I was bored by Regret the first time I heard it.

Kuala, which is the better song from The Republican?

Regret by an absolute mile at the moment. It 'kicks' whereas WFTSC is just 'nice'. And there's no way I can compare something I first heard 12 years ago with something I didn't hear till 6 weeks ago.

Regret is pleasant, WFTSC is beautiful.

Regret never quite did it for me (always sounded like the guitar didn't fit the rest)

I know I'm in a minority here, but I like Rock the Shack, so i'm used to this

"Waiting for the sirens' call" by a half-length. "Regret" is a semi-classic, but it never really rises above pleasant. Plus, there's the unfortunate, dated production (those drums! Yikes). Whereas "Waiting for the sirens' call" just gets better with every listen.

I find the drumming on Regret (machine and human combination) one of the NO's crowning glories.

It certainly splits the opinions 50/50.

i went with regret just barely....even if i've heard it to death. regret is catchier, but WFTSC is more beautiful.

but WFTSC may well surpass it in the long run....i can't get enough of it at the moment, so only time will tell which one survives the final test.

The drum sounds on "Regret" are kinda terrible. The snare sound in particular. Very early-90s, very hollow, very processed sounding.

But you have to admit that it's a classic sounding NO drumbeat. Steve has copied and modified the Transmission drumbeat all the way down through the years.

Oh, the drumming (and programming) itself is fine. In fact, it's so perfectly integrated woith the rest of the song it barely gets a notice (not a dis, by the way).

I totally agree with you on the first 3 songs you mentioned... Still, I like Regret better than WFTSC. There are much better songs on the new album. Regret always sounds so fresh to me - after all these years. I don't think I'll say that of WFTSC in - let's say - 10 years.

P.S.: This is no post in favour of Republic though. The new album is better by far...

WFTSC is a good song, but it doesn't carry Regret's jock yet. I'd put WFTSC as the second best song on Republic, though.

WFTSC is a great song...Should have been the first single. The "All the stars and all the worlds" part where the classic NO choral chord thing comes in, is seminal.

Although: "Got to take the midnight train...First to Paris then to Spain" Is excellently dodgy in the extreme.

Can't get enough of that Salt City/Eastwick-Hollway sound...time to pay a proper tribute!

Regret sends shivers down my spine with every listen, whether I'm walking the dog or sitting on the bog. The title track needs a bit of time to ferment in order to reveal its beauty.

Regret's guitar riff sticks in your head for years.  Literally.

Regret - it is a perfect pop single.

Tough call. If forced to choose, I'd have to say WFTSC. A few reasons: the interplay between the different instruments, the perfectly realized wistful vocals by Bernard, and the guitar outro is simply beautiful.

I don't see why WFTSC is so popular. I'm really not to keen on it. I know Bernard has said it's going to be the classic NO track on the album which will be remembered in years to come, but I just don't see it, I don't know... But it just seems quite pretentious and too light, and compared to Regret WFTSC doesn't have substance. Infact I always skip the title track on the album. For me personally, the best tracks on 'Call are Hey Now and Krafty.

No way REGRET is better than WFTSC!!!
