Anyone know what this song is about? Barney's older brother, perhaps. i've always loved this track and also felt this was New Order's most melancholic song .

Been done to death, that seems the only logical explanation. However, Jackie's birthday isn't in January, but we can overlook that for the moment...

Heard the JFK theory before,but it doesnt sit well with me,in the lyrics it was Johnny pointing the gun-not someone pointing it at him. In fact the whole JFK connection seems to stem from the year and the name,which at best is pretty weak.

The comments about 1963 and JFK was just Barney talking generally about the year 1963, and JFK, not the song. There was an online streamed interview at the time Get Ready was released (an interview from GetMusic. To hear the interview just follow this link http://www.getmusic.com/calendar/audiochats/neworder/index.html and click on Hear The Chat Now) and a fan emailed in the question about the lyrics to 1963, and Barney just said it's a song from the point of view of a wife, being shot by her partner Johnny, then him going on to get another wife. The interviewer was a complete twat. Barney explained "1963" lyrics, saying that is a fictitious story about a man who kills his wife and the guy went "It sounds like an Eminem track to me". Really embarrassing.

The description he gives in that book doesn't marry up with the lyrics, as that would mean JFK shooting his missus, then remarrying, wouldn't it?

Hope that clears it all up, once and for all - although I'm sure someone else will be posting this question again in the near future!

Is Johhny a womanizing assasin who torments the first person narrator, whoever that is or I am reading too much into this song. I once read somewhere that Bernard's songwriting is mostly rubbish. Whether or not that's a moot point to this, i don't know.

I think that Bakers 1963 mix is fantastic and I love the Perfecto Mix of "World"

The versions I have are: the original 12" B-side(87), also on 2CD Substance 1987; 1963-95(Arthur Baker video edit, booted off a New Order special on "Rage") & a crap Gino T. Vanelli remix on a Hacienda dancemix double-CD on London(Which I picked up in Reading while in the UK in 1995). The original is still the best, though the AB edit isn't too bad. In terms of Perfecto remixes, the best one they've done 4 NO is True Faith 94, which is mucho supremo 2 to the job they did on World.
