My Closer CD is rotting!
It's an original Factory issue, I've had it since 1988. Argh! What's a man to do when he can't go to the source to get a new one???
You can see spots on the periphery of the disc in this first photo.
This next one's a closeup of some of the rotting areas. Fuck!
Anybody else have rotting FACDs? I haven't checked the other FACDs in my collection but you bet I will now!

i read something about this happening to lots of cd's manufactured during the late 80's and early 90's. It was in a national newspaper and said that you can get them replaced free of charge :) but i cant remember how i'm afraid :(
one to investigate on t'internet....
Not Factory but my Republic one died a sorry death from this sort of rot. CDs have a limited lifespan! As simple as that. How else could the record companies get us to buy the same disc again?

Sorry to hear that, Drew. All I can say is that my copy is still spotless.
As mentioned above, this problem is a well-known one for some time already. In particular, discs produced by English firm PDO in a given span of about 18 months are said to be badly affected. There are several sites on the net reporting that PDO are prepared to exchange rotted cd's for perfect ones if they are contacted. You can find more information by doing an internet search on "cd rot" & pdo. One site of interest could be this one, where you can find the address of pdo.
The first thing you should do is copy the cd to your computer so you always have a back up. You could get the H&S set which is late 90s and therefore much newer? :\ohwell:
OK, you can forget all I wrote about pdo. I just noticed that the label info on my disc (and yours too) states that it was produced in G.B. by Nimbus. Sorry about that!
This is both fascinating and scary. I've got loads of PDO CDs. I've seen this happen on a batch of CDRs (some of you may have received them from me, I know Geri did) where the disks rotted so badly they became transparent, and while I was aware that CDs have a limited life, I wasn't aware of just how limited that was !
Does this mean my Kajagoogoo CD might melt in my own hands one day as I decide to give "Too Shy" another listen? 
Actually, this does seem to be something any music fan should be upset about. It's one thing to get scratches and such, but to actually have it rotting away is horrific. I hope my Wham CD is okay.....

I know what you mean. One of my worst nightmares is waking up to discover that my entire cd-r collection has rotted away. That's why I always make sure to avoid cheap no-label cd-r's! And I always make safety-copies of all music recorded beyond the 40-minute mark.
Maybe that's why New Order used to do short sets ? So the bootleggers wouldn't go rotten after 40 minutes ?

holy crap i just looked at my Movement Cd and OMG its rotten, this must be a ide spreading Diease, we must find the cure for them!
My Republic and all the associated singles / promos have discoloured badly on the label side, but still play OK. Certainly nothing like the degredation in Drew's pictures. Maybe it's only a matter of time...
I've never had this problem, I have several CDs from the late 1980's early 1990's era which are my dads, they all play fine.

They normally turn up every now and again on gemm.com. you can still get them fairly regularly in good UK second hand shops for between £8 - £10.
Only 2 weeks ago I got a copy of the FACTUS VI CD version for £8 over here. so nil desperandum.

Don't see any problems with my Factory discs (the oldest one owned is Low-Life, purchased in 1987). It could be an issue caused by the meteorological conditions in which you live.
Closer appears to be the only one with problems.
I do have one PDO-manufactured Factory CD, the Blue Monday '88 single. All looks good on that one too.
Breakdown (all original UK Factory issues) for the anal types:

So there you go... the only one of the bunch that's rotting is Closer.
I noticed all my Republic-era singles and albums are PDO but I haven't bothered to check them for rot or other PDO problems as described in Jan's links above.

My 1981-1982 (aka Factus 8) is rotten as hell. However, as it has only a few tracks it has not affected the listening. Yet.

Phew....thanks, drewc....I've been searching hi and lo for the Nimbus Cd version of Unknown Pleasures & Movement....now I know they dont exist.
Also, I believe there is no car-carry case for 'Still'...am I correct?
By the way, my Nimbus CD for Unknown Pleasure looks as bad as the one in the photo.....same goes with my TBTHOG Nimbus CD ( and I believe that its the cardboard sleeve that is affecting the plastic in the disc....)

I never leave CDs in cardboard sleeves. I'm always glad when I manage to get the discs out of the bloody things for the first time without breaking or scratching them, and then I never put them back in.
