Was talking to a member of staff in my works today and just got chatting about music, when he asked who i listened to, i said, obviously, New Order and Joy Division amongst others.... to which he told me that growing up in Macclesfield he had been in the same class as Ian Curis. I was amazed!! Apparently, my colleague, Tony, had bought all Ians Deep Purple records from him (probably helped pay for solvents) and they all used to nickname him "Hammy".... He mentioned a load of other names(that ive read about in Deb Curtis's book etc), like Oliver Cleaver (who he said was a bit of a bully) and Kelvin Briggs. I asked him if he remembered Stephen Morris, and he didnt, but said he would ask a few other friends he was still in touch with... I asked Tony...."So what was Ian like then?" to which he replied... "He was always a bit different. In fact he was bloody odd"

Its a small world isnt it...

Is he telling you the truth? If he is it's fucking mad - did Ian sign any of the records?

interesting.....If he's for real, Liv, you could be a part of "Five Degrees of JD/NO"

I think Stephen was expelled from that school a couple years before he graduated...that may be why your friend doesn't remember him but remembers Ian.

I think he's pulling your leg or something,Liv.Sounds like he's just read "Touching from a Distance" and trying to impress . Then again...

God's honest truth, The guy is soooo fucking straight laced, there is no way he would be pulling my leg. I never speak to him, so its not like hes a mate pulling a swift one. He is one of the deputy heads at the school i work at and is notorious for having no sense of humour.

To be honest, if this wasnt the truth i doubt he would even have known who Joy Division are.

I for one beleive him, mainly coz he is too dull and conservative to have made up something like this...

A 40-something Manc I onced worked with (bout 18 months ago) told me a good story about how he got into a scrap with Curtis outside a pub back in 78.....over a girl they were both trying to chat-up. Quote: "He kneed me in the bollox, threw a punch and missed,I threw a punch which missed by a fuckin mile. This tall twat with glasses(who I presume was Rob gretton) pulled me to one side & told unless I fuck-off,he would break me legs"

I did'nt and still don't believe him............i laughed anyway. (he tells it to anyone who shows an intrest in Rock music)
