H&S actually had some heart and soul put into its creation, not to mention more than a dash of substance.

heart and soul gave us things that we haven't heard before, like the demos of ceremony and IALP....whereas retro gave us multiple versions of things we've heard a thousand times before (fine time, anyone?).

I don't know who proof read the ETRO Box set, but it is full or gramatical errors

"Retro" was an absolute wasted opportunity. Shame, 'cause there were so many possibilities. Points for trying to do something a little more thoughtful than the standard chronological tracklisting, though.

"Heart and Soul," on the other hand, is pretty much perfect. It has everything!

Without a doubt Heart & Soul.

bit unfair comparing the two.

jd only had 2 albums (ignoring live & compilations) so they had to find extra stuff to make a 4 disc compilation, far easier than for new order who had released loads more material.

the bonus disc was also a big fillip for the collector. sure we'd all have diffrent ideas about what we'd want on retro, but that just shows you how impossible it would be to do a 4 cd box set for new order.

I have to disagree. Box sets are for collectors, and MUST have unreleased and rare recordings. Heart & Soul is class, Retro is absolute crap (except by the booklet, perhaps). It´s just that simple.

Heart and Soul.  Joy Division created the greatest music ever recorded.

I went for Retro (i'm the only one so far[:$]   )

For me, anything they release is for listening - not for collecting, and I prefer NO to JD.

I really enjoy Heart & Soul - it has everything, so whats not to enjoy.

But Retro has, for me, more better songs - that I listen to far more often.  Its not everything, it dosent have much exclusive/rarities but each disc captures a different mood (different sides to NO?) & they all get a listen frequently - depending on the humour i'm in.[8o|][+o(][<:o)]

I prefered Heart and Soul for the many reasons people already stated. There were only a few tracks on Retro w/ the bonus disc I was interested in. I was more excited about purchasing "In Session" then I was with Retro.
