I was contacted yesterday by ITV Teletext, you must know what it is more than I do, but they asked me to answer a few questions for an article that they are doing.
If anybody catches it, let me know!
Questions were:
1 - Do you think their new material is as good as ever?
2 - What is your favourite New Order track and why?
3 - Do you think their music has stood the test of time?
4 - Many bands sight New Order as an influence, why is that?
5 - Are you surprised that the band are still putting out new material?
6 - Would you like to see New Order collaborate with a younger band, if so who and why?
My answers were:
With this new album, you fit at home right from the start. Waiting For The Sirens' Call is like a "best of" of many New Order songs released through the years, so you have to like it, but you also find that the band played it safe this time instead of trying to be innovative.
On this album, the standout track is the title track, although it seems that every New Order fan as its own opinion on that matter, but usually it's a close call between Turn and Waiting For The Sirens' Call. Overall, my own personal favourite song is Run from their best album Technique, simply because of the melody and bass line of the song, the instrumental ending is so catchy.
I don't know many bands like that, but if you listen to early New Order, it still sounds fresh. I mean, anything on Power, Corruption and Lies could be released today, it still sounds fresh.
Probably because even in their 50's now, they still do music like in their 20s, the rage is gone, but it's still beautifully crafted. New Order managed to become popular twice and survived the death of their leading singer, not many bands can claim this, isn't it?
Every new album since 1993 is a blessing, we enjoy each album and each concert as if it was their last. They even blessed us this time, it seems that for the first time ever, they will release 2 albums in 2 years.
Most New Order fans have mixed feelings about this. Usually they agree for collaborations, but not on a New Order album. For instance, they didn't like having guests on Get Ready, but it was ok to give a hand to Gwen Stefani. I guess the usual New Order fan is conservative. However, everybody enjoyed both their collaboration with the Chemical Brothers (Out of Control and Here To Stay), and everybody would enjoy a full album produced by the Chemical Brothers. A collaboration with Doves would also please everybody.
