This might not be the trendiest subject to bring up amidst the fanfare of Crystal and the expectant Get Ready but, erm, 1963 (outrageous cheers heard throughout the land).... anyone got any fucking clue what Bernard is gassing about?

It just crossed my mind that I wouldn't mind knowing, I put it on the other day and it brought my lat cat to tears.

I'm not really sure what "gassing" means, but I'm going to take a flyer and assume that you want to know what the song is about (you have to forgive us Fooking ignorant Americans!!!) When they were here in 93...Barney said that the song was for John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated (in Dallas no less) in November of 1963. I can't guarantee this, but hey, I got my story from the horses mouth!!!

Didn't Bernard say in the recent webcast something along the lines of it, "being sung from the perspective of an unfaithful wife talking to her gun toting husband?" Classic tune though.

1963 is the most beutiful New Order track. a lot of people want to know about 1963, still Last July, on Getmusic Chat Bernard was asked about 1963. Then he revealed the story of 1963. It's about one guy shoot his wife who cheated on him. And he said it's a fictitios story.

But I can not sure that what I heard is exactly correct. Coz my English is not perfect enough.(English is not my mother tongue). You can download the mp3 file of whole interview from this site and confirm the truth on your ear.

In the songbook "New Order Music 1981-1989", Bernard reveals a funny story about the meaning of that song, involving Marylin Monroe, JFK, and Mrs. K.

If my Songbook hadn't been in the hands of Nicolas LeBlanc (Nick The Blank) for the past 10 months, I would have transcribed exactly what Bernard wrote, but I guess I'm gonna have to leave that to someone else until I sue Nicolas in order to get that back! :D

There is a silly conspiracy theory that JFK might have hired a gunman to kill his wife because he wanted her gone so he could pursue his affair with Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately (so the theory goes), the gunman screwed up and killed JFK instead. The song may be about the scenario that would have been had things gone according to the plan... Or something like that.

I believe that I heard in an interview from muchmusic or whomever during the Area One concert (which was absolutely funny when Barney put the guy on hold for call waiting:laugh: ) Anyway, I think I heard him say that it was just a song about a guy that killed his wife...

By the way, the guy that conducted that interview sucked..he sounded like he didn't really care...

That was the GetMusic interview, and yes Bernard said that, but still.. I guess we should skip this question in the questions we'll ask the band.

It's a parable on the JFK story which has the man himself pointing the gun at his wife i.e. "Johnny don't point that gun at me". Well, that's my tuppence worth.

What a song anyway, the best B-side ever. How it wasn't a single is beyond me.

Now, as for the Arthur Baker remixed 1995 single............
