"Cider with Roadies"...

.... is the title of Suart Maconie's book about being a pop fan/NME journalist. It's very funny, and there are plenty on New Order references. In particular, in the final pages he claims to have stolen Barney's guitar from the NME offices when he left said publication. The guitar was donated for a competition which Maconie reckons never ran, but I clearly recall that it did (sometime in 1988). Anyhows, there were three questions, two of which were very easy (and hence I can't remember them) but the third stumped me and stopped me entering the comp. And it has haunted me ever since. So, what exactly IS the connection between New Order and Talking Heads (I suspect it may be producer-related.....Steven Hague?????)

The comp ran alright though they never posted a winner as I recall.The guitar being stolen would explain why.talking Heads/New Order,Jonathan Demme?

Ah shite, yes, of course it's bloody Demme. Presumably, then, nobody knew the answer at the time and that's why said guitar never left King's Reach Tower (until Maconie swiped it, of course...)

Incidentally, am I the only person who'd like to kill the smug little cunt who currently edits the NME. He has the kind of face even a gentle soul like me would like to bury a knife in. Very deeply. Of course, the editorial policy is shite as well.......

Sad bastard that I am I know I entered said competition and had the Demme answer thats why i figure maconie buggered off with the guitar before NME had a chance to announce a winner hence no winner.

"Cider With Roadies" is an ace book. I particularly like the anecdote about Hooky in his German U-boat Captain's outfit!

I got Jonathan Demme right too. I demand a guitar!

Mate - sad bastard that I am, I can assure you that Maconie didn't leave the NME until several years after said competition was run......so fook knows why they decided not to give said guitar to the people who wrote in with the correct answer. Perhaps they just liked the guitar????????

Excellent book , picked it up for £3 in Music Zone . As for the NME , no longer an essential purchase , tend to read the news section whilst waiting for a train , then put it back on the shelf and buy a Kit-Kat instead.

Did buy the NME originals, Clash issue ; which only convinced me that todays NME writers are'nt for me , bit of a downer really ... too old for the nme , too young for Mojo and I fuckin detest Q , even City Life ( Manc listings mag ) is turning into a property/lifestyle hybrid .

Is this book available stateside? Doubtful (just answered my own question), but maybe I could get it via Amazon

I've been reading a ton of books this summer, so I'll try and pick this up at some point

By the way, does BIFFO THE BEAR still holds the front page? I dont think we have BEANO here in Australia but I used to survived on these stuffs when I was a small boy in Malaysia....not forgetting DANDY, TOPPER, BREEZER....and of course I eventually graduated to SMASH HITS. Anyone remember the semi-educational mag LOOK & LEARN? I am still waiting for them to re-publish that sci-fi comic THE TRIGAN EMPIRE as a stand alone item. Yeah, u r rite GaryMac, MOJO is too oldies orientated ( too much Dylan, Hendrix, etc..) and Q gone a bit trivialised. You guys remember SELECT, VOX, No.1, ZIGZAG, NEW SOUNDS NEW STYLE?
