NewOrder have a fantastic back catalogue of album sleeve graphics, promo videos, and general visual identity. Other groups in a similar position have utilised this visual identity as part of a full-on audiovisual show (e.g. Kraftwerk) – would you like to see NewOrders next tour be an arty video projecting affair, complete with Saville graphics, video art, and promo clips – or would you prefer it to be a straight ahead Rock Gig. (note: this is not at all a question relating to the standard of NewOrders musical performance)

Can't imagine it, it's never been their style, and I can't see 'em bothering with something like that. Let's face it, they can't even be arsed to learn how to play the songs, let alone some fancy video thing to accompany them!

No just keep it SIMPLE as possible. If i want a SHOW i go and see ALICE COOPER.Now that's entertainment!

Same here, I still can't get used to the flashing lights and smoke effects.

they should play on the floor, like Lightning Bolt.

Maybe they'll use the new AutoCue 3000, who knows...

That's audiovisual... and most fan would like to actually SEE this autocue to know the real lyrics of the songs ;)

Or ask Peter Saville to art direct the show, so he'll come with a concept after the tour is over

I remember an Artist called David Ballans was approached in late summer 1987 , he was asked to provide some ideas and costings for the December Wembley gig . It was in all likelihood The Good Doctor Alan Wise who thought it up , or broached the subject . Dave Ballans had designed a cover for Nico , who Alan Wise was probably managing , certainly promoting at that time , Dave was looking to break into tour production design and had already got the job of designing the look of the Fall/Pete Shelley/JC Clarke gig at Salford Uni's Maxwell hall for that coming November , using the 100 year anniversary of LS Lowry as a reference point ( which I think ME Smith had pitched as an idea ). Anyway Dave did a lot of preliminary work and looked at the practicalities and logistics of video projection with Dani Jacobs ( who did the Hac's video projections and now does videos for the Corrs via his production co ) , the Fall stuff went down well , but nothing ever really progressed with Factory despite some well placed people vouchsafing the idea , anyway it fizzled out ... for myself though , I'm happy with a bit of dry ice and a varilite or two . And if you want cheap yet bloody effective , then Ian Mac's Candleland tour is the way to do it , backlit , dry ice and a bit of strobe now and then

I'd quite like a Peter Saville-esq audiovisual background - might delay any gigs until 2006, but at least there would be something else to look at while Barney trys out his Dad-Dance.

Part of the near-religious experience (see, it's not just Barney!) that was a New Order gig in the 80s was the final few seconds just before they arrived on stage, when that eerie Dr.Who-esque blue light swamped proceedings. That blue light cannot be beaten for evoking the magic of the moment - even if the gig ended up shite, the atmosphere generated by that blue light was always special. Those who didn't get to see the band around this time won't appreciate what I'm on about, smallish club venue, crowd packed in, up with the blue light......fabulous. Feeling all nostalgic now!

yep I remember that. simple and perfect. And then there was the fighting and spitting.

I try to tell people about knob heads spitting at bands and they cant believe it happened. F'in stupid thing to do if you ask me.

A nice big fuck-off laser would be nice (memories of Ceremony at Reading 89).

I can just picture New Order trying to 'synchronise' each track with a movie backdrop a la Kraftwerk. They wouldn't last one track!

Good call on the Candleland shows. I saw the tour when he played in San Francisco and the atmosphere was excellent.

He covered Ceremony that night. Was it a staple of his live set on that tour?

One of the reasons I love New Order is that they don't spend millions on lights to try and cover for the lack of interest in their music, they don't need to. " red lights and 2 blue lights is enough if you want to hear music, and if it's colours and lights you want, either see The Orb instead or just sit home and neck 300 mushrooms.

I know you didn;t say they SHOULD do this, but........ "New Order need a big cool stages show" equals "Wouldnt it b great it if NO were more like Britney"

Very evocative Oldmonkey - I remember it well! I doubt we will ever see it again.

Did you see them in 1993? The highlight(?) of those shows were the spectacular lighting rig incorporated into the performance. The setlist didn't vary much due to their lack of interest and, in a small way, the sophisticated light show accompanying the songs. I saw them in Mountain View and 2 days later in Hollywood and it was practically an identical performance (other than Hooky being more drunk in Hollywood). 1993 was definitely the nadir of their live career.

I dont think there is a distinction between good music and good show.

I was thinking more Kraftwerk(or dare I say it, Depeche Mode) than Britney.

The technology is there; the back catalogue is there; the tunes are there; even so, I think the next tour (if we get one) will centre around doing as little work as possible to shift as many units as possible to as wide an audience as possible. Unlike KW (who mainly played good, medium size venues), I don't think NewOrder give much of a toss about putting on a good show anymore - I hope im wrong though.

By the sound of PFD video, Barney doesn't like bright lights. "turn that light off you cunt"

piss myself every time:rofl:
