I don't know what's your job Steve, but mine is part web-programmer, and I can assure you that the worst part of it is to support all damned browsers.

From a programmer's point of view, Microsoft's domination is the best thing that could have happened, although the rest best thing would be that everybody follows the damned standard and don't make their own.

Get Microsoft to follow the standards first (PNG-RGBA, real CSS, etc) and then maybe we'll listen. IE is not a standards compliant web browser. Mozilla is. Opera is. Konqueror almost is.

Also, remember who made most of the standards. Who wrote the first browser with image tag support? Marc Andressen, who founded Netscape.

Who developed the first browser with tables, frames, javascript, etc - Netscape.

IE is a late coming, badly written cloner job. IIS is a bad clone of the NSCA's web server, which morphed into Apache. ASP is a poor knock off of PHP.

When developing a site, I develop it for the Presto (Opera, Dreamweaver) rendering engine (if in work) or Gecko (if at home). They work pretty similarly, so theres rarely any changes needed to fix anything either breaks. Then I make sure thats nothings different in Gecko 1.7.3 and 1.7.5 (Mozilla/Camino vs. Firefox). Then I make sure Konqueror/Safari can render it, which is often can't properly. Then I check it degrades properly in NetPositive (graphical browser with no CSS or Javascript) and Links (text browser). Then I check it does small screen rendering right, in NetFront, Opera for Symbian and Konqi. Then and only then do I bother to see does Trident (IE5 and 6) render it right - the browser that the most stupid 85% of the web use doesn't interest me - its not going to like CSS2, DOM, etc anyway - any modern STANDARDS.

I've long since given up caring about checking in Tasman (IE for the Mac).

Oh, and this site generates FIFTY EIGHT errors when validated, showing that your own standards compliance is almost as bad as Microsofts, Nick.

Now now, don't be nasty to Spotty, this site works pretty damned well in all browsers. When I write a web page, I check it in Opera and the W3C's validator page. If it works there, everything else is someone else's problem.....unless MS want to say that IE is right and the W3C is wrong ( wouldn't surprise me). It's all about standards, and owning them. If MS can't own something they "embrace and extend" ( translated as "steal and break") it.

My job is Tech support and Customer service, my CALLING is a musician, and we value standards in music.....concert A is always 440Hz, not 442.674Hz just cos of a bug in Kern32.dll :) Imagine the music tech industry....imagine there was Midi, and MS-Midi. All of New Order's gear would be useless for not being MS-Midi, for having the real standard, but not being any use in the MS-ruined world.

IE is a puss filled sack of pain on the arse of humanity. If it wasn't welded into windows, and you had to choose your browser, no bugger would use it. It has more security holes than a swiss cheese that's been used to test shotguns, more bugs than Britney's knickers and because it's so heavily integrated into DOS, one wont break without taking the other along......Some ppl have had to reinstall windows just cos IE would decide not to open a certain site without crashing anymore, just DECIDE, on it's own, no external stimulous.....gotta love it. I'm an Opera man myself, the speed is just blissful ( often wonder what's wrong when using IE on someone else's box .."C'mon C'mon". Love the multi tab interface, and could not live without mouse gestures and especially the full page zooming. I'm trying to migrate to mozilla firefox right now, but it's just taking me a while to train it to "be" opera...I have everything except the full page zoomer ( though it can zoom text internally and can be easily extended to zoom pictures, it's not QUITE the same yet). The only other thing is that if you kill Opera rather than exit nicely, it remembers all the pages you had open, Firefox doesn't which is a shame, cos I like to grow my browser sessions over many weeks, and even my linux box needs a reboot once in a while ( usually about 30 secsonds after the phrase "I wonder what would happen if......" passes my lips). I don't do Macs on the grounds that I kinda like fiddling with computers, and Macs let it be known that you're not at ALL welcome inside their heads. Even LoseDos offers some sort of progression from idiot user mode to "advanced blackbelt l33t winhacker", but with the Macs I've used it's either point and drool, or advanced electronic neurosurgery, no middle ground. Having said that, if I were building a proper studio and had proper money, I'd buy a Mac, cos you can come in at 9AM ( LOL yeah right) and turn it on, work with it for 18 hrs, then go home, no pissing about.

Anyway, Spotnick, these days this site renders a treat in everything, except old versions of IE oddly enough....so you must be doing something right :) But you need to THINK New Order.......don't pander to the supidities of Macroshaft just cos they are popular....do it the right way......if you have to conform to standards, at least let them be the actual standards not one company's market leveraged bastardization thereof. This is your medium mate, your artform , do you want to see it "newspeaked" and limited and owned by a company who have proved that their greed is matched only by their incompetance. Write your code so it checks out in the W3C validator and THEN in IE, and others. That way if the browser has a problem you know it's IT'S problem. Opera is a good sitechecker in itself ( though it does get a bit funny about javascript buttons for some reason), in the past any site that went wrong in Opera, I took the URL to the validator and ALWAYS got a result like " Look mate I can't validate this page because it's so mangled I can't even tell what standard I'm meant to be checking".

Apologies for extended ranting, but in the past companies have set up standards and it's all worked out well ( Phillips:CD for instance) but in the case the standards were already there and in operation perfectly happily before Mr Gates even knew what the net was ( read MS original "vision" for win95...the word internet does not appear).....and now he is trying to co-opt them to his own ends, to shut out and marginalize those of us who choose not to use DOS. A prime example would be the UK Govt. and it's online services gateway, which originally rejected all non IE browsers, out of hand, no arguing, no browser ID faking ( it tested for your IE-ness not by asking the browser, but by running some weird IE-only command ), just "clear off and come back with IE you pleb!" When they were cornered about this, they said it was to do with IE having especially wonderful xhtml supprt, much better than mozilla or Opera. So "theregister" ( the site I read this on) phone opera and put this to the CEO, who says..."That's really funny, cos I've got this certificate on the wall from the W3C saying Opera has the best xhtml support they've seen". And when they site was validated, the validator fell over laughing. It was fixed in the end, but it wa a very low attempt, to essentially close all open source users and even windows users who make different choices, out of all UK Govt info....scarey......"You must own windows to be a citizen"????
