New Order's new collaborators

The following is a quote from an article in The Observer's Music Monthly magazine about Xenomania, the production house behind hits by Girls Aloud and Sugababes:

Initially reluctant to give examples of the sort of people he's turned down, Higgins is eventually beguiled into letting slip the names of Gareth Gates and Atomic Kitten, with Texas and - any diehard Factory snobs are advised to cover their eyes at this point - New Order among the commissions he has recently accepted. Listening to 'Graffiti My Soul', a standout track from the forthcoming second Girls Aloud album, it's easy to understand what might have drawn the wily Mancunians to Xenomania. Originally written for Britney Spears's last album - 'The record company loved it, but Britney's people said "Where's the chorus? Why are there no repetitive parts?"' - this song now sounds like a full-scale collision between Madonna, Michael Jackson and the Prodigy, with all three operating at the top of their respective games.

they mime on TV, they release singles then put those singles on albums, they regularly have meaningless back-up vocalists adding oohs and ahhs, they've basically abandoned all the things that endeared them to me (and plenty of other fans) but they still hit some incredible highs musically.

Basically, the New Order we grew up loving is dead. They have some second rate session guitarist, they collaborated with a Smashing Pumpkin and played dates supporting Robbie Williams and Moby. What a load of shit. The dream is over but maybe we'll get 3 good songs off the new album. That would be enough for me. Regardless of what they do in the future, they'll always be may favorite group.

St. Etienne fans will be chuffed, though.

Sounds to me like just a remixer...methinks Trappy doth protest overly much. After the messes that Sly and Robbie and Armand Van Helden made, who cares if one more person wants a go at butchering the next Slow Jam? :)

Another topic to debate, which album had better remixes? Republic or Get Ready? I'd give the nod to GR myself, but certainly both are better than some of what landed on The Rest Of... Discuss.

Some of Get Ready's mixes are very good but i've got to go with Republic on this one. Fire Island, Sabres, Fluke, Perfecto & K Klass turned in excellent versions.

All the Republic mixes were listenable. Don't like the Fire Island Regret, Sabres Slo and Lo knocks it into a cocked hat. Reuinited is by far the best, probably the only time I'll admit to liking a mix more than the original.

Can't get on with any of the GR mixes except for Lee Coombs.

The Rest Of seems to get universally slated, I'm probably alone in thinking it's not actually that bad. Four absolute stinkers (BLT, EGG, Temptation and Confusion) but the others are OK. Of the BM mixes (including the bonus disc), I only really like the Hardfloor.

Agree that the Reunited is commonly regarded as the best mix out there of RIAD

Have to say that personally i think the ambient mix suits the song better as its one of their most mournfull/slowest numbers...

Thought the 93 live version was unsurpassable - mixture of Reunited and Ruined.

Just a dirge when it came back in 2001.

I Missed that middle night - got Rock The Shack twice instead

I think they majority of the mixes are quite poor . the only acception to the rule is true faith 94,done by the master himself senor oakenfold,and perhaps the shep pettibone true faith mix. the other/all the mixes seem to be missing something for me,god knows what but again,thats my opinion! regards

Did you know K.Klass actually thought they "Ruined" RIAD,and HATE their mix? Its a fact,Russ Morgan told me that himself in 1995.

I only give the nod to GR cuz I like the original songs on Republic better (with the exception of World, of course)

As for remixes, I like nearly all of the Republic ones... excluding the Sly & Robbie destruction of Ruined In A Day (an appropriately named song I reckon!). As for Get Ready I thought the Crystal mixes were atrocious other than the Lee Coombs version. I've got a 'Soviet Mix' of Crystal which is quite good. All the other mixes were crap I thought other than one of the Here To Stay mixes.

Some fine food for thought there. I'd have to say that the only remixes I prefer to their originals would be:

Subculture Record Mirror / Razormaid Run2 Extended World Prefecto Reunited in a Day 1963 (1995) 60 mah (Khane) Fine Time (DJ Promo version - cheers RM) Spooky Stadium Mix True Faith Pettibone is arguable either way.

Anyone have an idea how much of a cut these producers or remixers get from these records.

They have worked with some pretty high profile people in the past on various projects.

I agree that all of the republic remixes are good EXCEPT the goofball dance hall RIAD...4 (or was it 5) remixes are basically the same...

The Fire Island remix of "Regret" is a work of shimmering beauty!

I've always prefered the Stephen Hague (twelve inch) and Ben Grosse (twelve inch mix) versions of Round & Round to the album mix.

Touched By The Hand Of God - Biff & Memphis Mix World - World In Action Mix Round & Round - Round & Remix 12" Paradise - Robert Racic Mix Confusion - Con-Om-Fus-Ars-Ion Mix and Essential Mix (never really liked the original or the 1987 version)

oh well the Mark E Smith and New Order album that I want so much to hapen wont be then

I hated that mix, I just thought he should've left well enough alone.

Where do you lot hear all these NO remixes? I have only heard what is on the Rest of.

Most of them are on the various singles. Check out the New Order Discography for tracklistings to the singles (and a lot more).

My memory starts to fail me, but I did hear from an insider in the industry that a remixer gets anywhere from the low $1000 to $10000+ for a remix (IIRC). This would be for a known artist/group. Typically they don't get royalty based on number of records sold - that'd require producer credits...
