When you consider BM sold 1.06 million in its three chart entries, surely the first single off the new album could be easily pushed to #1 with some decent promotion. FFS Depeche Mode got #7 this week with a rehash of Enjoy The Silence...

I'll be buying my copy in Belfast or Derry anyway, just to bump the UK sales up - nobody gives a damn about the Irish charts.
It'd be nice to have a "real" number one for the band and not just WIFM.
I still think a reissue of Here To Stay with decent marketing could sell enough to get to number one, but with a new album coming it'd be a bit pointless...

21,800 copies - thats terrible! Used to be normal to have to sell 200,000 to be no.1 - good songs would sell 500,000 in a week!
I'll go up to Newry & Belfast and buy a few copies there - NO will think half their fans have moved to Northern Ireland
Well, at least in the US of A, so few artists (Record companies) release singles anymore here. In the past 15 years or so, the CD singles rack has progressivly gotten smaller and smaller to a point where you can browse the entire rack in mere minutes. The 12" racks have all but dissapeared.
This certainly does not help those figures anymore either...in addition to downloads. 
Everyone buying multiple cpies of the same single has been done before, and worked. This year, I think it was Marillion who got everyone of there wesbite to buy four cpies of their single, and lo and behold, it got to number 5, i think.
I'd like to think there were more New Order fans than Marilion fans so if we all did our bit...

REMEMBER: you cannot buy multiple copies in the same shop - the system will notice that - you have to travel around.
For those in Ireland - remember the 'ask not what your county can do for you adds': G-G-G-Galway - we all should be going around the shops with a boot full of NO singles!

One my claims to fame is my involvement in a chart rigging scam in the early 90's! My mate's band had just released their second single and were already picking up a lot of airplay including Radio 1. Their fanbase though was still tiny. Me and my mate along with a team of other skint students were dispatched by the band's crazy manager to buy up as many copies as possible during the course of the week. We started in Galashiels in the Borders and hit everywhere that had a record shop between there and Inverness. Slept in the car for the duration!
The result...Number 38 in the Top 40 and number 9(!!!) in the Scottish Network Chart.

The next step for the record company, is to then re sell those copies back to the shops who've subsequently run out of stock following the extra demand caused by the publicity of the song reaching the Top 40?!. Genius.
Downloads plus competing attractions for kids' cash. The singles market is still very yoot orientated and when there's mobile ringtones to spend yer loot on who wants a mingy old CD which you can get from Soulseek for nuffink eh?.
If Hear TO Stay was reissued it would sell about 2 copies. All NO fans who wanted it, got it on release, there was a fair bit of publicity around it too cos it was lifted from the 24 Hour Garage People OST.
Only reason to release a single is to promote something, nearly always it's the bands' album. Singles, with a few exceptions, don't make money, albums do.
The new single will be lucky to hit the top 10. Its got no chance of getting to number 1. Snow Patrol limped in at No.39 this week-and theyre probably bigger than NO right now. The majority of singles are bought by kids who can afford a £2 single every saturday out of their pocket money. The album should reach No.1 though-if its released in a week someone like Justin/Beyonce/Robbie hasnt got a new album out! Wonder if they`ll go for the "special edition" treatment most albums get nowdays (limited bonus cd,digipack,free dvd).
What used to be extended 12" versions of songs are now the albums versions, and singles are usually ranked by their radioplay (overplay heh). Radio of course features the stan If singles were a bit cheaper and worth picking up there would be more demand for them. New Order had lots of remixes and a b-side on their singles. Unfortunatly it cost like $7.00 here. No thanks. Radiohead, Depeche Mode, and Coldplay seem to have the right idea. Cheap singles (no more than $3.99 that ive seen) an alternate version of the song perhaps and a b-side. I wind up getting them and I enjoy them.
New Order could cut down on the remixes for sure. That would lower the price and keep it within' the group.
Maybe we can organize a campaign around the world in which each person here calls in to their local radio stations to play the new New Order single whenever it comes out. I'll surely buy a few copies of the single here just to bolster the single sales numbers.

I think we've racked up about 40 plays of TF since the start of the summer, including two in one day on 2FM.

In the USA the official downloading of songs has just become elegible for gold & platnium status. Next it will probably be reflected in the charts as well. Hence the crackdown of illegal downloads.

That would be a better situation. That tends to suggest people will be anxious for the album or next single.
I still think economics (pricing, tidied tracklist, promotion, good video) will help a lot.

The old git on TodayFM (its not Gogan, is it?) is a pushover when it comes to True Faith, he loves it. I'm working on Q102 today (off sick, nothing better to do) to get them to play it.
Liam Coburn is on air now, and he's a likely candidate to play True Faith
It has to be True Faith, as thats the entire point - we're trying to get it played as often as possible...
I guess the problem is now that ablums are so cheap it dosn't make sense to buy a single often costing £4. Also singles are cheaper to buy in the first week before they chart so this why singles only ever seem to climb down the charts these days.
I don't think really think the singles chart means anything anymore, its much better to have an album in the top ten.
Albums still tend to bounce around the charts like singles used to.
