For some time now a number of disparate, similarly interested parties have been discussing the feasibility of some form of space dedicated to Manchester's place in the history of music. Matt Norman (FIG Film, Doves) formed 100% Cotton last year in order to formalise this desire.
At the same time the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (MSIM) began to realise that the music 'Business' in Manchester was as valid an 'industry' as its predecessors Manufacturing and Cotton (MSIM already holds an archive of Factory and Hacienda-related items donated by Rob Gretton himself).
The "Manchester District Music Archive", a not-for-profit organisation, has now been formed as a serious attempt to realise the goal : A permanent archive dedicated to Manchester's music and history.
A seminar is to be held at Manchester's Urbis on September 21st (the last night of 'In the City') with such luminaries as Mark Radcliffe, Jon Savage, CP Lee and Guy Garvey on the panel.
