Ordered mine by phone with James Nice personally this morning. He seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about both compilations. Looking forward to hearing it.

I'm sure this has been asked before: The Video586 (edit) is a "unique" edit, right? Is is just 6:10 lifted from the full 22:25, or is it some re-edited/sequenced piece?

It is said to be unique, but we'll never know until we get the album...

I received the CD in the mail yesterday morning... as usual, incredibly fast service of James Nice!!
This is not an edit of the CD-released Video586, but a new edit of the soundtrack to the "Prime 586" video that was on the "A Factory Video" VHS (which can be found in the "Media/Video Archives/Miscellaneous" section of this site). Whereas on the video the music is faded in, this version on "Twice As Nice" has a cold start (I think) and fades out at 6'10"; in addition, the two pieces seem to be different edits as well, but I haven't done any close comparison yet.
I have always wondered what the relation between these two "prime" versions of 586 was. If I recall correctly, the "video" section is not part of the 23minute "Video 586" release (for which I was very disappointed at the time).
Well, I have the original Featuremist Touch cassette sampler, and on there can be found "Video 586-1" (6:41) and "Video 586-2" (13:34). The story goes, that these were the beginning and end parts of the full-length original, and that the 'Touch Sampler' which came out in the late 90s featured the "missing" middle section, even though it was called "Video 586-3" (6:57).
There must be some overlap, as if you add all three running times together you get a full-length version of 27:32. The full length "Video 586" on the CD single was 22:22, and is the full, original version as far as I know.
I've not listened to the long version too many times, as it is quite difficult listening, but I get the impression that "Video 586 (Edit)" (6:10) on Twice As Nice is, indeed, a clipped version, rather than just a "segment" on the original.
As for a "Prime" 586, wasn't this just a misprint on some versions of the original cassette Touch Sampler? I'm pretty sure I have all 5 variations on 'Video 586' - all of which are made up of parts of the 22 minute version - and onne of them are called "Prime" on the tracklistings. Unless it was originally called Prime 586 when accompanying the opening of the Hacienda??

Think it was just called "Prime 5-8-6" on the Factory video and the Featuremist tape, but I'm currently at work now, so can't verify!
From memory, there was a discussion on the Ceremony list a while back where -1 went through the different versions?
Quite where the new mix on 'Twice As Nice' fits into all of this, who knows?!
l8rs,
Nick ;)

Whoopeedoo. Now I have to get this too. If anyone is interested in a trade, let me know in private. I've got some stuff for trade...

I'm quite positive that the Feturemist tape calls them "Video". And unless there is a title on the actual video, the track is unnamed on the Factory Video (i.e., not listed).

Yepp, and geeky me saved that message (our discussion is from late December 2003 to early January 2004). Here it is (looks best with equal-sized letter (a'la Courier New):
--- Start of snippet --- even matching up the segment start and finishing points, still does NOT lead to full prime 586..there are still gaps..
prime586-1 -> duration 14m:03sec [0:00---------------------------14:03] prime586(cd) [0:00----[8:21]--------------------------22:05] [<----------------overlap----------->]
prime586-3 -> - duration 6min:58sec [0:00---------------------------------6:58] prime586(cd) [0:00--[0:05]--------------------------------7:03]------------[22:05] [<----------------overlap---------------->]
as you can see, there is a gap between the 7:03 and the 8:21 mark on the cd, if you are using the tape versions as your guide... --- End of snippet ---
(Check the complete discussion in the Ceremony archives for all the details.)

It would be easier if NOOL allowed the CODE tags to get monospaced fonts... Meanwhile, check out the discussion on Ceremony:

Okay, I get this now... But presumably, the missing bit in the middle was part of 586-3, which appeared on the Touch Sampler CD compilation in the late nineties? If the entire thing is 22 minutes, surely part of it has to be the soundtrack to the Factory Video excerpt?
Confusion situation!
