Boring collector question, but was the original inner sleeve silver, black or other? I've noticed copies with silver or black on ebay. I know the record went through various designs, each one getting simpler to manufacture due to the cost.
What colour was the original inner sleeve for Blue Monday?

I think the original was supposed to be black, so it had the same look as the standard floppy.
I have 3 copies of the Original BM, 2 have Black Inners and one is Silver. Maybe they ran out of Black:D
I've got the black one and the silver. I too bought it in a loacl independent shop on release day - and that was the black version. Perhaqps it was just luck of the draw...
My guess is that it was first released with either silver or black, but it's only a guess. I wonder if Peter Saville ever reads these forums?

So, was it two different inners when it was released then johnny? You older one's have better memories![]()
I thought it was BLACK but was told it was SILVER.But maybe BOTH.To this day i have not owned a SILVER one but at least every cloud as...... ROCKET MICK Ps what colours did FAC 53 come in?
I must admit I don't recall seeing black ones on release day, maybe there were some in other parts of the country? I would guess that silver is most likely to be the initial batch as it would be more expensive to print than black (silver costs more - don't ask me why), so changing to black is the first money saving concession, then losing the holes in the centre of the sleeve along with the black inner (paper sleeve from then on), then the cutout along the edge.

Black, red, blue, brown, yellow, orange, green, aqua and purple. All depicted over at the New Order Discography. Add to that the black & white Italy release, and the light blue & dark blue New Zealand one.
BTW: Anyone has a spare purple to complete my set?

So it's looking likely the original pressing came with silver inner. http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/index.html tells you which pressing has which groove notation, so you can tell from that. If any of you fellas have silver AND black copies, you can confirm which is which pressing from this:
Groove notation: 12" [A]: "Out Voted!" : "Ho El & Tel!" 12" UK 2nd pressing [A]: "The Robot" : "The Robot" 12" UK 3rd pressing [A]: "Where's Murder?" : "I Said Where's Murder?"
Now, just to confuse the shit out of everyone, I've seen a copy with a black inner with the first pressing's notations on the record.
Think I might go and lie down in a quiet dark room...
Thanks for the headache Jim! My silver inner and one of my black ones BOTH have the '1st pressing' run off notation...

This is mental. How about this for the latest theory: So many '000s of the record were initially pressed and Factory ran out of silver inner sleeves, so went for black probably due to cost issues? Therefore either silver or black inners are first pressings, but if you want to be specific about it, the silver ones were the very first to hit the shops.
No doubt some smart-arse will clear this up eventually, but I reckon that'll do for now. ![]()
Chris mentions in an earlier post that he bought a black one on release day, so I reckon both black and silver came out on the first day, silver probably more common. Where's Tony Wilson when you need him, he'd know!
Btw, cheers everyone for this, I'm new to the forum pages, and it's been well worth posting the question up.
