introducing dinosaurs to New Order

So my uncle calls me up. He is a mere 16 years older than me so we are more like brothers in many way. "Come over to my place, let's drink alot of beer and listen to loud rock and roll. I even have a joint."

His type of music is more of the bar band type bluesy leaning toward country with a bit of Dylan and john Hiat of bands now defunct or ones nobody ever heard of. Nothing commercial, real musicians eeking out a living. Not bad just a bit narrow minded.

20 beers later I slipped in New Order 2001.08.11 Müngersdorfer Stadium Cologne, Germany. He really liked the first three songs, especially Regret and Crystal. Call them rock and roll songs he did. Loved Hooky. But as the keys came out he started frowning. "I don't like techno." Alas, but he did ask that I burn it for him.

I had a similar experiance with my dads girlfriend and Portishead (we weren't getting high tho!) She is a big fan of 70's rock, CSNY, Zeppelin.. etc. I put on Portishead live in NYC and she was really into it until they started scratching on the turntables... She replied "ugg why do they have to do that and ruin a perfectly good song.."

and so it goes... when I'm 45 my my nephew will throw on some band that I like until they start in with the ultra-flapper 3000 synth wave generator... :D

The Smiths said in the mid 80's we don't like electronic music. A couple of years later Marr joined barney to form an electronic band.

I have a mate who hates dance with a passion and used to be nu metal person. Now he is a big New Order and loves stuff like Blue Monday. I am odd in that I like all sorts, from the Smiths, Simon and Garfunkel and NO and JD.

My parents don't really get NO stuff but then my mum is a Cliff Richard fan:D

Steady Timbo , this fella woulda been five or six at time , and as his research into the Killers has shown , he's no slouch with the google ! That said I dont think Marr joined Barney , not sure one joins something that one helps create

However he does say he's odd , and mad , bit like that fella on the fast show with orange curly hair , mithering cunt who tells everyone he's mad ..... name escapes me ,but it may be Colin .

My mother thinks NO are great actually, so she never did mind them coming over the stereo too loud. In fact, at one time she was a member HERE. (Not sure if she still is)

It's hard work introducing new music to people who have never heard it before, i've given up.

And here was me thinking that someone had linked New Order and Palaeontology (my job), only to find that the Dinosaurs were more of the Al Jarvis variety...never mind, I'll go back in me 'ole. CTB

You're a Palaentologist? awesome job, what's it like? Have you found anything significant?

Guilty, m'lud - geeky dinosaur-loving kid that never grew up. I've found a few very nice specimens, but nothing earth shattering in a global sense. I deal with mainly marsupial stuff now, but yeah - nice to get paid to do what you like. CTB
