REVENGE : No Pain No Gain (Live 1991)

Hey people, I can't believe no one is talking about this gem! I know it's Sirens time, or maybe I lost the thread if it happened, but have you got this excellent (and cheap) CD from LTM? Bought it at Sister Ray and arrived in a couple of days (this is the faster way). Don't miss this brilliant album! It starts a bit weak, with a useless Intro Jam and Hooky can't find his voice on Jesus I Love You, but then it becomes a fabulous live CD which brings you all the live power of the best New Order side project ever... I've seen Monaco at the Astoria in 1997, it was great but I wish I had been at Cities In The Park in 1991... The bloody storming techno metal of Slave (my favourite Revenge song) is up there with New Order's best live moments and actually I'd like to hear stuff like this from New Order too... I think they were doing music with this energy, in their own way, when they were experimenting with the earliest versions of Temptation and EGG... Revenge mix that energy with Joy Division's fiercest moments, epic metal, porn techno and Kraftwerk, the result is awesome! Nothing beats that guitar solo on those keyboards. The vibe doesn't slow down as Hooky mercilessly keeps on his violent attack on the audience with astonishing renditions of Deadbeat (during which he screams like the Pixies' Frank Black), Bleachman and Cloud 9. Finally some rest comes from the relatively quiet, but still very intense State Of Shock before Hooky tops the performance with a superb performance of Dreams Never End, which makes me wonder why he never used again that highest tone of vocals... he always opted for his lower tone and it's not bad, but there's something so beautiful in his voice in Dreams Never End, I mean it's not a pretty voice of a true singer like Bernard's, but still I really like it becuase it sounds so powerful and honest, so "everyday man goes on stage and rocks the fookin house", while I've always found he tried to act a role with his lower voice, like he wanted to sound mean, or sexy or whatever... Anyway the CD gets even better in the second part from a Japanese concert, as the audio quality is almost perfect, though maybe I prefer the more powerful tracks of the first, it's great to hear in this quality songs like 7 Reasons, Kiss The Chrome and Pineapple Face (even better than the recorded version) with great covers of The Rolling Stones' Citadel and especially The Velvet Underground's White Light White Heat, as good as Joy Division's Sister Ray, eight minutes of pure rock'n'roll. Revenge were way too underrated... they had two different line ups but here we see once again both they had excellent bassists, guitarists and drummers. Best band ever after New Order and Joy Division (yeah, even better than the Pixies or The Smiths)... no one else made techno rock as Hooky at its peak in Revenge.

Do you mean it's hard to find for you or you don't know if you'll buy it anyway? If the problem is the first, in the Internet age, it can be easily solved. a) if you've got credit card: Sister Ray - Highly recommended fast and safe online order system, and a reseller of all the LTM releases. b) no credit card: Revenge page on LTM - Follow the link to mail order and contact James Nice via E Mail, ask for confirmation of every detail and send an International Money Order. Relatively fast and safe too. Bought quite some stuff this way before pre-paid credit cards for online shopping were introduced in Italy...

Hi there Mick, second try to post. Somehow it didn't work out just now Cities in the Park was great. You could feel the buzz going through the crowd when they started DNE. I can still recall that moment as if it happened only yesterday. Will try to get the cd, but like Almanso, money situation is not so good at the moment, plus, Krafty and WFTSC are first on the list

Just finished my first full listen - fookin' great CD!!! The second set from Japan is studio quality - funny to hear the difference in Hooky's banter between the 2. At home he's very cocky, but in Japan he's keeping it very much under control. He even manages a polite "Arrigato" to the crowd... Nice to see the site get a name check in the sleeve, but we have to club together and buy some of their old equipment so that next time NOOL is higher in the list than WIM... :)

This is an excellent quality cd. I was at the Manchester gig so it's a good memento. Worth it for the version of Dreams Never End.
