New Order & Joy Division Fans!
Please support the comeback of 'The House of Love' who are returning with a new album 'Days Run Away' which is to be released on February 28th 2005. Mercurial guitarist Terry Bickers returns as a full band member. I know you all have a fantastic taste in music so I think you will love this music very much!
OH MY GOD! .The House Of Love are releasing a new album??!!!.Im pissed tonight after an afternoon at the Indian club but am i really reading that the House have done a new album??.Jesus they are one of my alltime favourite bands.That album from 1990 (the Butterfly cover which i cant remember if was called Fontana or House Of Love) was on my turntable for years!!!.Hedonist ,Skake And Crawl,Never,Someone`s Got To Love You,Blind,32nd Floor...Such a completely awesome album!!.
So already in 2005 there is albums coming from New Order,Doves and now House Of Love.Busy.
I was lucky enough to meet them in about 93 when they they were rehearsing and decided to come and listen to my band (because we were so loud apparently) who was also rehearsing at the time in Herne Hill, next door to where we were. V nice guys.

I guess this is sort of "on topic" as Terry Bickers played on Astrid Williamson's Astrid album and she provided backing vocals on Electronic's Twisted Tenderness...
I remember being blown away at Reading '89 when the House of Love played the opening chords to "Love In A Car" - great band.

Just a quick note - 'Fontana' was the record label...
House Of Love started on Creation records in the mid 80's - my favourites were and still are 'Shine On' ( which I played to death to promote them in the record store) and 'Christine'.
Tim sent me a cracking compilation with some of their best stuff, Brassneck, Shine On and Christine are the current faves!

Terry Bickers could not possibly be any more of a loon than he was first time around. Even after HoL signed with Fontana and got a £400k advance he remained in his Camberwell squat.
Bickers, was fired by the band mid-tour, they threw him out of the van at a service station in South Wales cos they couldn't take any more of his loon behaviour.
If that's most peoples favourite HoL story, my second favourite is......
When the HoL fortunes started to dip, around 1991, and Bickers had started up his own band 'Levitation', the HoL were under a lot of pressure from Fontana to deliver a commercially successful album. All their demos for their second Fontana album were thrown back at them and deemed not good enough. When the album was ready, singer and leader Guy Chadwick begged Danny Kelly, the editor of the NME and a big HoL fan - to put them on the front cover of the NME again, they badly needed the promotion. By this time HoL were going out of favour with the music weeklys and Chadwick said he'd do ANYTHING to be on the cover...pose nude, in a Nazi uniform etc. Kelly granted his request to be on the cover, the photo would be of Chadwick and Bickers stood back to back with dueling pistols. Chadwick..."er, anything but that". The HoL were never on the cover of NME again.

Couple of HOL anecdotes of my own - a gig at Keele Uni in 1989 that I was one of the promoters for. Guy decided to play a trick on Terry by changing the setlist after it had been drawn up. Pete and Chris both had a revised set, Terry was left with the original. When Guy began the opener "Fisherman's Tale", Terry looked absolutely gobsmacked, picked up his set, went over and picked up Guy's set, then went across to Chris's......blinding show nonetheless, and I'm glad it didn't open with "Sulphur" after all :) I have both setlists in my possession to this day!
Also, after they signed to Creation, Alan McGee wanted something typically uptempo for waving under the public nose after "Christine". Guy's initial offering was a limp ballad called "Destroy The Heart". It was rejected as being shite. Next rehearsal, Terry blew the whole song to pieces by playing it 10x speed and adding a killer riff. It sold.
Interesting interview on that site listed above with the Fontana boss, saying how unsatisfactory the whole HOL thing became. I have a bootleg copy of the album that never was (most of which ended up on The Spy In The House Of Love), will see if I can dig it out if anyone is interested. Can't wait to see them again (provided they'd forgotten all the Audience With The Mind and Babe Rainbow shite).

Cannot stand it! They'd well and truly lost the plot by that stage, to me at least. Old Chadders had fewer songs up his sleeve than Cobain, look at how many songs got recycled and included on consecutive albums even.

the original drummer is in the reformed line up too. great story re destroy the heart - the one that broke them for me, though christine still makes hairs stand up on the back of me neck.
Good news indeed. They really did fall out of favour quickly though. I saw them at Glasgow Tech (capacity 1800) in 1990 and then in King Tut's (capacity 200) in '91!
Far more excited about Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler back writing again though. Gonna be awesome.
That BUTTERFLY album was fanatatic.Every song perfect.Difficult to match that.I got into it a while after it came out and was shocked and gutted to find out they had played my home town Rugby on the tour but wasnt really aware of them at the time.And for ANY band even of minor succes to play in Rugby is a very very rare if non existent occurance!!!.In fact i think theyre the only band to have played in Rugby in the last twenty years.
I think Guy Chadwick was originally from Rugby or lived here for a while but he said once in an interview that he had to move because it was shit.Yep , can`t disagree with him there!.

Now that is a good song. Too many of his slow ones are painfully twee though, to the extent of being excruciating.
I first bought the BUTTERFLY album and absolutely loved it...and back tracked & bought the Creation Self-titled CD.....but I kinda lost interest after BABE RAINBOW, in fact I dont even think I've listened to it in full eventhough its been sitting on my Cd shelf for like more than 10 years!
Christine did get club play here in the late '80's.Remember that song well,didn't know who did it.Thought maybe from a movie?
