A very nice perfectly poppy album opener. Now if there are some darker dancier tracks, then the album should be perfect.

Absolutely love it - I am seriously, seriously excited about the album now (especially the title track, after what Bernard said in the press release!)

Already love Krafty so much more than Crystal (am I the only one who thinks that Crystal was pretty average?) Just can't wait until it's in the shops - really hopeful that the extra track will be another new song.

i love the instrumental bit near the end, before the last round of chorus' come back in...that wobbly noise, hookys bass, the drums...then bernard manages not to ruin it...perfect.

I am sat here with this big smile on my face for two reasons:

1. I am listening to Krafty, and it is what I had hoped it would be. All the classic New Order ingredients here, some true Hooky bass (one or two of the riffs seem a bit familiar ;)) and dodgy lyrics.

2. I have managed to agree with Brian on something for the first time since he admitted to being a twat!

After listening to this a few times I can say that this song is awsome. With most songs it takes me a long to get to like, but this, I just love it. It's a really happy tune, with such a great chorus.

That subtle synth, HOOKY, I LOVE that beat...haha, I know what you are all talking about with that wobbly electronic noise, that next synth line is SO vintage!! BASS SEQUENCER?! That finish...wow. Simply wow.

Better than Chrismas as a kid, this - what a great way to wake up on a saturday morning and have this waitng to be heard. 9/10 after 3 listens to a muddy, 30-second clip. Better than free beer! CTB

My verdict after hearing the full song:

A little disappointing after Here to Stay. A bit too sugary for my taste, but still a decent pop song. Very catchy, but it could've been a bit more melancholy. Then again, Low-Life and Movement are my fave albums, so there you go.

The sequencer line reminds me of the sequencer line in a Trent Reznor song from the Lost Highway soundtrack. If anyone has that, tell me I'm wrong. The strings sound like something from Republic, like Ruined in a Day.

Here's something: is it just me or are the lyrics just a less selfish version of Turn My Way? Imagine Baldy Corgan doing the backing vocal track and see what I mean.

i think it's good. definitely began to get tingles when the wobbly bits kicked in. Thank the lord they have got some synthesiers back in their mix. it's a great sugery confection of a pop song. roll on March for the album.

Heard the track on the BBC Website and thought it was good, but when I heard a "clearer" version on this website (the 30 sec promo), thought it had WAY more punch.

Very pleased. Very catchy. Even after three listens only.

i've been waiting for so long to hear this song. i liked it but its a mix of paradise (brotherhood) / As It Is When It Was (brotherhood) en the lyrics are a bit like flicker (electronic / twisted tenderness).

If the hole album sounds like this i'm very pleased its better then get ready.

krafty reminded me of weirdo, as well--reminiscent of the sound of the mid-80s. catchy chorus, hooky sounds great (hearing the bass first thing was such a treat!). classic NO!

Unfortunately i tend to agree with your sentiments. First thing i thought when i heard it on Tong last night was Such a Good Thing's younger brother. Musically it's got all the elements we adore but the tune is pretty bland for a comeback single. Virgin Radio will champion it up but Radio 1 i feel will again blank it for the top playlists. Crystal and Regret grabbed me by me the B******s but can not say the same thing here. Well maybe it's just another "throw away" pop single like World was and the Album is full of little gems. Here's hoping!

i don't really hear the connection with such a good thing-- except for the layering/echoing of barney's voice.

Krafty sounds very catchy indeed!!! But why is everybody suddenly going "great, it sounds like 'weirdo' and 'as it is when it was'? I thought we all kind of agreed that Brotherhood is New Order's least interesting album?! If I could swop 'Crystal' for anything on Brotherhood (except for the sleeve-art!) I'd do it right away! So stop whining and start enjoying!!! :)

My first impression also, certainly a SAGT sound-alikee, also has that keyboard tinkling melody 3rd generation LWTUA. Not a classic first single (crystal, regret) but all the ingredients are there - shite mix though.

I think it's a very good song though not as punchy as 'Crystal' or 'Regret'. But it doesn't sound like any of those 80's bands returns at all. It sounds very modern.

The middle synth track reminds me a bit 'Radio Ga-Ga' (the Queen homage to Kraftwerk).

I think that this album could be The Album of the Year and one their best ever.

I loved the intro - bass sequencer & Hooky's bass - sounded very menacing until the Barney starts then it gets a bit sugary. Many NO songs start full of promise then turn abruptly (Face up?). As someone else also said, my favourite albums also happen to be the first 3 and they are sooo hard to follow.

Having said that, I like it, and it is a grower as is much of their output. I kinda thought it would be dancier, perhaps along the lines of 'Here to Stay' (which I thought was a better song). Much prefered Barney's vocal style in crtstal too, a bit 'heavier' and less fluffy.

But it's New Order, it's great and i can't wait till the album arrives and the tour gets going!

"Interesting" is an interesting thing to say, if you'll pardon the obvious. They are all interesting in their own way, and Brotherhood is probably the most disappointing in terms of production. Then again, the same could be argued of Movement, and Low Life has some savagely amateur editing on it.

Never judge a movie by it's special effects- it's the strory and the acting that really counts! It's the same with albums. Although I have to agree with Old Monkey that the production on Brotherhood was very poor, the album mainly sounds so flat because most of the songs sound very uninspired! The same with Republic which was very well produced but also wasn't a great album. My favourites are Low Life, Technique and Get Ready simply because they contain the best songs and best ideas! Maybe Low Life illustrates my opninion the best: it contains some really lame vocals but hey who cares, it's still one of thes best albums ever made!!! ;)

Someone might have already said this, but this song "Krafty" sounds a lot like "Way of Life." It seemed a little bland to me at first, but then I have a short attention span--I was thoroughly satisfied after I heard the entire thing.

A couple of guys said it already, but its style reminds of Weirdo and Brotherhood in general. I guess it would be too much to ask for something totally new at their age and while much younger fellas fail at that as well (and usually copy NO;) ). So, 8/10 for me AKA very descent (9,5 out of 10 at its production btw ). Cant wait for the album :) .

i think it sounds a lot like "way of life" off Brotherhood

I've listened to Krafty 2 times already and getting ready to listen again. I've been anxiously waiting for this new album since I heard they were in the studio. The music and lyrics seem to be classic New Order, wow I don't know what to say except another Masterpiece!

A side note, The Real Thing by Gwen Stefani with help from Hooky and Bernard is a great song musically. I bought the record just for that one song.

Errr, didn't mean to tantalize you Nick, but it was almost 70 F yesterday, a very very rare occurence I can tell you. Just got done watching the Weather Channel and the blizzard that's hitting the east side.

I think it it great song!

As soon as I heard it, at the opening riff, I knew it was New Order. And that isn't a bad thing. I love the fact that they went back to the Technique style of mixing a big of rock with electronic elements.

They said the album is a mix, and I liked Crystal, but it was too much rock for me. This is more the way I think most people expect New Order to sound, except their sound is updated. It is an awesome comeback song.

With all the Brotherhood comparisons, one doesn't have to go that far back for the closest soundalike.

Has anybody else noticed that this is reminiscent of "Under The Stars" by Monaco? (nee "Born To Kill" by Revenge) "Looking at the stars from underneath the tree" being a practical namecheck.

Sing the following along to the chorus and you'll see what I mean:

"Let the violence begin, if we can fight them we can win, let's share the love that's in our hearts and in our souls..."

Whatever its forebears, it's a good tune, I've listened to it eight times and I'm still not sick of it.

Mmmm... as with most all of the post Republic period NO, this one has a lovely intro and verse only to be ruined by a hackneyed, over backing-vocaled chorus... what ever happened to Barney's songwriting abilities? This sort of overdone chorus is like a laugh track in a comedy; it slams you over the head and robs you of the pleasure of the verse... this one is a very ham fisted, flat song indeed... not a hopeful sign for the appalingly titled upcoming record... of course it will probably be number one in a minute or two... ;)

And by the way, didnt this lot have an agreement that if they ever lost a member they would change the band name? By my count they have lost two members (rob and gillian) and gained an uninspiring studio hack... at least call it NewOrderToo you sods!

not sure if its a single to be honest but then i doubt whether they are going for the single market as anyone and his dog can now sell enough singles to get to No.1 in the U.K. Hugely promising if the album's like this My only worry is this could be a typical ploy by the guys in the manner of Regret where the rest of albumn is bobbins.

hello AJW, always a pleasure to read your comments. I don't always agree, but it's not necessary to worship every new song they make.

This song is just average IMHO. It starts quite promising, but the chorus is boring; nothing special. This one is certainly not a new order-classic. Normally the first single of a new album is also the best track of the album. Let's hope the album is much better.

You have a point here.

Indeed Krafty sounds better after a number of listenings : many interesting items in it (intro, break at the end, not-so-bad chorus -bit puffy, though- and a decent tune) but that's a shame they didn't make the best of them.

There's a general lack of breath in this single and it sometimes looks like it was about to undergo an abrupt end.

Hope we'll wonder why they chose "Krafty" as a first single by the end of March...

My initial excitement at hearing a new NO song is tempered by the fact that it's very Middle of the Road NO. A lot of the earlier messages (and one whole thread) have talked about the other NO tracks it sounds likes, as if it's a good thing that it sounds like something they've done before. I don't remember hearing Crystal and thinking that it sounded like something they'd done before. Hopefully there'll be loads of remixes to get into the nuts and bolts of the thing a bit more; get Hooky's bass up high and lose some of those dreadful vocals, "But out there the world is a beautiful place, With mountains, lakes and the human race." Even for Barney this is a new low. I hope the album's got a few more risks and surprises on it than this Retro tosh.

Just heard the full version. Starts off a little slow but the catchiness kicks in and is enjoyable. Memorable? Only time will tell. ;)Can't wait to hear it on CD-quality and on generous repeat. I, too, hope the album has even better tracks. This is poppish and should be radio-friendly, but doesn't quite have the magic that "Crystal" had. Hmm, I should rescind that until I listen it to as many times as I had listened to "Crystal"!

Krafty is pure genious, straight from Technique. If you can't hear Hooky's bass, you must be deaf, it's up in the front. More promising than anything from Get Ready.

I like it allot, sounds something like the old style and very republic as well... I wish it wasnt so far off for the release... :D

Personally i think its great! Poppy, chirpy, touch of 'such a good thing about it', bubbly chorus, uplifting, not an anthem but commercially viable I'd say.

Its not vintage NO by any means but nevertheless im disappointed by people slagging it off as its still got that indefinable quality that only a NO track can possess!

:(...I'm gutted, this single is dreadfull and it kills me to say that. Barneys vocals,lyrics and melodies(lack of) are devoid of any creativity. Stephen's drumming and Hookys base is sadly let down by Barneys efforts I honestly can't believe this has seen the light of day. I was really hoping that after the mediocre Get Ready that the lads would get back on track but this effort does not bode well for another PCL, Lowlives or Brotherhood. I really want NO to return to their former glories and tracks like Crystal and Here to stay show they still have it in them but I for one will not rushing out to buy this record. Somebody should get Barney back ON the Prozac or any substance tested only on animals. Things could only improve!!!!

The dogs bollox! Mr Sumner has been attracting all those telepathical signals from fans again. A very uppy track, sounds somewhere between Brotherhood and Technique. If this is a sign of whats to come, I cant wait. Looking forward to seeing the Video

After 2 days of pulling my remaining hair out I've finally managed to stream the little bastard - FRIGGIN AWESOME!! Absolutely classic New Order, great summer tune with the windows rolled down and the 35 deg sun baking down - yes, I love their darker tunes because I was a Joy Division fan first and foremost, but if this tune doesn't get you up nothing will. Can't wait for the album and to quote a great Australian: C'MON!!

I think this song is a great preview to the new album,it has a lot of energy and real-life lyrics that anyone can relate to!Great sound ,great lyrics basically NEW ORDER

After listening to it a few times I came to the conclusion that Krafty is the worst first single off a New Order record. It sounds like a mellow mediocre Electronic song with some 'Hooky' base added to it. I hope there are more gloomy/hard-core New Order songs on the record (True Faith, Crystal) or some catchy electronic songs (Fine Time, Bizzare Love Triangle), otherwise I might be disappointed with New Order for the first time.

I love it all.....sometimes a n o song will give me that "that's cool" feeling.....sometimes it's a "fuck yea" feeling...and then there's the "shit is it over? more more more...that one should just never end"......like the bassline kicking in under "I guess that's what they all say, just before they fall apart" at the end of Regret....I say this one should just never end.....where's the 24 hour version. DAMN. That's the candy my soul will always crave. Thx again neworder.

Love it! very upbeat and lively! I hope there are a lot more excellent tracks on the upcoming album! Bernard sounds great as usual.....can't wait to pick up the cd this coming march.

The wmg.jp version is a longer (4:31) mix, which I'm guessing is the LP version. It's also *much* better than the single mix, both sound-quality wise (the Realmedia version sounds better than the Windows Media version) and mixwise...the last two minutes of the song are simply CLASS...start with the bells at 2:45, and go from there...

I wish I would have heard this version first.

This message is the only thing I can do with the few minutes of Internet connection I have where I am right now, probably for the entire week. But I had to write because, well, it's hard to admit it after having written Krafty disappointed me... but the track is a bloody grower... Heard it several times on my portable CD player (and for this I have to thank a lot those of you who sent me the MP3, otherwise it wouldn't have happened) and well, it finally all made sense. It's a positive love song, mates. We expected something harder and darker, alright, like Crystal maybe, a song which still had a strong melancholic feeling, and we know how New Order are good at that kind of stuff, while when they tried to do "uppy" stuff, especially with side projects like Electronic (and this song reminds a bit stuff like For You, for example), the results weren't quite as good. But let's forget the expectations, and the comparisons with previous tracks like Way Of Life (and still Krafty now sounds like at least an enhanchement of those tracks)... let's concentrate on the feelings the song gives... I've been listening to Krafty while on train reaching my girlfriend who lives hundreds of miles away. In front me sat a happy beautiful young couple with their newborn baby. It's like in that situation I've been able to feel what I haven't felt when I heard this song for the first time, probably because of the cynicism so common between us. It's called love, as Barney sang 21 years ago... I've felt how this song is uplifting and touching at the same time, and artists who have reached almost their fifties and have found some kind of happiness in their life, they don't have to look like tormented souls anymore and they have the right to do such a song, though it's not what we've been expecting... even the lyrics, if a bit simplistic, don't sound so horrible in this perspective... And what a song mate. Give it a second chance. And a third, a tenth if you need it, but it would be a shame to lose the feeling you can have with Krafty. I love the beginning with the low bass and the synth. The verse is a simple introduction to a chorus which is essentially a winner. This is a track which will be great at concerts, imagine all of us jumping and singing along, just like with Regret. But in this case Krafty is even better, because the chorus is so simple and effective, it almost seems like the classic bands like Oasis have been trying to do with their ridiculous careers... to find something like this, I think we have to get back to The Beatles, only them could write such killer tunes. Once again, New Order are the new wave Beatles. Give me one more day - one more day Give me another night - just another night... Yeah, it's all there for a great tune, even that deep bass supporting the backing vocals, simply wonderful... melody and rhythm, it's all perfect. Supported by a great performance by Steve on the durms, the chorus brings us to a brilliant instumental interlude, with fabulous stuff from bass and then guitar and then directly to the reprise of the chorus. I can't get it out of my head, and I can't get enough of it... this fact could make the success of the single... if people hear it on the radio just once and they like it, it'll stay in their heads, it won't go away and they will want to get the single to hear it again... Just listen once again without prejudice, and you may change your mind just like I did. Krafty is an excellent pop song which (while unpalatable to some Joy Division nostalgics) should make happy New Order fans and conquer the chart masses.

Oh, come on! Krafty is lame-ass New Order - I hate to say.

How could it be described as classic? It's just not even a shadow of the songwriting and arrangement that made them what they are - this is the worst of Monaco, Electronic and The Other Two together - it's just so bad.

I have to wonder about rhose who are actually excited about this release - perhaps it only strengthens the arguement that New Order are now just - MAINSTREAM INDIE CROSSOVER SHIT - perhaps the British REM.

I like your old stuff better than ya new stuff!!!!

It's getting disapponting that the only reason to by recent New Order releases is for the Saville artwork.

I think i`ve got it.KRAFTY IS ACTUALLY SHIT AND YET BRILLIANT AT THE SAME TIME!!!.And only New Order are capable of that!.Shit in the way the lyrics are slightly embarassing and maybe mundane yet at the same time are uplifting and optimistic.

For those people who are actually from Manchester is OldMonkey actually an American version of Victor Meldrew....I feel like apologising for being a Manc with a very old Windows version who was there since the Boardwalk days. I merely asked for a Mp3 version of Krafty....but apparently not allowed as I hadn't posted lots of polls etc. to build up my posts. But of course I didn't realise Confusion was New Order's first ever release unlike my Yank friends.

I just took in Krafty for the first time and it's truly fantastic. Sweet Hooky basslines, synth sweeps, Steven's flawless drumming, obtusely eloquent lyrics in the Barney style and this time a bit of a picker-upper much like 'Player In the League' and 'Here To Stay', the good ol' enigmatic title... everything this New Order fan loves to death. Now only to see what Mr. Saville's cooked up for the packaging.

25 years on and as good as ever- New Order are truly one of England's national treasures. I can't wait for the album.

I heard on the Essential Selection on Friday – a tad disappointing (sorry to say).

It sounds a bit more in the vein of a ‘happy poppy’ song (it reminded me of 60 miles an hour) rather than a shattering, compelling and metallic sound, which is how I like my NO songs. I thought Crystal was a monumental single!

It’s not that bad, but I wouldn’t say it’s their greatest comeback. The other thing I didn’t like is for the first time to me, it seems Barney is doing ‘being a wise old man’ – going on about wars and fighting and how we should look at lakes, trees and human race. It just doesn’t sound a ‘cool’ single to me.

Roll on the album though – I can’t wait.

Please do speak for yourself. The Krafty chorus is one of the catchiest they have come up with in over 2 decades, in my opinion. And I am pretty sure I am neither 4, nor lacking ears.

Well, so far I've heard the full thing about 5 times. The very second it started the first time I just KNEW it was gonna be New Order.

Absolutely fantastic stuff, can't get the chorus out of my head. NO's second number one single? Perhaps, perhaps...

Interesting to read the Brotherhood comparisons, pretty much the same thing struck me too.
