New Order Fashion

This is a somewhat trivial topic, but something I have always been curious about.

I think New Order have sort of an interesting fashion sense. At least they used to, back in the 80s. Hooky seemed to really be into tight leather pants and t shirts (and zippered sweatpants in PFD).

I see all the pics of Barney, and he seems to favor crisp white button up shirts with hooded jackets, white t shirt and white pants, and Fred Perry shirts (again, in PFD).

Im just curious, in the UK, was the way NO and Barney in particular indicative of any UK fashion trend? Did people ever dress similar to barney, liek folks did with Martin Gore and Fat Bobn? Admittedly, Barney is more sublte than them.

I have just always found the Orders fashion choices (and sometimes lack there of) interesting.

To my mind, their total lack of elegance in clothing themselves is quite charming.

I always think “the Bernard” haircut is due a fashion comeback sometime soon – its really unique, and fits some heads well. The only time the band were in any way interesting fashion wise was as Joy Division, a sort of 1940s aesthetic for post punks. After that it seems they lost any interest in cloths (as most people do once they hit 25) and just grew up!

Lookin at the new photo,it seems distressed jeans retro adidas and funnel neck jackets are popular.

Some of us (not mentioning any names Al) used to wear whatever they did! I distinctly recall the Festival Hall gig in 1984 - half the audience turned up in leather jackets because Hooky had worn one on TOTP for Thieves Like Us! I will readily admit to wearing a trenchcoat at some of the earlier gigs (having bought it, I had to get me money's worth!!!), most of the UK hardcore have had the Barney cut a few times (some ain't grown out of it eh Mike?), and I've seen a few "Kill 'Em All" t-shirts at gigs. More disturbing was the growth in hooded jackets amongst NO fans following the Later with Jools Holland appearance.

Barney used to follow the skinhead fashions of the day in his early teens and was notably impressed when a friend of mine was wearing a pair of 'Stones'.

Id love to meet "the hardcore" at a UK gig, heres hoping there will be some after my exams in may (kids today, eh)
