Each NO member's finest moments? — Forum Archive

What do you think is each New Order member's finest musical achievements within, or outside of the band? (Side projects, guest appearances, etc.) I'm thinking more of singular input here rather than on the whole. I've included my 4 opinions per person below. It's a toughy this one simply due to the sheer output the band has had since their "original" formation in '76. I've tried to avoid using "greatest hits" like Regret, Blue Monday and True Faith because they do seem like "band efforts" with each member having a chance to shine.

Barney All The Way - superb lyrics, and he must've been tired after the spectacular guitar riffing. Some Distant Memory - more personal lyrics, heavenly synths, excellent song arrangement. Special - Probably his best vocal performance, and (perhaps) best ever songwriting. Leave Me Alone - An early gem, a Bernard great simply due to the 'lonely' lyrics and guitar.

Hooky Wdywfm? - Naturally! The best thing he's ever written (with Pottsy) plus one of his best basslines. Age Of Consent - Without that bass it would just be boring wouldn't it? State of Shock - A Revenge track that's actually musically and lyrically *shock horror* very good. Dreams Never End - One of the few highlights from Movement, speedy Bass + Vox provided.

Steve Perfect Kiss - Simply for the sheer amount of programming and effort he obviously put into this song. Avalanche - Originally an O2 instrumental, mellow drumming style + atmospheric synths. Transmission - Breakthrough JD track featuring incredibly powerful drumming. The River - Personal fave from Superhighways, obviously written by Steve/Gillian.

Gillian Tasty Fish - Kind of obvious, but a great pop song and proof she can sing. Avalanche - Her 2nd (?) ever contribution of vocals to a New Order track. Weird Woman - Great track, very good vocal performance and swansong for O2's final album. Innocence - The Love to Infinity mix of this track is brilliant, great house music.

There are probably others I've forgotten, but what do you think?

What are your top 4-5 tracks per NewOrder person?

Barney - Temptation, The Sound Of Music, Regret and Haze. A mixture of cracking guitar playing and lyrics.

Hooky - DNE, AOC, WDYWFM and YSF. Not too far away from the choices above and for the same reasons really, I love the rolling basslines in YSF - which is a reason I nearly chose Face Up instead.

Stephen - She's Lost Control, AOC, Ceremony and VP. Showing a full range of drumming techniques - the man is one of the best I've seen. His drumming was that good on TPK he wasnae even near the drums!

Gillian - AIIWIW, YSF, Tasty Fish, Touched Video. Guitar, keyboards, vocals and sex.

Wouldn't necessarily say these are my favourite four from each, but off the top of ma heid they'll do.

Mr Sumner is very thankful for the credit for guitar work on The Sound of Music. Mr Hook is somewhat miffed though, as he was sole twanger on that one !

We've had this discussion before. Are you 100% that the guitar is not Barney? It smacks of his playing in songs like Digital and Disorder.

If yer right - I will simply add Love Vigilantes to Barney's credits, Special is a close runner in the lyric stakes though.

HATYM video shows Hooky on guitar and Barney on bass for this one - obviously they may not have stuck to this in the studio. You're right about the playing style though, definitely.

Hooky - Being the leader of Hooky and The Boys and getting his REVENGE with "What Do You Want From Me"

Steve - Unplugging the synth on which Blue Monday had been programmed but not saved. :eek: :eek: :eek: (or shagging Gillian when she WAS fit.) :love2:

Gillian - Making the tea or averting her eyes from Tony Wilsons cock during the Play at Home programme. :laugh: :laugh: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Bernard: Unfortunately, he peaked on Electronic's eponymous album, truly the follower to Technique, just imagine it with the rest of New Order and it would be perfect.

Hooky: Surely not on Republic ;) Regret is probably his best performance (and most noticable), even if it's on Republic. With Monaco, his performance on "End of the World" is noticable.

Steve: She's Lost Control and In A Lonely Place (I couldn't do that, very repetive and long)

Gillian: If she did Dream Attack, then it's an easy call.. I can't see how much she's responsable of the synths on Technique, otherwise I would be happy with Round & Round!

Barney - vocals on World, Tighten Up, Everyone Everywhere, Dream Attack. Guitar on Temptation and Ceremony. Hooky - The Perfect Kiss, Crystal. I haven't listened to much of his side-project work, but it didn't impress me, from what I heard. Steve - beginning of "This Time of Night" and "Vanishing point." Drum machine on Blue Monday and TPK. Gillian - Dream Attack and Avalanche.

I've tried to steer clear of the many good shouts so far...

Barney - "I feel so extraordinary, something's got a hold on me, I get this feeling I'm in motion, a sudden sense of liberty."

Hooky - Performing 'The Happy One' live on TOSOM for AHW. "Keep music live. ALL those machines were live!"

Steve - I've always loved the drum patterns on "Don't Do It"

Gillian - Dream Attack. (or maybe the TBTHOG video ;))
