Well, I did include Substance because it included True Faith which was released at the same time...
Quite simple, you became a fan bought their back catalogue, you knew a new album will be released.. which one was it? What is the first NO album you bought on its release date or so because you HAD to have it?
Republic for me, I became a fan in 1990, so Republic was the first release they had AFTER I became a fan.
I was so unlucky to become a fan in the summer of 1994 and hence had to wait for 7 years for a new album so far.
Low Life was the album i had to wait for.I became a fan October 83 upon hearing PCL.Thieves Like Us was the first single after i became a fan and it was a long long wait till Low Life came out May 85.
Heard Blue Monday at a party in the summer of '84. My friend had lot's of New Order and Joy Division in his collection so he made me a tape. And then another. Soon I began buying everything myself. Loved the music right away but the vocals had to grow on me. I didn't really appreciate JD 'til a few years later.
I am not sure which album specifically but I know I had a bunch of singles before I ever got an album so I went with substance seeing as I might of had a lot of those songs anyway.
After I became a fan (in 2000, if you're interested), Get Ready was the one I had to wait for.

Post Joy Division ,they were the ones I waited for , though at one point I thought that the 3 remaining JD members would go their seperate ways. Bought Movement from Robinsons Records , Blackfriars street, Manchester . Bought Ceremony in the Underground Market , Manchester. Both had to be played on a mono record player , which was all I had at the time , first time I heard them in stereo was probably in a club called Berlin again in M/Cr
Power,Corruption and Lies. I heard Everythings Gone Green at my school disco of all places! The only 11 year old who knew a good thing when he heard it-unlike my mates with their Duran Duran records!
Well I loved New Order in the 80s (my parents got me into music very early!) so I knew some of their tunes.
But......... No I didn't buy Republic first I bought Technique then Republic.... then all of the singles from Republic! 
I wasn't as hip as Green...I heard Blue Monday in 84...then had to wait for low-life...but it was well worth it!!!

he was playing the blt remix off substance over and over again,i was so impressed i went out and bought substance on cd,i then went out the week after and bought the entire back catalogue!
i was very impressed with the other albums but pc&l soon became my favourite and probably still is!
i can remember my dad playing love will tear us apart on a hideous sideboard cum record player (the ones were you could get twenty records on at a time!)i was only a snotty nosed kid then tho!

I think I'd heard a few of the tracks from bootleg concert's me and a few mates had purchased or purloined from the Bluecoat chambers record fairs. Definitely had the 'I've got a cock gig' at some point. Initial verdict, not electronic enough, bit of a disappointment.
i had bought Joy Division in 1982 based solely on how much i liked the record covers... by the end of 1982 Joy Division was my favorite band... i knew nothing about the band. in early 83 i got the 1981-1982 EP because it was in the Joy Division bin at the indie record store and really liked Everythings Gone Green after a few listens. then i got the odd unmarked Blue Monday and was blown away, i had no idea on what to expect.
i saw an ad for Power, Corruption, and Lies from Rough Trade in Trouser Press so i checked the record stores 2 or 3 times a week trying to find the new album. i was so happy when i finally found it!
PC&L.for some reason i played YSF side first.Found it almost classical until the "pissoff" line.AOC just blew me away.Adore this album and Lowlife.Heady days indeed.
I was twelve when True Faith came out, thought the video was funny, but thought the song was only so-so. Two years later I heard the DJ on the local mod/alternative station in California rave about a New Order song he'd just played and the album "Substance" which he called his favorite album by far. I checked it out of the library and liked some of it, but not enough. Then, somehow, two years later I heard BLT on the radio and was hooked. Immediately bought Substance and this time was completely won over. Followed the purchase up w/Technique, and later Brotherhood and the Peel Sessions, followed by Low-Life, P.C.L. and finally Movement, loved all of them except for Movement, and was particularly won over when I bought the CD version of Substance, which included so many amazing b-sides.
Anyway from rediscovery in '89, I would have to wait three and a half years until Republic came out. Rather disappointed, loved the opening single Regret, loved World musically but not lyrically, and was a fan of Everyone Everywhere, Young Offender and Times Change, but other than Special and Regret I didn't feel any of it measured up to their back catalogue. I was more impressed w/Get Ready eight years later that didn't feature any classics in the vein of Regret, or Special, but also wasn't loaded down w/throw away trash like I felt Republic was.
...hmmm, nothing to do with an album, but with special songs; first I heard and bought 'TLU/Lonesome Tonight' 12' in Summer of '84, since then I'm a fan; two months later I heard and bought 'Confusion' 12' - without having known 'BM'...
...and 'LWTUA' I knew from the Austrian band 'CHUZPE' (I still have the 7' with the instumental version on the flip side), and they covered it 1980 (!), without having known the band 'JOY DIVISION' by myself...

I bought the cassette version of Substance after getting into True Faith, and I guess it's because of this I've always been really into the b side dub versions. I repeatedly played the tapes all the way through without fast forwarding because even although the styles of music on the two tapes was so varied it was all excellent. So for every time I listened to True Faith or Blue Monday I was also listening to Dub Vulture and Shell Cock.... Tracks I know get dissed on here, but for me they are part of the "Canon" of New Order Recordings through my initial familiarity with them.
Then after Fine Time came out I think I made daily excursions to the record shop to find Technique (Again on tape). I'm still not sure if I got it pre release or not, because I had to ask for it and it wasn't on display anywhere. I can't remember what day it was, but I do remember getting it home and playing it at least once a day for the next two years.
