Just picked up the NME free CD with I Told Your Soap on ... Holy moly is 4:09 in the biggest audio clanger ever dropped? - the entire track vanishes for a nano-second.

This has been mentioned before by a downloader but this CD is the real baloney.

4:09 kids, get checking.

If I'm really lucky, I might get to check this next Wednesday.

Don't complain too much. We won't get that issue on ENEMY magazine for about a month, as to if it will have a disc, who knows.

Yup, just got it home for 1st time & 4:09/4:10 has a gap alright.

As my brother the builder (Ricky the Brickie) says "that'll be a feature" - we should be paying extra for that:evil4:

Good song tho' - sounds far better this way than on the BBC excerpt.

Huntsman, just thought I'd drop in to let you know I've heard the title track now and share your enthusiasm for it. Superb.

couldn't answer you that one H. Of the 5 tracks I've heard so far, I've been pretty impressed by them all to be honest, even Krafty's started hitting the spot. But WFTSC is far and away the best.

I suspect it has been included deliberately on this release. It's not present on the promo.

Well that seems odd, the NME disk surely is a bonafide item? ... what's the point of having such an audio mishap on that?

As it stands, I would have been better downloading a version the old fashioned way.

SB - where does I Told Your Soap stand in the quality stakes?

There's much talk of the hit song 'Turps' ... I haven't heard a whisker of this one. Have you bared witness?

Oooh that's a bad glitch at 4:09. Hope they've fixed that on the album release. "I Told You So" is quite a surprising experiment. It's quite good in a reggae/rock crossover type stylee but needs a catchier chorus. Did anyone else think they were about to merge it into Happy Mondays "Wrote For Luck" at a couple of points ? Sounds like a Soulwax remix idea to me.

There was a band called Boo Radleys who had a brilliant reggae/rock song on an album called Giant Steps about 10 years ago. Songtitle escapes me at the moment.

yeah quite like it - think it's a decent song without ever likely to be one of my favourites.

Talking of Rock/reggae, Grand National did a couple of decent songs on their last album doing it.

I have been deliberating how to properly appraise the track P - I hadn't forgotten to write a potted review.

The main stumbling block is that I wanted the 'is this average' mood to pass; unfortunately it hasn't. I do not enjoy being negative so I'll steer from this path.

When I first heard Guilty Parsnips and Round the Bend pre-Technique I kept playing and playing and playing and playing the tracks. In short, they were touching and sensational. I played Soap last night and thought, mmm ... this is o-k-a-y, and then I didn't' play it again until this morning in my motion generator.

Its not a bad track, but its not an outstanding New Order song. It isn't as good as any song on Technical Lego which, obviously, isn't the best news to have been announced in the last minute (and I keep mentioning this album as I feel the vibe of the Sirens shares a kindred spirit).

Some Electronic material is overly complex using 'soft' synthesized sounds and effects, I feel Soapy suffers the same loss of direction. It's absolutely fine to get carried away with music as the old 12"s did (Sub-Culture, Shame of the Nation, Bizarre Right Angle etc.) but only if the song has majesty and beauty, and the melodies are up to scratch. Soap just slithers and melts into mediocrity - it could have been called I Told You to Skip the track. Running Bernard's vocal track through a distortion pedal doesn't help either.

In summary, its a bit like an average Electronic track. 3/10. It is very similar to the rap one off The Republican (the vocal sound almost the same). This Song could be added to the new category associated with New Order; the not-so-good songs.

On an upper - the other songs I've heard: WFTSC and Krispy Duck gain a 10 and a 7 respectively. Which ain't so bad.

Well, H, that's not the best news I've had this morning. I recognize the "busy" quality you refer to in some Electronic stuff. I actually have something of a soft spot for Times Change. In any event, early reactions from those who've heard the full-length Call did not identify this one as among the best, so all I can do is be patient and hopeful.

Times Change I think is actually better than Soapy. I too have a certain inner respect for it, although mainly the bits that aren't rap orientated.

The title track is now entrenched as the album highlight for me. I was more keen on Turn initially but there's a few thing starting to bother me slightly about it.

Agree about The Carribean one being a skipper. Indeed I skipped it last night. It's not the kind of thing you'd want to be moving volumes of air around at volume level 14,(one under distortion) as you waited at the lights in the presence of nubile totty.

My 'iPod Therefore iAm' thread was set-up 'without prejudice' to ascertain the balance of 'downloaders' vs. 'non-downloaders'; let's call it the goodies vs. baddies for easyness.

I expressed on a number of occassions that the thread was not a witch hunt, or indeed a hunt for any witches. It was simply an interesting topic to dwindle upon.

The results put the 'downloaders' in the lead by a royal mile, out of interest, which indicates a strong return to form for the boot makers.

In this weather? Ladies of the night? I was at a red light not a red light district.

Chimera or Honey Badger was a recent topic of discussion on another site I frequent. Apparently the honey badger is a hard bastard and can survied cobra attacks with little more than a 6 or 7 hour coma. Untreated the cobra venom would be enough to kill 5 men. Bee stings are like water of a ducks back, as it endures a ferocious attack from a swarm without flinching.

That's impressive stats. on the Honey Badger. Surviving such a venomous attack surely stands the animal in good stead when he has to tackle a lion or something with strength in depth.

Have you seen a Honey Badger? - they look not unlike small monkeys. Certainly not the badger type which appears in the movies (although I can't think of a recent badger film other than Badger Sips Milk 2 released last year). The critters which crawl on the hunt for peanuts usually have a spiky back which does help when faced with lorries.

Did I ever tell you about the joust I had with a shower spider?

To be frank Huntsy, I probably would rather tuck away a seasoned carrot than sup on one of your steaming skimmed milks.

Apparently consuming carrots is excellent for eyesight. If I put away another crate or two I'll have night vision.

The Shower Spider Story

Firstly, the shower spider is not a real division of the arachnid family, I coined it myself after I leapt into shower county to cleanse the days toil.

OK so I’ve lit a few candles, dimmed the lights and put some suitable whale noises on rotation (I think one of them was Orca killer whale but I can’t be certain as they’d mixed in some dolphins and seagulls). I leapt into the showering unit and I turned on the spray. All was going well ... all was going very very well.

Suddenly, as if a whisper had passed my nose, I began to think I was not alone. I checked East, nothing, I checked West - zilch, I checked East again and still nothing ... I didn’t check West any more - there was no need. Then the strangest feeling crept over me, what if some-thing was stood behind me (technically South). I span ‘round like a chicken on the spit ... nothing!

... dare you read on?

I turned back to face the controls and eased a little bit more warmth to ease my tepid brow. I sang along to the beautiful tones of a seagull family passing over a rocky cliff (I imagined that bit) but the feeling came back.

I can’t explain precisely how I knew but I just knew - I knew that an incredibly huge spider was sat proud of me, almost touching my heel - watching as I operated with hair products. Never before have I cleared such a distance so sparingly clothed. I practically leapt twice my own body height.

Soaking wet with gel in my eyes and a segment of coral wedged in my ear I stared at the spider. He wasn’t budging, and seemed impervious to my stature (it was a beautiful site ... for the spider). There was only one option to me; flush the fella down the plug hole. I grasped the spraying tool and began pelting him. He stood like a statue as the water bounced off his chest. It took a good while but he eventually yielded, curling up into a tiny little ball of hair he flew at about a thousand miles an hour toward the sink. I saw him slip beyond the plug holes and he disappeared into the drain. But, like all good movies (mainly Spiderman) he managed to somehow catch himself underneath the holes and grip on like some kind of freakish super spider.

Impressive, I thought. I rotated the nozzle to ‘rock hard spray’ and gunned at the little might as he stuck himself upside down with all 8’s. The fight lasted most of the night with much shouting and tom foolery but eventually he slipped on a litre of gel I splattered at him and span down towards drainsville. That’s right, I didn’t fight fair.

“AAaarrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!” he cried as he span out of control, defeated at the hands of an old master.

Success!

I was never going to share my shower with a spider, at least not on that specialist day.

Shaken, but not quite stirred, I proceeded with my beauty treatment until I was ready to pepper my back with a towel. But then, as I concluded my session, I had the same nagging doubt. That horrible creeping feeling. Yes, the same super shower spider had climbed all of the way back up the pipe and was sat precisely in the same ‘heel’ position as before - ready to beat my arse.

Unfortunately for him he must have been a bit jaded as the merest spot of water knocked him flying up in the air and down the plug hole in one.

I feel a bit sorry for him now - but at the end of the day, it was me or him.*

*No spider was hurt during this incident.

It's magnificent that you chose to face your enemy off nude, like two great Spartan warriors. A true leveller. But I think you cheated a little with the use of technology.

It reminded me of that terrible scene in The Last Samurai when the Japanese Imperial Army were mowing down the proud swordsmen with a gattling gun.

:\pimp3:

I must confess it was a bit one sided.

Although I'd never associate myself with a Samurai I have to conceed that I did turn to technology quite easily (which is a concern for any future duelling if the technology is not as accessible).

The poor bastard was defeated by shower gel.

If I was in a Japanese film where I had to leap over houses with flexible wire carrying a decent sword I'd probably meet my match quite quickly.

Gattling guns are a very specialist product.

You either mean 'Upon 9th And Fairchild' (the 2nd track), or the intro to the excelent 'Lazarus'. Boy, I miss that band. Had to leg it from one tent while they played at Reading 93 to catch New Order headlining - a very annoying clash at the time!!

Yes, thanks. I was thinking of 'Upon 9th And Fairchild'. Great song with a reggae verse and a rock chorus. 'Lazarus' was a brilliant single too. Saw them a few times live too. They had a few hits but no one really noticed them much. Should have been bigger. One of life's great mysteries, along with why did That Petrol Emotion never have a hit ? Maybe they'll all be rediscovered in 10 years.

Aye, I have everything they released except the rare, vinyl-only debut album 'Ichabod & I'. On 'Learning To Walk', you can find their John Peel session cover of 'True Faith', 'Boo! Faith'. They were big Order fans - 'Barney...And Me' was named after Mr Sumner, as they felt the song sounded a bit like NO.

I think I've got everything the Boo Radleys released. I know I've got that "Ichabod" mini LP somewhere. Didn't know it was so rare. I thought it had a CD re-release a couple of years but maybe that was just rumour. If my memory serves me right that "Ichabod" mini LP is brilliant and worth tracking down. I saw them live the week it came out. They sounded a lot like Dinosaur Jr on that debut and that is a complement. Definitely them at their noisiest before they started writing catchy pop songs.
