Im not sure if anyone else has commented on this, but some bits of news from Saville taken from the NME and Mojo.

  1. He is not directly involved in the cover for WFTSC, instead leaving it to be Art Directed by Bernard Sumner and Howard Wakefield – an associate of Savilles. He said it was “time to move on” from New Order, and that Pop Album sleeves aren’t his thing now he is 50. As far as I know, Wakefield has worked for Saville for some time, and I think he is behind the photoshop plug in usage of the Pirelli calendar and “waste paintings”. Saville said he wanted to do the cover as a reconstruction of the PCL cover, only with real flowers, etc. It seems the band and him have been having pretty bad relations of late anyhow – reading (maybe far too much) between the lines.
  2. Saville sort of distanced himself from the cover of “Get Ready” saying that again Bernard was heavily involved.
  3. The advert for Krafty in the NME has 2 features previously undistinguishable: The picture is actually colour – although only just, and the Font is Helvetica, not Avant Garde, so we can all breath a sigh of relief: Its consistent with the album cover typeface!
  4. In the advert for WFTSC in Mojo, it seems that just the NO is on the cover, and is a gold/brown colour, not orange.

Mojo is well worth getting actually. A good read. I was just wondering if anyone else picked up on this info and wanted to comment.

I don't like WFTSC's cover at all. Surely they could of come up with something nicer than that.

I hope they change it, I think it's near unreleasable with that cover IMO, looks like a quick rush job on photoshop. I'm not sure what they were trying to achieve with it. A minimal look? well maybe, but that could of been done better, the "No" just doesn't look right, would be better if both letters were capitals or if a . was put between them, just doesn't look right in my eyes.

It's only a cover at the end of the day, I'd like to see it changed though.

Well, they did it once with Substance ;)

I think it is a duff cover design to be honest. Shame as I was looking forward to seeing a new Saville design. It sounds like the previous version he had designed, which had some kind of mermaid design against a seascape, to tie in with the album title, was much more interesting. Apparently the Tsunami meant that some people got senstive about it (the record company most likely) and rejected it

Whether any of us like the sleeve or not, isn't it telling that to New Order fans, the sleeves mean nearly as much as the music....

Just a opinion about the sleeve: it's great! This big NO claim for atention and it's clean. I like it. :thumb:

The cover rules, it has a sense of humour but the minimalism adds a quiet dignity to it. It is also unique, which will get people's attention. Not any easy thing to do nowadays without a half naked woman or an disembodied clown head on a stick.

Thanks Clockwork!

My 1st impression: The cover sucks. The dyslexic in me sees [orange]WFTSC[/orange] as [orange]What the Fuck: Sucky Cover[/orange]. Glad to know it's not Saville's work, and sad to know he's moved on.

I would have loved to see Saville's idea for a reconstruction of PCL instead of this crap. But then again, that would have delayed release by a few years... :evil4:

So New Order took over the design matters again? That's interesting. Let's see how creative they were:

Joy Division's cover, 1978:

Stephen Morris's, 1981:

Now it's Sumner's turn... unless he had already stood behind the "Get Ready" art.

Its a sad day when the Stereophonics have very new order looking sleeve, and New Order have one that looks like its a rip off of Pet Shop Boys.

Its nice to know that at least the fans of the bands graphics can call a turd a turd... now if only the music fans could wake up from their fog...

I actually think the artwork is the best NO LP cover, with the possible exception of TECHNIQUE. I think that the typography is brilliant, the orange is chosen perfectly and the composition is fantastic.

I'd love a PC&L inspired artwork. It's one of their best albums and the one that they went on and left behind most of the sound they had in Joy Division. Maybe the most influential NO album. Although this album doesn't have anything to do with that one (except both are from the "same band"), it would be a good thing to pay tribute to one of the most important releases in music history. Depeche Mode did if firstly with Exciter, one of their weakest album IMHO - the artwork seems to be a tribute to Violator, maybe their best album.

hmm, the ad in mojo shows the sleeve to be subtly different - just the No on the front & in a browny orange colour with no new order waiting for the sirens call in the top corner...

wonder what the final version will be.
