Welcome everybody to our new forum application, I seriously hope you will enjoy it, it's quite empty right now, but I believe I'll do my best to make to import all data from the previous one.

We had serious issue with the previous forum, but this one should be more stable, and as you might notice, this is what inspired what I have done on NOOL.

Let me configure it property and you'll feel at home! Sorry if you have to register, I don't really have the time to import the user database in here, maybe it will enventually be done.

Looking good Spotnick. Will the old threads be imported at some stage? Also can the usual suspects be given access to the weeding forum?

I should be able to import them, at least I'll try, but then again, I'd have to import the user database before.

But maybe it's not a bad idea to start fresh.

Your call. Appreciate the time and effort.

You mentioned you might need more donations--how much you looking for?

Two queries: can we get the old smilies back instead of msn ones? And is the weeding forum still on?

Once again, top job mate....although its going to be a bastard going through the back catalogue in the Song Review forum!

Wow! Starting everything from the scratch. It's not a bad idea really.

At least the search engine works fine on this forum. [:P]

Thanks for all your work over the years Nic.

It really is strange to be in here with NOTHING around.

For once, I have more posts that all the UK guys...

I would not import the old threads.  If they are important they will return on their own.

What about weeding??

What about weeding??

I guess it won't be back now.

No reason not to have the weeding forum again. There were still a few of us participating although with easytree and individual trading there is less of a need. Always fun to get a gig in the post and I would be up for it if everyone else was.

Maybe it's not a problem now but when it was started there was the fear that the official types that have been known to browse here weren't exactly too keen on seeing Nic's site associated with such nefariousness.

I could be overreacting. :)

Spotnick, the new forum looks good, and loads about 10 times faster for me. For some reason the old NOOL threads would take a bit to open (maybe because of the traffic).

Funny (well, not really funny but..), I post frequently on another message board that recently had problems, and we had to start from scratch. I probably had close to 800 posts on that board, all wiped out, but whatever. # of posts does not = status symbol. Just means I like to talk a lot!

Bring back the old forums! Long live the new flesh!

Doing my best for the smilies... [evil4]

Don't know yet how it exactly works, but I'll find out.

For the weeding, problem is, the 100 posts limit isn't quite true these days hehe...

Give it 15 mins, that's the cache delay if I remember right. [:D]

I guess the smilies too.. hum.

Just for the record, you need to upload your avatar, now you can do it !

I can't seem to make the smilees to show up in my posts.

How is everybody else doing it?

Thx.

Spotnick re weeding forum

Perhaps access can be dished out to the regulars and from then on those who reach the golden milestone can be let in? Of course there are people I frequently trade with anyway so its no big deal.

I've got another wee gripe. I keep getting emails telling me people have replied to this thread when I've disabled notifications on my profile. No offense like but I don't give a shit who responds to this topic. :)

Don't you see the panel at the left when you are posting?

You can also use the codes directly, but I admit, my system was better than this one.

I forgot to specify... I do have the source code of this forum application, so yes, I can do whatever I want with it and put it back inside the NOOL main application (which is what is likely to happen in the long run)

There are a few things I'll have to modify, like this smilies map and the way smilies are handled.

But the problem is, it's monday (er... tuesday) and I won't have any time to work with this really before next week-end, so the point right now is really to test it and see if it can handle NOOL's pressure ;)

If it does, then I'll start playing with it, because it has a lot of very nice features in it... but if I start modifying it, I can't upgrade, so I must do it all myself ;)

Nicos - I said this last time something went wrong, but you know that if you used a PHP based forum, it wouldn't fall apart every time the server load went a bit too high for Windows + IIS to handle...

Does 'post a new message' mean you're starting a new thread?

this is gonna take some getting used to. sorry to see that we're starting from scratch although some of the old forums were heavily polluted, so no loss there.

whatever you decide on the weeding, I want in !

Nice to have this back finally. Liking the new colour schemes too. Very simplistic.

Why retain the avatars if there's problems with bandwidth Nic? Surely if every thread has 20 posts and each poster has a 10k avatar then that's 200k being read straight off. I have to turn colours / graphics off when I'm working cos of some people's liberal use of colour schemes and graphics which makes work-surfing nigh on impossible in an open plan office.

Do we really need the history back? I'm not sure it's necessary. I can't think of many forums bar the alt. newsgroups where you can check history. Seems a bit of a waste.

And is this members only now? Good idea if it is. You look at a British website like In The Know which has many more posters than this is likely to have and over-user of graphics and avatars but you have to member just to VIEW, so sorts the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

Keep up the good work. Nice one!

We don't have any bandwidth issues anymore. In fact, we have more than enough.

I believe in 1 week this forum will be full of new interesting threads... so it's not really necessary to  Plus, this one has a purging system... a post not viewed for 90 days will be deleted.. I can change it if I want though.

Excuse me if I'm asking something that's already been asked, but can I stop my e-mail address being available to all, and I can't change my gender from 'not specified' (insert your own joke here).

Also, when you post on a multi-page thread like this one, it puts you back to the first page when you hit 'post'...

Too small? You are having a laugh! One millimetre across would be too big for an avatar.

I can't seem to change anything. All of the settings in my profile keep defaulting back after I save.  I don't want emails, but I'm still getting them. I've uploaded an avatar, but it disappears. I've tried this in both IE and Firefox, and it doesn't seem to matter. I can't even find an option to delete my account, if I wanted to do so. Anyone else having these problems?

In case you didn't notice.. nobody can see your email address.. if you hit "email", it's a page that will send you an email, but the sender will never know it.

I guess it can be disabled somewhere...

Great job, Nic, but is there a simple editor as well like in the old forum? Haven't found it in the options... Also the old smilies (some of them are still here as post icons) were much better than the MSN smilies... Seems very fast! Oi, where's me fookin avatar?! Uploaded it but I can't see it... Finally, every time you reply or edit you're then taken to the first page of the thread rather than the one where your reply is... Oh, and what does "Post Mouse-Over Popup " exactly means?

Here are my bug bears....

I keep receiving emails from the forums, even though I haven't asked to. I try to change the settings, but the settings just default... I can't use the Emoticons because apparently Mac users can't use them (is this correct?) And when I go to quote someones email in a forum, it shows up ok in the preview, but when I actually post the message, the quote is all in code.... At least my Avatar is working.....

Same thing is happening to me. My avatar has finally shown up, but I can't turn off email replies.

Looks like my text size isn't changing, either.

Please send me one of those messages you get so I can investigate further...

Spinner, how do you 'enable' the modern smiley?

I type :hat: and this happens!?

... I typed 'colon' 'hat' 'colon' !?

Is it down to my Mac prowess?

Good, the avatar is working (I didn't realize you had to click "update" next to the pic as this option is sort of indipendent from all the other changes you can do with the button at the bottom of the page), though the forum does not support animated GIFs so I changed it. I'm happy the E Mail messages of the subscribed messages are more readable, with text at the top, though it seems we can't see smilies, even if I chose to receive HTML too. Nic, I think you should place something on both the Community on the site where our other profiles are and here on the forum to warn people they must have TWO different accounts to access the two areas, at the moment some might be confused... Great to see the good old smilies back! :thumb: It would be cool to have the simpler text editor back too... One thing I'm missing is the old forum ranks, from Candidate to Member Of The Brotherhood etc., I though the most of them were dead cool... I noticed the "post icon" has no effect...

I've tried smiley activation now in both Safari and Internet Explorer, and also clicking on 'Quote'. Each results in a series of code from The Matrix II.

I guess Mac's aren't compatible.

is it cos I is mac? likewise mine have been riddled with unsightly code. it's a bit discouraging to quote, link, emote or attach images. especially when the posts look so pretty in preview too...

Well Facsy I think it's the same old Mac story I'm afraid my old copying device. It plain just don't work.

Interesting point though, the 'preview' looks well ... but then you click 'post' and all hell is let loose.

One day though, Nick might check inside this thread that he executed and you never know, he may even read this?

It seems Mac have this problem, as well as Opera or FireFox users... I'll investigate and report that bug to the authors.

huntsman wrote: Spinner, how do you 'enable' the modern smiley? I type :hat: and this happens!?

Seems to be a Mac issue... I'll try to plug the old editor back to help Mac support... I have 2 moderators on Mac, that doesn't help too much!

Finally I think I've realized what "Post Mouse-Over Popup" means, it's a cool feature, to preview the message from the index... :thumb:  Any chance of having the good old simple editor back, this one takes longer to load than the thread pages on my five years old PC...

I'm not considering anything I can't modify myself.

Remember that this system is not there to stay, but it gives me time to have the old one working right... of course I'll migrate all the changes from this one to the old one when it will be ready.

That's my goal.. it could take a lot of time, but it will be done eventually... my first goal right now is to have both running on the same database...

I've finally identified when the crash happens:  1 I enter and browse the forum with no problems 2 I close any Explorer window (be it Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, anything 3 Windows 98 crashes, though luckily Ctrl + Alt + Canc works and I don't have to go into the Disk Scan of the button Reset, which would take more than three minutes! I hope something changes soon, because I wouldn't like my system to freeze for good, crash after crash... I'll try browsing it on Opera or Firefox, though I know there are issues with those browsers, but hopefully they won't crash my system...

i'm uncomfortable with change; or perhaps it's uncomfortable with me. i had a hell of a time 'joining' this new forum!

Uhm, Opera just gives you a plain text editor, you can always format through code of course... Firefox seems to work OK, but it actually doesn't (the word "OK" here should be bold!) the smilies don't work... where's that page with the smilies code? Luckily I remember some though: :) :( ;) :D  :evil4: :nonono: :thumb:

Well at least they don't crash! :thumb: Still I'll use one of these to avoid IE crashes until a new forum version surface... anyway thanks for the hard work...

I'm not haivng a pop or anything it was just a suggestion :D

Putting my IT head on though, if there is a tool out there that works fully and can be used to control access, moderation etc etc why not use it as opposed to one that does allow customisation but doesn't work as well and is slower?

I guess it's because I don't know why you want to customise it so mayeb you've got plans that Vbulletin wouldn't support?

Uhm, tried to post with the "plain text editor" I wrote above you see on Opera, but actually you can't quote as the result is a load of code displayed on the page...

This leaves me with the only option of Firefox, though the editor does not format or smilies (and the yellow label in the index with the preview of the message is one line only), but at least it doesn't crash, it can quote, and I can use HTML and UBB code, though I'd like to see that complete list of smilies code which was on the old forum (since the code is always the same anyway).

Firefox has minor display problems with the site as well, like font sizes look smaller, the list of the preview of the album invades the cover image and images have no distance from text, but they're minor problems indeed...
