2 questions about this beast of a song:
(1) On that brilliant BBC 6music NO documentary, one of the talking heads claimed that TPK is all about HIV/AIDS. Does anyone else have any ideas/opinions about this, as I can't really see the connection myself...
(2) I laughed my head off when I read on here about the first time was played, with it's ahem, playful lyrics. Is there by any chance a specific bootleg to look for that contains this song, or should I just imagine it?! Many thanks

I had a feeling I might get one or two "have you actually listened to the song?" replies...I just thought some of the lines were a bit too vague. The "kiss of death" line was quoted in the documentary, as was "pretending not to see his gun...". Some of them do fit, but I guess with a lot of NO lyrics, they can be interpreted in many ways..
That is crazy... never heard that before. I really like hearing the demo versions of these songs and that New Order actually played out these songs live without even finishing the song. That took a lot of guts to do, especially to just throw out random lyrics like that. It's difficult to think of a band nowadays that would take such a chance these days.

Wang, It's too fooking bad that it'll never happen again. TPK was cooked up during the spring and summer of 84. Some extremely precious one time airings of this song. But if you look into the history of the band and find some bootlegs you will see that almost everything prior to Brotherhood and Technique were developed as they played live. Just like small time bands. Develop the live set then record the lp. Big time bands are not afforded that luxury--venues too large, balls too small. Get the 3 16 dvd and watch Temptation and you can almost see the birth of a song. Music first then the lyrics.

I like the different instrumentation in M1. I might fit that into my version eventually. I'm also fitting the alternate lyrics into my version of Crystal.
the bass is much slower on the M1 and for a few performances afterwards. The sequencer is different too. And the stupid sounding clap track is missing. personally, I like the one-off lyrics the best.
I really fookin love this version...lyrics are brilliant, I like the subtle echo effects. The instrumental break in the middle is done better too (no "Frog" solo on the Emulator), the sequencer line is fantastic, too bad Steve didn't keep it (Barney didn't like it/overpowered his guitar/vocals?). My God to be there....this followed by Decades....oh to be so young and so American

Makes one wonder... would the band have performed their new songs in such early stages of their development with the internet around? Back in those days, gigs were basically one-off happenings with only a number of tape-swapping punters who circulated their precious recordings in a more or less closed circuit. Nowadays, almost any gig by a band with a strong fanbase on the net, immediately gets into world-wide circulation. Methinks that's quite an inhibiting, if not intimidating, thought for many people in a band.
Which, in all fairness, detracts nothing from the band's sense of adventure and openness: even in those days, there weren't many bands around who dared to experiment in front of their fans, and challenged them the way JD/NO did!

Well I don't have the equipment / technical ability to correct any issues with the tape, but I'll happily hand it over to you to have a go...
I've heard a couple of different sourced recordings, one was absolutely horrible and the other OK, but I prefer mine. I believe my tape must have been done by Jon Marsh or an associate, because you can clearly hear him say "Temptation coming up..." after EGG.
Like I say, if you want the tape, it's yours. I'd love a better transfer than the one I've got, as it's probably my favourite gig.

You're right, of course. I remember him discussing it on these very pages. 'twas he that divulged the Jon Marsh connection.
It certainly is, and very fine it is too. I slowed it down a touch, it's by far the best of all the different sources of this legendary gig that I've heard. Better than our effort, that's for sure.

Maybe the internet prevents bands from experimenting like NO did back then. I always thought its was gigs viewed as practices that made NO test new songs. Even on 5 11 Barney said they were happy to play a new song (Brutal).

If my mind serves me right 1984 was a couple of years or so before aids became a big public issue.
AIDS apparently was "discovered" around 1980, as a large number of gay men were dying from an unknown (at that time) disease in San Francisco. Who knows how long it took to become an epidemic or for the medical community to recognize the virus, since it can take up to seven years for any symptoms to show up. As a public health issue it became well known around 1982.
My mother works in the medical community on the west coast of the US and AIDS babies were an issue that she briefly dealt with while working in a hospital.
