Server Load -- We need to rush things a little.

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

The NewOrderOnline account has been suspended for the last 6 hours due to a "too-heavy" server load.

I guess all the action due to the new album is causing us troubles, hence the server too busy errors AND also the fact that the site is very very slow.

So I have to take drastic decisions very soon, so we'll move to the new (more efficient) forum system by the end of the week-end, even if not quite finished... let's hope it will be ready.

Also, I reduced the size of the main forum page to 25 threads per page instead of 50, and I'll have to analyze what I can do to enhance the performance...

Sorry everybody, but it's either that, or we have to upgrade the package to 4 times the price we're paying right now... and even if I have the deepest respect for the "salvation members" of this site, I'm not sure this can be done.

Or I'll have to find somebody to find revenues for this website...!

Anyways, you'll see some drastic improvements by the end of the week-end. Stay tuned.

One last thing... I had to patch the current forum system with new elements from the new forum system (the only visible one is the "pager")...

So if something doesn't work as it should, please let me know ASAP, either here or via email, I'll fix them asap.

I pasted words into my post - they came out all skewed (dont know if that was me or the system)

Now I can't edit or delete the post.

It's indeed impossible to edit a post.

It should work now.

Anything else let me know!

Can't delete posts, Nico.

eg. My double-up at the end of the "WFTSC cover artwork revealed?" thread.

I believe we're seriously in big trouble, this website has NEVER BEEN SO BUSY.

The forums are indeed the reason why it's so busy, so hence why I'll do intensive work this week-end to light them up...

But right now we're on a pace of 5000 to 8000 visitors daily... I don't have the numbers, but that's huge for a website that is hosted on a server with several websites on.

We might have to go for a semi-dedicated server for the time the album is released, if so, I'll need help to finance the next few months, and help to find ways to put publicity on this website to find other source of revenues for the website.

Sorry, don't want to sound grouchy but it has changed. Try last page on Ask Rocket. You'll end up on the first one.

I'm adding cache to the forum right now, so don't worry if you don't see your new thread right away, it can take up to 1 minute.

Will enhance it, but right now this is the first thing I need to do to avoid doing requests to the database all the time.

Why not have some text Ads?

They are not as annoying as pop-up ads, and everyone can pretty much ignore them? Google Ads?

If the site is getting busy, that is a good thing, and a chance to get some cash/upgrade. Short term, its obviously a headache, but long term a good thing.

First thing is to remove the banners for that ugly Community album, which only takes commercial space for ZERO RETURN.

And then go out on prospection. Easy task.

The Community banner will be removed shortly, as we almost sold out the whole batch!

We can now directly access the last page of a thread, but, from there, not got to another page by clicking on its number.

spotnick: you could save some SERIOUS bandwidth by getting rid of the post counts on each post....

and by limiting those with too many posts to just one post per week....

(joke...)

3,017,630 visitors.

This means that since Friday, same time, there has been 17,630 visitors on the website... on the week-end.

If we keep this pace, by the end of next February, NOOL would celebrate its 6th million visitor.... :eek3:

When I subscribe it works apparently, but the posts disappear! I have to reopen the page...

Here's my advice: move everything to a Yahoo! Group and save a lot of bandwidth! :D [only kidding]

How many copies of Community left? No way you're going to do a "nice price" campaign? ;) It'd cost me more than buying the new New Order album in England! And they have the pound which is the most powerful currency in the world!

I hope you mean "highest value", because the Euro is by far the most powerful currency based on circulation, the economies behind it, etc.

*I mean powerful currency as for its relative value, because while the Euro increased a lot when compared to the dollar (but that's not necessarily a good thing becuase we pay less for import but export much less, and actually the Americans aren't worried that much), it didn't increase at all on the pound. The price of one pound, for me, is exactly the same of when we still had the Italian Lira back in 2001 (while the dollar is much cheaper now). While this could be good when you think that the pound was increasing a lot before the Euro, it also says the pound is a very stable currency keeping the balance with all the competitors, never being too strong or too weak (even if I made that example because for us it's still very expensive if it's not increased)... no wonder the British don't want to quit it...

So far so good... it seems the system is running much better than last week.

There is place for enhancement, I know.
