A virtual Instrumant question

Well a real question about virtual instruments. :)

In all my time twattin about with machines, real and software, I have NEVER found anything that can make those flat beep-like voyetra noises New Order use....nothing seems to have the same snap as those wonderful sequences at the statr of for example TPK. I did find ONE noise on ONE virtual synth that made a simmilar noise, but it was still just a bit too fluffy.

So does anyone know of a virtual ( VSTi) voyetra or anything that can make those altra dry NO noises?

Oh....and have you noticed you can get virtual beatboxes......virtual stylophones......virtual melotrons (MMMMMMM....sweet key-triggered-tape-sample-goodness) and even virtual theremins ( which sound just as awful as the very idea of such a thing)....but you can't get virtual fairlights or emulators.....wow I had no idea computer tech had got THAT much worse in only 25 years. And don't bother with the "fairlights and emulators only sounded "good" cos they were crap" agrument, I've been using samplers for 20 years and trust me, their inherent audio shiteness is NOT their source of beauty.....if it were, ppl would be trampling each other to get at casio SK1's....20 quid and MUCH crapper than a CMI-II.

Steve, its a cinch to create such a sound with any modest equipment, virtual or otherwise.

Your right, it needs to be 'tight' which is the crucial element for sequencing, thereafter it has to sound professionally 'thick' and 'sharp'. If you elaborate on the host sequencing package you are currently using I may be able to help.

I actually have found that a lot of the presets on the Roland Juno 106 work quite well for the sharp, poppy synth parts on Perfect Kiss and Temptation...

If there is a virtual "Roland" synth that has the early Juno presets I think that would get you sorted...

That said I know absolutely nothing about the virtual stuff as I like to actually touch the keyboards with my hands... I'm old fashioned I guess...

I've got JX220 and JunoX plug-ins. They're only small so I ca email them to anybody who is interested.

Just as an asside, does anyone have a listing of the gear that NO has used over the years?

I know at least a little of it could be figured out, as its plainly seen in the TPK video, though I've got no idea what any of it is.

Steve... I can't help by suggesting any virtual instruments since I haven't looked to see what's out lately, but I can help uncover what makes the Voyetra Eight sound like it does. The secret lies in the cross modulation and sync funtions. Seek out other synths with this feature and you'll have something close to those clangy type noises in TPK. I'd almost bet money that the main synth line is the sound of oscillator sync... just make it short and percussive. Off the top of my head a few non virtual synths capable of this type of sound are: Nord Lead I (does a darn good Prophet 5 imitation also), Jupiter6,8, and MKS-80, Alesis Andromeda, JP-8000, Virus, or any 'ol modular might do. ;)
