SO what is your list of characters or famous people who've inspired and repulsed you in equal measures?

Seeing as we're so list-obsessed of late, I thought I'd add yet another one for people to chew over and have endless disputes about . Mine are (roughly - as the list seems to change with the tides and seasons) in no particular order.

Those who have inspired: (list incomplete)

Siouxsie Sioux / Sarah Cracknell / The Pink Panther Cartoon Character / Norman Bates / Roy Lichtenstein / Ronald Searle / Bagpuss / Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) from The Avengers / Patrick McGoohan as Number Six (The Prisoner) / Hartley Hare / Suggs from Madness / Noddy Holder / The Goodies / Kim Deal / Marty Hopkirk / Cozy Powell (he turned me onto playing drums at the age of 5) / Alfred Hitchcock / Clive Barker / Alexei Sayle / Tom And Jerry / Stan,Kyle,Cartman and Kenny / Adam & Joe / Trent Reznor / Martin Atkins (Pigface) / Louis Armstrong / Henry Mancini / David Hockney / Jerry Sadowitz / Billy Bragg / Terry Gilliam (if only for his fucking brilliant cartoons in Monty Python) / Jayne Middlemiss (that saucy pout! oh yes!)......

Those who have repulsed: (list incomplete)

The Real IRA / Jimmy Tarbuck / Osama Bin Laden / Tony Blair / John Major / Baroness Thatcher / John Prescott / The House of Lords / Peter Tatchell / Robbie Williams / Elton John / Reg Holdsworth (Ken Morley) / Jonathan King / Jimmy Corkhill (character) / Trevor Jordache (character) / Paul Gascoigne / Jimmy Hill / Benny Hill / Ronnie Corbett / Bob Monkhouse / Mary Whitehouse (thank fuck she's dead then) / Prince Phillip (utter utter useless wanker) / Gerald Corbett (ex-Railtrack fat cat) / Jonathan Ross / Mark Goodier / Phoebe from "Friends" / Cher / Pariah Harey / Whitney Houston / Michael Jackson / Damien Hurst / Liam Gallagher / Robert Thompson & John Venables / Peter Sutcliffe / Michael Bolton / Phil Collins / Peter Stringfellow......

let's hear yours......

Pros(in rough chronological order): Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, "Night of the Hunter(original)", Steve Prefontaine, Tom McCall, Ronnie Lee, Monty Python, SNL, The Ramones, Kraftwerk,Blixa Bargeld, Cabaret Voltaire, "Rules of the Game", Nick Cave, David McComb and the Triffids, Matt Groening, King Tubby, Mark Stewart, Adrian Sherwood, "Northern Exposure", David Lynch, Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets, Steve Kilbey, R.E.M., "Seinfeld", Massive Attack, MST3K, John Irving(except for his last book), Roddy Frame, and as always, JD/NO. That's all right off of the top of my head, but that about covers it.

Cons: most politicians, dial-up modems, AOL, irresponsible interpretations of religious text( Moral Majority, Osama, etc,), the attitudes of most professional sports players, Paul Weller(post-82), The Eagles, Christina Aguilera, all "boy" bands, TRL, most American TV (I was channel surfing last night, and they showed, I swear to God, on American Movie Classics, the Village People's movie "Can't Stop The Music". Oh well, it could have been worse, they could have shown that "Sgt. Pepper" movie with the Bee Gees).

Thanks, Brian. The records move pretty quickly down here, especially the ON-Usound stuff, but I gotta drive an hour one way to get ahold of them(PDX or Eugene). Picked up a B&F 10" by Scientist of Step It Up the other day; one side has the Black Star Liner Remix, the other has the Dan Donovan for Don Letts Dub Cartel Remix). Both sides are mighty fine.:smoking:

I saw that Adrian was scheduled to be at EMP w/ Lee 'Scratch' Perry and the Mad Professor a couple of weeks ago. Did you make it to that show? Found out the day of the show, so plans couldn't be changed.

Never noticed this thread before - better think of some things to stick in it then!! Unfortunately, me drink-addled mind cannot at presnet come up with any true nuggets as yet, so a couple of starters will have to do for now, until I come back with a better list.

Heroes - David Bowie (of course - though only up to 1978 - see below!) Norman Greenbaum, Ian Curtis, John Lydon, Joe Strummer, Tony Benn, The Iggster

Villains- David Bowie (for everything he's done after 1978), Boy george (for everything he's ever done) , Useless Boy/Girl bands and other Manufactured pop puppets, Middlesborough locals (their appalling musical tastes espescially)

That's all for now - be back when I've got a better list.

What's wrong with Robert Altman? MASH (the movie) is quite possibly the funniest depiction of the American military, and the Player is pretty good, if a bit long.

Hey Niel,

Let's just say that Coco wasn't the most patriotic soul during WWII and had to leave her own country for a decade afterwards. I really don't want to get into more than that. It's all public record. You can find the details if you like. And remember, I'm the kinder, gentler Michael.

Damn, sorry about that folks.

T7,

My disdain for Mr. Altman comes not from his directing ability but from his view that "if GWB wins the election, I'm leaving the country". Anyway, he popped off again. You can go to Drudge for the link. If it's already gone, go to PageSix.com.

I had the live concert disc of that...for about two days. I returned it and got Sgt. Pepper instead. The Pistols sounded alright, it just seemed like they'd become the new Metallica wannabes.

Supermario,

First of all, Pope John Paul II is not retarded. I would doubt that any of us would want to compare c.v.'s with him. I think you can do better than that for a slam. Come on now, I know you've got a few more Kw in that dome of yours! :)

Anyway, a reason why the Pope is one of my heroes is because he has the inner strength, peace and faith to forgive a man who fired a burning hot slug into his midsection. How many of us could say that?

Niel,

North & Nixon.......

From my personal perspective, they're sympatheitc villains. My list contains people I just can't stand and who I feel have no redeeming value.

Good call.

Supermario,

This is off the current "off topic" thread: I have a 12" single called "Looking From A Hilltop" by Section 25. Is this the same Section 25 you reference in your bio?

The Pope's not retarded, he's just incredibly old and near death. Poor bastard, and he never even had a woman....God, hope I get some action before I'm that old.

Speaking of old, Strom Thurmond (our esteemed senator from SC and 4th or 5th in line to the Presidency)is so old he can remember Abe Lincoln. Strom's so old he dictated the Ten Commandments to Moses. How old is he? Strom's so old that he blew the whistle on Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Ehhmmm, interesting point of view. Indeed , it is a very noble thing to turn the other cheek. In that perspective he might be considered a hero. For me the pope represents the catholic church and all that comes with it. My main point of seeing him, or rather cath.church, as a villain has got to do with not allowing/promoting the use of birthcontrol-items, which imo causes lots of shit in poor catholic countries. I'll quikly post, cause from 23.00 hrs the server at my job will disconnect. Speak again tomorrow...now i'm off:smoking:

Didn't know Altman said that as well. I only heard about the Baldwin who was married to Kim Basinger saying that.

The Sex Pistols reforming was frankly the most embarrassing public spectacle I have ever seen. Talk about pissing on your own legacy in the name of shameless gullibility.... Stupid c***s.

have to correct myself on Section 25, Michael! I've got the album with that song on it! Brilliant album though. What other song(s) are on the 12"??

This old thread has resurfaced again???!! Well, better add to my Villains list the stuck up toffee-nose git who blocked us from loading the lighting gear via the main reception of Mytholmroyd civic hall the other night then- simply because he didn't want his precious carpet getting wet from the dripping poles. Kept us waiting out in the pissing rain for quarter of a hour before he could be bothered opening the back fire exit doors. What an absolute bastard! The show was shite anyway - hope they made a loss on takings - like I care. :violent:
