don't remember if it is an edit or not, seem to remember that it is not

the "Temptation" 12" and 7" are suppossed to in theory flow into one another. the 7" starts up and fades, the 12" fades in and then stops at the end

Never heard of that before, will have to get my 7" & 12" singles and see if it works.

Listening to both the 7" & 12" of temptation, they both sound quite different in tone and 'feel' - as if they were different recordings or takes. The 7" sounds a bit 'softer' (for want of a better description) and the 12" with much clearer sequencer sounds, harder drums etc.

Was the 7" an edit of the 12" or is there more to it than that? I always thought they were 2 different takes.

*Welcome mate, the painting in your avatar (which needs a slight resizing though ;) ) was used on the cover of the most important album of the Italian new wave, Siberia by Diaframma, a band which was heavily influenced by Joy Division... the singer (a bit silly, I know) even used to do the Ian dance... I guess you just chose it because you like it, anyway it's a candidate for most arty avatar of the forum... I think we should have a sort of Avatars Award here: sexiest avatar, funniest avatar etc... will work on it, check State Of The Nation soon ;)

I seem to remember that the 7" and 12"s of everything's gone green appeared at different times, due to the 12" being a benelux import

Right,theres a difficult way to say this,and an easy way. Heres the EASY way: find a picture you wanna use on line,click right on yer mouse on it then click on properties at the bottom of the box. Copy the URL code from it then type that in on your member profile.

Said painting is "Hunters in the Snow" by Pieter Brueghel and used to hang in my Dad's house in Nottingham when I was a kid - well, a print of it did, not the original obviously. Welcome to the site.

I think the 7" edit of EGG was just that, an edit, edited down from the full length take. And no, the nine different sleeves don't have nine different versions. :)

I must admit, I have always considered "Procession" as the lead track, although there is no way to distinguish any order of precedence beyond the use of "hard" and "soft" etched into the run-off groove.

Tempaption 7" is a different recording altogether from the 12" - Barney's vocals are more 'serious' and Movement-like so I wonder if the 7" was recorded a bit earlier. They played this version on Riverside in January 1982.

To my mind, Procession was the a-side of the 7" and EGG the b-side. Peel always played Procession as the main track and it was in the Festive 50 that year. I think EGG was released later as a 12" on FBN.

AFAIK...

EGG 7" is an edit of the 12" (shorter intro, fade out at the end).

Procession is the A side.

Temptation 7" and 12" are different takes (pretty obvious, that!).

Both singles preceded their respective 12", but not sure by how long.

Thanks for everyone's reply, I've made the Breugel picture a bit narrower now.. I was a bit surprised to see how big it originaly was.

I'll never forget when I first read on here that the 7" of Temptation was a completely different take. I've collected all the 12" singles and had never bothered with the 7"s because I thought they were just going to be shorter versions. And I always want as much New Order as possible. If you haven't heard the 7" version I'd recommend you track it down, very different to both the Substance and 1981-83 EP versions.

I was asking about if New Order used to release the 7" and 12" versions on the same day. I was under the impression that some of the Joy Division singles were initially released on one format, with the second version sometimes being weeks later. I also thought that the 7" was released on Factory, and the 12" on Factory Benelux, so I was just wondering if one came before the other.

Scratched out on the run out groove on the 7" version of Temptation is "Try listening to the 12 inch" and on the 12" it says "What do you think?". I 've also heard that they were supposed to flow in to each other.

I believe the 7" was released late 4/82 with the 12" released one week later

With JD, the 12" of Transmission and LWTUA were much, much later (i.e posthumous releases). And you're right about FBN releasing the 12" of EGG (came out as a CDs ingle in 1990, too).
