What are the legal download sites like for quality? I find that anything that I compress into .mp3 sounds awful whatever I play it on. Burning back onto cd seems to be even worse. I've always assumed that the compression process loses clarity, but maybe I'm doing something wrong? If people are paying for .mp3 downloads shouldn't they be getting cd quality? If they're the same quality as the filesharing files, or even my own rips, they are not worth paying for in my opinion.
Um you'll find a correctly burned 128kbps MP3 is basically CD quality. CD is still best but it's not really noticeable, it's best to burn MP3's in 192kbps plus, but a 128kbps MP3 file should still sound the same kind of quality as a CD. Just as long as it has been digitally burned from the the source CD using a good program. And I'm sure all itunes files are of good quality, after all, you are paying for them.
I know there's different compression rates, but I've never heard an .mp3, or a cd made from one, that I have been entirely happy with. A metallic sound at the top end and crummy levels across the range is how I would describe it. Thanks for the info though - I'll investigate and try ripping some stuff at higher rates.
One things for sure, if the WFTSC files that, erm, my friend downloaded from P2P are representative of the sound quality we get from the real album, I'll not be impressed.
I've just checked that naughty friend's pc and the bit rates of all the WFTSC files are between 190-210kbps and they all sound shit wherever I play them. No, I don't mean shit, I mean poorer quality that I would expect for something recorded on modern equipment.
I guess I could be doing something wrong...

iTunes files are MPEG-4 actually, so a good quality if I remember well, they are compressed with AAC.. so it's better than mp3...
If you're thinking of recording music to your comp, use Windows Media Player. It uses WMA not MP3, and i've once heard Spotnick praise WMA files saying that a 64kbps WMA is infact the same quality as 128kbps MP3. I was actually intrigued as to how that works!?
I once copied the Best Of album to my pc using Windows Media Player at 192kbps WMA and was actually quite impressed by the results, from what I heard it sounded the same as when playing CD.

WMA 9+ is a good format, the only problem is, it's not supported everywhere...
Example, on my iPod I can't put them, they need to be converted.. so I'd rather use mp3, it's still more standard.
Howver, I do 320 kbps mp3 now everytime.. after all, drive space is cheap.
So what about if I burn a song in 192k WMA 10 then convert it to 192k MP3, will I get quality loss?

The sound quality on the Krafty CD is excellent. The best I've ever heard from NO. Likewise the NME cd, except for that blip at 4:09.

My copy is in the post from Amazon. Saying that, I haven't even heard that it's been sent yet. Hopefully, they're selling so many that the warehouse can't cope.
