The less you analyze Barney's lyrics, the better off you are.

I love this song but wouldn't even begin to try to make sense out of the lyrics. Damn good tune though!!!

the first passage above is one of Barney's best lyrics in my opinion...oh and I stole my sig from there to :D

They are actually fantastic genius lyrics up there with many great lyricists.

I agree with you, but when you put Barney's lyrics up against Ian's, Ian wins hands down, but Ian was more of a poet than a lyricist. The great thing about Barney is to see how much his writing has matured over the years.

Bernard is a very under-rated lyricist, but probably doesn't have the quality control issue sorted. Ian was quite good at knowing what was shit, Bernard seems to record it even if it is shit (i.e. Every Little Counts, that "paracites and literacites" line in All The Way, All Day Long, several others).

"All The Way" is one of my favourite songs on "Technique", but what the hell are "literacites"?

the song seems confusing because Barney is confused...

He feels isolated and alienated, but also sees that other people feel that way, seems like others experience the same thing as he experiences and human beings have always had these feelings, and Barney is feeling a connection to other human beings that is contradicted by his own alienation.... the human condition.
he has trouble communicating and feels that others do not understand him and he tries and then fails, and it is depressing. but he still feels the need to connect across the breach to others, always wants to leave the "island" and make contact or communicate. life is confusing and hard to pin down and understand... sometimes you want to take the chance to reach out but it fails and disappoints so you withdraw back to your subjective "isle" and just want to left alone for awhile, and it sucks and you're bummed. there are no easy answers to life... if the song was more straightforward it would be less true, and more cliched.... one of Barney's most moving songs, and musically fitting and great also.

I nearly always fall asleep when this song comes on! It's about the only song that does that to me.

I'm not dissing it - I think it's a great song. But, for some reason, I always drift off (in a very nice, calm, comforted way) when I hear it. Even when I'm driving*.

*That last bit, thankfully, is a lie.

"For these last few days" implies somone at the end of their life, or at the end of a stage in their life - perhaps they're planning to leave somewhere.

Listen to the Newcastle 1982 gig. I think this may have been the second or third time Leave me Alone was played live. Lyrics totally different and still fantastic.
