New Order & Football Hooligans

New Order & Football Hooligans - A lot of journalists always point out that New Order are very popular with football hooligans - is there a real reason for this or is it just sensationalism on the part of the journalists?: confused2:

As with most things New Order, a bit of truth and a bit of myth is often blurred. From my experience, your hardcore football hooligan is unlikely to have a clue who New Order are. They might have heard True Faith, BLT and Blue Monday in passing but wouldn't know who they were by. Football hooligans aren't the easiest bunch of people to pin down to set sociological habits. If you'd class a gang of lads who go to the match and would fight, if needs be, as football hooligans; then you're looking at quite a broad cross-section of society and musical tastes. If you look at the kind of people who would go out of their way to organise fights, are not too concerned about the odd prison sentence and have a record of cautions and banning orders as long as your arm, not unduly concerned about slashing opposition fans; I'd say you'd find a tiny proportion of them are New Order fans.

If you look at a third group who saw 'Hooliganism' as a bit of a lark and were more concerned about looking good than fighting; then you might have something. They are unlikely to have many battle scars. Perhaps some of them did get quite involved but most probably saw it as a bit of an edgy scene that was fashionable. The same way as the next thing to come along was, Acid House. I doubt many were ever that exposed to danger. Personally speaking, going to our away games on the ordinary with all our scallies, I only ever had to defend myself on one occasion. Most of the time was spent drinking or being herded around the underground. We generally had 3-10,000 at our games so it might have been a different story for the likes of Luton who may have only had a few hundred fans in total at an away game.

Hank, you should have a quick look over at ITK. Mr Dufford Charleywood is regularly educating the masses on the virtues of Joy Division and New Order.

Watched a documentary about football hooliganism on Channe4 a couple of yerars ago and they had loads of New Order tunes in the background.Like, they would have a snip of Perfect Kiss with Bernard singing "let`s go out and have some fun!" over footage of some poor lad having the shit kicked out of him by 5 neanderthals!

I think it's safe to assume, that this myth of New Order appealing to football hooligans is a complete load of rubbish fabricated by small minded journalists. Further to this Bernard Sumner has many times stated his hatred of violence of any kind and anyone who thinks some of his lyrics encourage football hooliganism or any kind of violence for that matter need to grow up. For the record any football hooligans I have encountered have liked: Erasure!??

Have you not read any of the posts here from people knowledgeable about football hooliganism then? New Order is one of the casual's bands of choice, a band that is identified with musically by a large number of young people who also have an interest in football-related violence. That's nothing to do with journalists, and nothing to do with Bernard not liking violence. Nobody is saying that New Order are football hooligans, are they?!

All the football hooligans that I know/knew in Derby..( The DLF )..were all most likely to be into Take That

Yay! An Irish NO fan who doesn't support the scummers!

As a Brighton fan, I'd normal object to an agressive buyout like Glazers. But no, its only fucking ManU. They deserve to be homeless and falling down the league after DESTROYING the Premiership with their greediness.

New Order are football fans, and have writen football related songs, WIFM & Best & Marsh. These however were a bit late.
